Newcastle United Under-18s 1 (Roberts)
West Bromwich Albion Under-18s 2 (Jones, Nabi)

The visitors arrived on Tyneside without a win from their opening four games and without a goal in their last three matches.

Callam Jones took just eight minutes to end Albion's goal drought, however, and despite pressure from United his strike separated the two sides at the break.

Dave Watson's young side levelled through Callum Roberts' effort 15 minutes from time but Newcastle were undone again through Samir Nabi ten minutes later.

The Baggies striker should have stretched the lead even further deep into injury time but blazed his spot-kick over the bar after Jonathan Mitchell had brought down Matthew Buchanan.

United began brightly with Roberts cutting in from the right wing and firing wide across goal after just three minutes.

The lively winger then collected Rolando Aarons' left-wing cross five minutes later but his powerful effort was parried wide by Alex Palmer.

It was West Brom who took the lead moments later, however, as Jones collected Ryan Pace's through ball before bundling the opener past the oncoming Mitchell.

Newcastle responded well with Roberts and Adam Armstrong both firing efforts over at the other end but neither side were able to add to the score sheet before the break.

Leading 1-0 at half-time, Albion were under pressure early in the second-half as Aarons collected Tom Heardman's flick-on but could only fire wide across goal.

Captain Ryan McKinnon, meanwhile, kept United in the game with a superb block after Nabi had rounded Newcastle shot-stopper Mitchell.

Jonathyn Quinn fired over from the edge of the box for the home side before Albion spurned further chances from Tavhon Campbell and Jonathan Leko in an end-to-end second-half.

A deserved equaliser arrived in the 75th minute after good work down the right-wing from Quinn. His pull-back found Aarons who laid the ball to Roberts on the edge of the box and the winger's powerful first time strike left Palmer with no chance in the West Brom goal.

United could have snatched victory eight minutes from time as Heardman's flick fell to Kyle Cameron but the full-back's shot across goal came back off the far post.

The miss was punished by the Baggies as Andre Wright supplied Nabi minutes later and he fired past Mitchell from 20 yards out in the 85th minute.

Pushing for a second equaliser, United were exposed at the back and full-back Buchanan found himself behind Newcastle back four and one-on-one with Mitchell.

The goalkeeper clipped the defender and the referee was quick to point to the spot but goalscorer Nabi fired his penalty over the bar, preventing West Brom from adding an undeserved third.
