Newcastle United kicked off 2014 with a convincing home win against Wolves in the Barclays Under-18 Premier League on Saturday.
Following a goalless first half, the Magpies struck three times after the restart with Jonathyn Quinn, Adam Armstrong and Tom Heardman all on target.
United headed into the game without a victory on Tyneside since August but Academy coach Dave Watson was left delighted with the start to the New Year.
"It was a good performance from the lads," he said.
"It was their first game back following their Christmas break and they did really well to pick up a convincing victory.
"I'm pleased they are up and running now for the second half of the year and the 3-0 win will give the team plenty of confidence.
"We did well in the second half of last season and hopefully we can repeat that success again this time.
"We've made some mistakes along the way this year but we are a lot more experienced now and hopefully that will begin to show."
England under-17 international Armstrong broke the deadlock when he cut in from the left and hit a right-footed shot into the far corner.
The striker was then denied a second after a good save from the Wolves goalkeeper but forward Quinn reacted quickest to tuck home the rebound.
With 15 minutes remaining, Quinn and Armstrong made way for Callum Roberts and Heardman and the substitutes combined well for number three, to put the result beyond any doubt.
It came with time running out as Roberts crossed from the right and powerful front man Heardman completed the scoring with a header.
The victory ensured United's under-18s kicked of the calendar year in style and was the perfect preparation for their league clash with Sunderland this weekend.
Watson's men travel to Wearside on Saturday, before entertaining the Black Cats on Monday, 20th January, in the FA Youth Cup.
"They are all important games but Sunderland is always a little bit special, " said Watson.
"We are looking forward to both the games and hopefully continuing our good start to the year."
