Newcastle United under-18s' search for their first away win of the season continues after they fell to a narrow defeat in Berkshire.

United, who have won just one of their first five games this year, trailed 1-0 at the break after the home side capitalis/'ed on a fumble from Freddie Woodman before sub Tom Heardman levelled.

The striker headed powerfully home from Greg Olley's cross but the young Magpies were punished as Reading hit the winner with 15 minutes remaining.

Despite the result, however, Academy coach Dave Watson continued to find the positives from his Newcastle youngsters' performance

"It was a good game all round," said Watson "The kids did well and put in a good performance, and we were unlucky.

"They showed great character to get back into the game and when we equalised we were looking to win.

"Reading went down the other end and grabbed the winner, however, but we still had positives we can take from the game.

"Tom scored a cracking header and our back five was made up entirely of first year players and I though they did well."

The United teenagers are back in action next weekend, when they welcome West Brom to the North East.
