Newcastle United Under-18s 2 (Campbell pen 83, Hooper 98)

Queens Park Rangers Under-18s 1 (Brown 24)

Dave Watson's under-18s are into the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup after an extra-time win over Queens Park Rangers.

United went behind to Ben Brown's first-half strike with the defender forcing home Bradley Simmonds' floated free-kick, and it looked as though the Magpies would be left frustrated by the brilliance of R's goalkeeper Gareth Deane.

The Northern Irish keeper was in inspired form, making save after save as Newcastle could not find a way through - but he was finally beaten with seven minutes left after Marcus Maddison was adjudged to have been brought down by Jordan Walker and Adam Campbell made no mistake from the spot.

From that moment on, it looked like there would only be one winner and JJ Hooper headed home Will Turton's cross in extra time.

Rangers could have snatched a leveller late on, which would have led to a penalty shoot-out, but Newcastle deserved their victory and will now face Blackburn in the last eight.

EXTRA TIME UPDATES

120+2mins - It's all over, and Newcastle are through to the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup. They looked to be heading out, despite creating countless chances, after Ben Brown's goal but Adam Campbell's penalty and JJ Hooper's extra-time header have put Dave Watson's side through to face Blackburn Rovers at the Sports Direct Arena in the last eight.

120mins - There will be two minutes of added time at the end of extra time. Andrade goes down under a tackle in the box from Turton, but United survive the vocal appeals for a penalty from the Rangers players.

119mins - Almost a last-minute leveller for the visitors as Simmonds floats in a free-kick and captain Sendles-White takes the ball down and shoots, only for his effort to take a crucial touch off a Newcastle defender.

114mins - Simmonds is booked for the R's after a late lunge on Marcus Maddison, who was getting up a head of steam as United tried to counter-attack.

111mins - United's third and final change of the night: Lee Toland is on for Michael Hoganson, who has ran himself into the ground.

108mins - The visitors are pressing hard now, having spent most of the game on the backfoot, and Simmonds made good progress down the centre of the field before ignoring options in front of him and shooting straight at Baird.

104mins - A great flick-on by Monthe sees Andrade race onto the ball and shoot across goal with what will be the final chance of the first period of extra time.

103mins - Callum Webb - who had just had a shot comfortably dealt with by Baird - is replaced by Oluwatobi Adekunle for QPR's final change of the night.

100mins - Simmonds produces a clever turn and shoots from 20 yards for the visitors, who now need a goal having led for so long, but Streete throws himself in the way and the ball loops into the arms of a grateful Baird.

98mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (2-1): Two substitutes combine for Newcastle to turn the game on its head. United were losing when Will Turton and JJ Hooper entered the fray, but after Turton's superb cross from the right, Hooper meets it with a glancing header at the near post and now the Magpies lead in extra time. Both players have been bright since coming on, and what a difference they have now made.

96mins - Sayer shoots and the ball must have taken a deflection as it completely wrongfooted Deane, but the Rangers keeper manages to throw out a hand to keep it out even though he was going the wrong way. What a game he's having - and even when Maddison beats him moments later, the ball flashes just wide much to the keeper's relief.

94mins - At the other end, big Monthe shoots from the left-hand angle of the penalty area but Baird has his near post covered and saves comfortably.

93mins - A strike from Maddison is matched by a fine save from Deane, who flies to his left to get a hand to it, and although Hooper races in for the rebound an R's defender hacks the ball clear.

SECOND HALF UPDATES

90+5mins - Referee Harrington's whistle blows, and the tie will go to extra time - and, if required, penalties.

90+3mins - Maddison hits a shot straight at Deane after Hooper's shot on the turn was blocked, then Campbell shoots over from the left-hand side of the penalty area, and it seems that extra-time will be needed here.

90+1mins - The man mountain that is Monthe almost wins it for the R's as he rises to meet Bradley Simmonds' set-piece but heads straight at Baird - he would have been flavour of the Monthe if he'd scored that. Then Andrade just fails to connect properly from six yards when a better touch would surely have knocked Newcastle out of the cup.

90mins - Streete breaks into the box and lets fly with a low strike which flashes past the far post - so close to a late winner for United. With that, the fourth official holds up the board to show five minutes of added time.

89mins - Newcastle break swiftly from a QPR corner and Maddison plays in Hooper, but the substitute's shot from inside the box is deflected over by a last-ditch block.

86mins - After Ben Sayer sees a great strike zip narrowly over, QPR bring on David Fitzpatrick for Jordan Gibbons. They had been waiting to make that change before Newcastle scored as they looked to see the game out, but they have now decided to make it anyway.

82mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-1): At last, United have the goal they deserve - but for a team which has been so unfortunate in front of goal tonight, there was an element of luck about their equaliser. Marcus Maddison surged down the right-hand side of the box and Jordan Walker slid in with what looked like a great tackle - only for the assistant referee to flag and lead Tony Harrington to award a penalty. Adam Campbell must have been under so much pressure as he waited to take it, but he made no mistake as he sent Deane the wrong way.

79mins - Marcus Maddison takes a free-kick after being fouled on the edge of the area, and curls his shot around the wall - but too close to Deane who makes yet another save, albeit one of his more routine stops of the evening.

77mins - Streete is pushing upfield now at every opportunity and Hoganson slides the ball in to him, but the defender scuffs his shot wide. Surely one of these chances will go in for Newcastle?

75mins - Lovely football leads to Miele striking from 25 yards out but it's just too high and drops over the crossbar as the hosts continue to search desperately for the equaliser they need to force extra-time.

