Dave Watson praised his side's response to last weekend's 4-1 defeat at Blackburn after goals from Callum Roberts and Greg Olley gave Newcastle a win in snowy conditions at Aston Villa.

The Magpies - who beat Villa 4-3 at Little Benton earlier in the month - surged into a 2-0 lead with Roberts putting them ahead as he got on the end of a cross from in-form Rolando Aarons.

Midfielder Olley doubled the advantage when he shot past former United keeper Aidan Grant from the edge of the area before the hosts pulled one back.

"It was a good team performance," said Under-18s Coach Watson. "We played lots of good football and we had a better attitude than we did in the Blackburn game. It was a total contrast.

"The attitude was great and I was pleased with the reaction. Previous to the Blackburn game, the kids had done well as far as working hard goes but we had a little bit of a setback at Blackburn.

"But we put it right today, which was good."
