Blyth Spartans 2

A young Magpies Academy side came from behind twice to eventually overcome Evostick Premier League outfit Blyth Spartans in an end-to-end affair at Little Benton.

Dave Watson's team was made up almost entirely of first year scholars, with only Lee Desmond, Steven Logan, Esteban Cardona Lopez and Jonathan Mitchell from the second year age group, and the inexperience told as they fell behind to an early goal.

With just five minutes gone of the 75-minute affair, Ash Davies put Spartans in front but Jonathyn Quinn equalised with a header from Cardona Lopez's corner.

But that lead lasted just a few seconds as, from a set-piece of their own, Blyth, managed by former Newcastle player Tommy Cassidy, went ahead again - Jordan Mellish getting the final touch.

The game was turned on its lead late on, though, as two substitutes found the target. Daniel Barlaser got a second equaliser for the Magpies as he was in the right place at the right time, and then Greg Olley got the winner.

"It was a really good performance from our kids," said Under-18s Coach Watson. "They coped well because Blyth were physically stronger and more experienced, but we played very well in the game."
