MATCH REPORT

NEWCASTLE United were dumped out of the FA Cup in emphatic fashion by Championship leaders Birmingham City.

The Blues ran out 5-1 winners in the Third Round replay to make it a forgetable night for the Toon Army, with defender Steven Taylor shown a straight red card for a second-half challenge on DJ Campbell when the striker was through on goal.

Steve Bruce's side took a 5th minute lead through Gary McSheffrey and doubled their advantage before the break when Nobby Solano could only poke a Cameron Jerome cross past Shay Given when sliding to clear.

James Milner hit a 25-yard scorcher ten minutes into the second period to half the deficit but within seconds Steven Taylor had been dismissed for bringing down Campbell as he looked to race clear on goal.

And that proved a double disaster when Bruno N'Gotty finished smartly after picking up the rebound from the resulting free-kick to restore Birmingham's two-goal advantage.

Two more late strikes from Sebastian Larsson (83) and Campbell (90) componded United's misery and sent the Blues through to face a Fourth Round tie at home to Reading.

SECOND-HALF ACTION

90min - BIRMINGHAM GOAL (1-5) : DJ Campbell finishes past an advancing Shay Given from 20 yards after Blues captain Damien Johnson played him through, the forward having timed his run to perfection.

88min - McSheffrey is replaced by Neil Kilkenny.

88min - Birmingham don't appear finished yet and Huntington does well to make a sliding clearance from a low McSheffrey delivery.

86min - Neil Danns replaces Sebastian Larsson

83min - BIRMINGHAM GOAL (1-4) : Cameron Jerome finds space on the edge United's area, the forward slips a ball behind Alan O'Brien and Swedish winger Sebastian Larsson latches onto the pass before firing low past Given from 10 yards.

82min - Mehdi Nafti replaces Fabrice Muamba

81min - Play is delayed after Sibierski receives an accidental kick to the face. The Frenchman is replaced by 18-year-old Andy Carroll, making his second substitute appearance for United.

76min - Sibierski does well to hold up play 40 yards from goal and slips a pass to Kieron Dyer. The England international plays a one-two with Obafemi Martins and bursts into City's area but is unable to get a shot away and is crowded out by Blues defenders.

72min - Solano finds space on halfway and tries to thread a pass through for Dyer but again there is too weight on the ball and Taylor collects.

69min - Peter Ramage chops down Campbell 15 yards inside the United half and receives a yellow card.

67min - Gary McSheffrey is causing problems for United and his run creates an opening for Muamba on the edge of the area. The midfielder looks certain to score but Alan O'Brien throws himself in front of the strike and the Magpies clear.

65min - United are still pressing to reduce the deficit and Milner tries to play in Dyer with a clever reverse pass but there's slighlty too much on it and with Dyer bearing down on Maik Taylor the keeper slides to gather.

60min - Newcastle's next attack sees the ball drop at the feet of Martins inside the penalty area but his snapped shot is straight at Maik Taylor

59min - BIRMINGHAM GOAL (1-3) : Sebastian Larsson takes the resulting free-kick and when it hits the wall the ball falls kindly for Bruno N'Gotty to drill it past Shay Given and immediately restore the Blues' two-goal lead.

58min - NEWCASTLE RED CARD : From kick-off DJ Campbell gets away from Steven Taylor and is clean through on goal. Taylor pulls down the striker on the edge of the box and Peter Walton has no hesitation in dismissing the England under-21 international.

57min - Matty Pattison is replaced by Alan O'Brien

56min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-2) : James Milner hits a rising drive from 30 yards which flies beyond Taylor and Newcastle are right back in the game. It's the 21-year-old's second of the season.

56min - Left-winger Pattison is involved again and he latches onto a Dyer throughball but his cross defelcts off N'Gotty and runs through to Taylor.

53min - Pattison volleys down into the turf from Milner's cross and Maik Taylor collects comfortably.

52min - Martins tries to engineer a United break but kicks fresh air inside the Blues box when his standing leg pokes the ball with the Nigerian poised to strike.

47min - Steven Taylor drives United forward but when he overruns the ball catches Sadler with a high challenge and is shown a yellow card by Peter Walton.

46min - City are quickly on the charge and McSheffrey delivers a whipped cross after beating Solano but Steven Taylor manages to clear from the head of Jerome.

United get the second-half underway with no changes for either side.

