Newcastle United Under-18s 1 (Taylor)
A Dan Taylor goal and a Jonathan Mitchell penalty save were not enough for Newcastle United's youngsters as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at Carrington.
Table-topping Newcastle made the trip to Manchester looking to extend their six point lead at the top of the Premier Academy League Group D table.
But goals from Ben Pearson and Jack Rudge proved too much for United's depleted side, who suffered their second defeat from their last three outings away from home.
It was the young Magpies who almost took an early lead through striker Taylor, who smashed the crossbar with a neat volley.
Dave Watson's side were made to rue the miss, however, when winger Gyliano van Velzen pulled back for Ben Pearson to open the scoring.
Taylor made no mistake with his second chance, though, heading home Ben Sayer's free kick to level in the 35th minute.
The home side, without a win in their last nine league games, retook the lead soon after, with Jack Rudge finishing past keeper Mitchell.
Steven Logan could have levelled the score just before the break for United but his volley was comfortably saved.
Newcastle spurned further chances to level after the break through goalscorer Taylor, Alex Kitchen and Brandon Miele.
And with United pushing for an equaliser the Red Devils caught Watson's side on the break - with Mitchell bringing down Sam Byrne in the box.
Mitchell was equal to Joe Rothwell's spot-kick, however, saving well to his right but his side could not take advantage and fell to the disappointing defeat.
