Newcastle United Under-18s 2 (Kerridge, Hall)
Sheffied United Under-18s 0
In their final pre-season friendly of the summer, Dave Watson's juniors beat Sheffield United 2-0 at Little Benton thanks to first half goals from Joe Kerridge and Andy Hall.
But the Magpies were grateful to goalkeeper Freddie Woodman, who put in a superb performance ahead of joining up with the England under-17 team later this month.
Kerridge - who scored twice at the Milk Cup in Northern Ireland - opened the scoring after just four minutes when he took advantage of a defensive slip before slotting home.
And then Hall raced through on goal shortly before the half-hour mark to double Newcastle's advantage.
However, the visitors rallied and only a string of saves from Woodman either side the break blunted the Blades attack.
Newcastle finished the stronger of the two sides, though, despite being without several players due to the under-21s' opening league game of the campaign away to Reading.
Adam Armstrong, Macauley Booth, Alex Gilliead, Tom Heardman, Jamie Sterry, Jonathyn Quinn and Macaulay Gillesphey were all involved in the evening's trip to the Madejski Stadium.
The under-18s kick off their season away to Aston Villa on Saturday (kick-off 11am).