FIRST-HALF ACTION

45min - BIRMINGHAM GOAL (0-2) : Cameron Jerome spins Peter Ramage on the right-wing and bursts into United's box. The striker plays a dangerous ball across the face of goal and Nobby Solano slides to get there before DJ Campbell but pokes the ball beyond Shay Given to give Steve Bruce's men a two-goal lead.

43min - McSheffrey breaks for City with pace and a clever pass in behind Huntington finds Larsson who crosses first time with Ramage heading behind inside the six-yard box. Given comfortably gathers the flag-kick.

40min - Sadler whips over a left-wing free-kick which is headed clear by Ramage. The ball drops to McSheffrey in space on United's edge and his low, drilled effort rebounds high off Huntington and is prevented from going behind for a corner by Given.

38min - Sibierski's low half-volley from Solano's delivery is gathered by Maik Taylor. United are straight back on the attack from the goalie's upfield kick and Martins' effort defelcts off Martin Taylor for a corner. Milner's centre is plucked from the air by Maik Taylor.

37min - Steven Taylor is caught in possession trying to start a United attack but Jerome's through ball lacks direction and Solano tidies up.

36min - James Milner cuts in from the right but slices a right-footed effort well wide from outside the area.

35min - Given cleans up after a tidy City moves sees Muamba play a one-two with Jerome but the striker's return has too much on it for the on loan Arsenal midfielder.

29min - Larsson plays in Campbell and he is clean through on Given, the striker fluffs his shot and a sliding Peter Ramage makes an interception. Campbell retrieves the loose ball and squares it for strike partner Cameron Jermome who sees his goalbound effort saved by Given before Huntington completes the clearance.

28min - Milner is fouled by Sadler and the winger's free-kick is cleared. It's end to end stuff and the Blues break with McSheffrey, the goalscorer's cross eluding everyone when Jerome should have doubled their advantage.

27min - Martins and Pattison exchange passes and the NIgerian tries to work an angle from 20 yards but sees his drive deflected off Martin Taylor and bounce harmlessly through to Maik Taylor.

25min - The Magpies are enjoying more possession and Dyer has a shot charged down by Blues skipper Damien Johnson on the edge of the area.

23min - A Sadler slip forces Martin Taylor to hack clear inside the City penalty area. From the throw-in Solano whips over a cross and Sibierski heads wide at the back post.

22min - United break and Martins controls in the box from a Sibierski centre but he is unable to get a shot away and the ball is cleared.

21min - City win a free-kick 25 yards from goal when Steven Taylor catches Muamba with a high challenge. Shay Given is forced to make a fine left-handed save and palm behind with McSheffrey's curling effort heading for the top corner. Milner clears the danger from the resulting corner.

18min - Dyer beats Johnson on halfway and carries United forward before finding Pattison. The South African blazes over however from just inside City's box.

14min - Dyer is flagged offside but it's touch and go after the midfielder was played in by Sibierski. His eventual effort went just wide of Taylor's goal.

10min - Sibierski finds Pattison on United's left but when he cuts inside his low, right-footed effort lacks power and is easily gathered by Maik Taylor.

9min - City are pushing for another and only a timely intervetion by Solano from Jerome's cross prevents McSheffrey bagging his second.

6min - There's further uncertainty in United's backline when Sadler whips over a ball from the left which flashes across goal and Jerome just fails to reach. Had he got a connection it would surely have been 2-0 to the Blues.

5min - BIRMINGHAM GOAL (0-1): Jermoe's low cross is cleared only as far as Larsson by Ramage. The Swede beats Huntington before delivering a dangerous cross which Ramage flicks to McSheffrey. The winger composes himself before cutting inside and firing past Given from eight yards.

3min - Newcastle have the game's first attack when a neat move involving Dyer and Milner ends with Martins' through ball running harmlessly to Maik Taylor in City's goal

Birmingham kick-off attacking the Gallowgate End on a chilly night at St.James' Park.

TEAM NEWS

GLENN Roeder was good to his word and named an unchanged starting line-up from the team which won at Spurs on Sunday.

That meant midfield duo Scott Parker (stomach strain) and Emre (calf) were again given extra time to recover ahead of West Ham's visit to St.James' Park on Saturday.

There was one change among United's substitutes with 16-year-old Kazenga LuaLua replacing James Troisi.

Blues boss Steve Bruce was without Danish international Nicklas Bendtner (ankle) who was injured in the 2-2 draw with United 11 days ago.

While Bruno N'Gotty came in for full-back Stephen Kelly (calf) to make his first start in three months and Cramlington-born Martin Taylor replaced the suspended Radhi Jaidi who was sent off in the tie at St.Andrew's.
