Tom Heardman netted the only goal of the game as Newcastle United Under-18s picked up a 1-0 win against local rivals Sunderland on Saturday morning.

Fielding a youthful side without regulars like Rolando Aarons, Jonathyn Quinn and Adam Armstrong, United produced an impressive performance on Wearside.

The Magpies were worthy winners against the Black Cats with Heardman hitting the post early on while also Callum Roberts spurned a good opportunity, opting to shoot rather then square the ball to Olivier Kemen as Newcastle dominated but struggled to break down the resilient home side.

United's goal finally arrived just before the hour, however, as Heardman side-footed home at the back post after a great run down the left wing from Roberts.

Academy coach Dave Watson praised the victory, which secured it back-to-back league wins against Sunderland this season.

"We created the better chances and could have won by two or three goals," said Watson "It was a great team performance.

"It will do the lads' confidence the world of good, this win. We had a young side with seven first years and they deserved the victory."

The win was United's second successive victory of 2014 and it will give the Magpies psychological advantage ahead of their FA Youth Cup meeting with the Black Cats later this month.

Newcastle welcome Sunderland to St. James' Park on Monday, January 20th as they bid to reach the fifth round of the competition.
