Gateshead Under-18s 3 (Gurr, Briggs, Carson)

Dave Watson's under-18s began their pre-season campaign with a 6-3 win over Gateshead's Academy side at Little Benton, with England under-16 starlet Adam Armstrong scoring twice.

But Turkish youth international Daniel Barlaser was the real star of the show as he laid on four goals for the Magpies youngsters, who will compete in the Milk Cup in Northern Ireland next week.

Armstrong gave United an early lead when he rifled home from Barlaser's low centre, then Joe Kerridge scored with a bullet header from another fantastic delivery from the winger before defender Kyle Cameron nodded home a third as Barlaser swung over a free-kick.

Jack Gurr pulled one back shortly before half-time but Armstrong made it 4-1 with a good finish from Ben Drennan's pass and substitute Lewis Suddick notched a fifth, Drennan again the provider.

Former Newcastle youngster Dean Briggs crashed home a free-kick as Gateshead refused to lie down but Andy Hall - who was withdrawn at the break but then returned to the field midway through the second half - scored the sixth after being slipped in by Barlaser.

In the final minute, David Carson scored a third for the visitors but it was a comfortable victory for the Magpies, who will be hoping to go one better than last year when they were beaten by Desportivo Brazil in the Milk Cup final.