73mins - Yet another great chance goes begging for Newcastle. After Campbell had a shot blocked, the ball cannoned out to Ben Sayer whose ball was met by Remie Streete, eight yards out. The skipper's header was on target, but once again saved by Deane.

72mins - Will Turton is on for Steven Logan and will slot straight in at right-back for United.

71mins - Brandon Miele lines up a shot from 20 yards but it never looked likely to beat Deane in the form he has shown, and the keeper got down to it to hold.

69mins - Brundo Andrade - who has played twice for Rangers' first-team - tries his luck from 25 yards but Baird watches the shot well to get his body behind it.

65mins - The visitors make a change of their own with Emmanuel Monthe - who is an absolute giant - replacing Conor Hubble.

63mins - JJ Hooper is on for Dennis Knight, which will see the big striker partner Adam Campbell up-front in what his first appearance since undergoing a hernia operation in December.

61mins - It's all Newcastle here and after a penalty appeal is turned down after Campbell's strike seemed to be blocked with a hand, Marcus Maddison hits a swerving shot which is somehow tipped over by the superb Deane, who is having a fantastic evening. And from the resulting corner, which is half-cleared as far as Miele, Maddison heads over the bar.

60mins - A superb double save from Deane keeps Rangers level. Campbell and Maddison exchange passes and Campbell hits one from 16 yards which Deane gets down to well to parry, but the ball runs straight to Maddison inside the area - only for Deane to make an even better stop.

58mins - Tonight's attendance is 1,196, which is exactly 60 more supporters than were at the third round tie against Darlington, and on what is a cold and drizzly evening that represents a very decent crowd.

56mins - Miele finds space outside the box and tees up Campbell, but the young striker doesn't get sufficient power behind his shot to beat Deane, who watches it all the way.

54mins - Remie Streete is the latest player booked in what has been a very competitive start to the second half, for a rash tackle on Jordan Gibbons which leaves the striker limping.

50mins - And another yellow card - this time to R's captain Jamie Sendles-White for a late, late tackle on Marcus Maddison. It's two apiece in terms of bookings but Rangers still lead where it counts - although Knight's free-kick is not too far away.

48mins - Michael Hoganson becomes the second Newcastle player and the third man overall to be shown a yellow card for a foul on the half-way line.

46mins - QPR have got the second half underway, with no changes for either team.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

45+2mins - It's half-time and QPR lead through Ben Brown's goal, but Newcastle really should be at least level and are very much in this tie still. Will Dave Watson be tempted to introduce returning striker JJ Hooper in the second half to give United more cutting edge up front? They're creating enough chances but they haven't found a breakthrough yet on a chilly night on Tyneside.

45mins - There will be two minutes of added time at the end of the first half.

43mins - By his own high standards, Campbell has been quiet tonight but in a moment of magic, he almost creates an equaliser. He picked up the ball inside his own half before accelerating forwards and slipping in an inch-perfect ball for Hoganson, who should score but is denied by a fine, sprawling stop from Deane. United keep play alive however, and Hoganson picks up the ball out on the right before crossing for Knight, whose header clips the top of the bar on its way over.

38mins - Riley, who has already been booked himself, dispossesses Jake Downes near the byline and sprints towards the box, only to be cynically pulled back by the R's right-back, who is shown the yellow card. Brandon Miele's free-kick is half-cleared but a combination of Riley and Adam Campbell work the ball back to the Irishman, who sends a curling strike agonisingly wide with Deane beaten.

34mins - A fantastic free-kick from 25 yards by Knight comes within inches of levelling the scores. His effort looks in all the way but bounces back off the inside of the post and rolls along the line, where Adam Campbell is sliding in but just can't force it home. Moments later, Knight does get the ball in the net, prodding past Gareth Deane after the keeper had dropped a ball in from the left under pressure from Streete, but referee Harrington spots an infringement and so Knight is frustrated - for now.

29mins - Marcus Maddison, a scorer in the third round win over Darlington, looks lively when Newcastle can get the ball to him out on the right, and after wriggling past two challenges and cutting into the box, the Durham-born youngster curls a shot just wide.

24mins - QPR GOAL (0-1): Louis Storey was somewhat harshly penalised for a foul on the United left and from the resulting free-kick, taken by Bradley Simmonds, is missed by goalkeeper Alex Baird and forced home at the far post by R's defender Ben Brown. The goal has came against the run of play but for the first time in this season's FA Youth Cup, Newcastle will have to come from behind if they're to stay in the competition.

18mins - After a bright start, the game has died off a little with the visitors keeping their shape well and proving hard to break down for the Magpies, who are having all of the possession but not managing to covert it into chances in the last few minutes.

10mins - Michael Riley goes into referee Tony Harrington's notebook for a trip on Jordan Gibbons, who had turned him just inside the Newcastle half and was in full flight heading towards goal.

7mins - Two great opportunities for the hosts as first, Marcus Maddison jinks in and sees his shot blocked - possibly by the hand of a QPR player - before the ball runs to Adam Campbell eight yards out. The England under-17 ace skips past one man and shoots, but his effort is deflected over and United must wonder how they're not ahead yet.

2mins - Dennis Knight, scorer of a wonderful goal in the last round, is almost on target again as he jinks into the box and lets fly with a shot which looked destined for the back of the net until Ben Brown threw his body in the way of the ball.

1min - It's a misty night here on Tyneside, but the fog has for the most part lifted underneath the floodlights at the Sports Direct Arena. Newcastle are in their home kit with the R's in red and white quarters. The Magpies have taken kick-off through Ben Sayer and Brandon Miele and we're underway.
