Newcastle United took another huge step towards being crowned Premier Academy League Group D champions after they came from behind to beat fourth-placed Derby at the Oakwood Academy.

Dave Watson's side are now five points clear of Leeds with a game in hand after Ryan McGorrigan and Ben Sayer struck against the Rams on Wednesday afternoon.

Matt Regan gave the hosts the lead after ten minutes, heading past former Derby keeper Alex Baird after ten minutes, but it didn't take long for McGorrigan to equalise as he guided home a cross from Marcus Maddison at the near post.

And just after the 50 minute mark, Sayer struck with a side-footed finish into the bottom corner from the edge of the area as Maddison and JJ Hooper combined to set him up.

Maddison and Hooper were both on duty for the Reserves on Tuesday night, while Brandon Miele, Dan Taylor and Steven Logan also figured less than 24 hours after playing for the second-string.

"Some of the lads who played 45 minutes for the Reserves were involved but we made sure there wasn't too much of a strain on them," explained Watson, who replaced Logan with Jamie Smith at half-time and substituted Hooper for Taylor on the hour mark.

"We did well," added the proud coach. "We went a goal down but came back to win, and it was a good team performance. We played really well.

"Derby are up there in the league, so they were a team that we needed to beat - and the march carries on."
