MATCH REPORT

NEWCASTLE kept up their impressive run of form with a 3-2 win over Reading in a thriller at St. James' Park.

Antoine Sibierski nodded the Magpies in front on 23 minutes, but lapses at the back allowed James Harper to turn the game on its head to give the visitors a half time lead.

Obafemi Martins scored from the spot to level matters just before the hour after being fouled in the box, and then Emre scored a screamer to give United the points.

SECOND HALF UPDATES

90+4m Solano did well to head away under pressure from Ki-yeon as Reading piled on the pressure at the end, but United held on to take the points.

90m Four minutes were added on at the end of the 90.

88m Murty needed treatment after being caught by N'Zogbia, and while he was given some attention, Martins made way for Giuseppe Rossi. Murty was able to play no further part, so Andre Bikey came off the bench.

87m Ramage took no chances whne he hooked the ball out withy Ki-Hyeon trying to nip in ahead of Given for a ball over the top.

84m NEWCASTLE GOAL (3-2) Emre robbed Sidwell in midfield, and he advanced forward before curling a delightful shot over Hahnemann and into the net.

83m N'Zogbia almost picked out Martins with a good pass, but Ingimarsson was across quickly to boot the ball to safety.

82m Sibierski charged down a loose ball after Martins beat Sonko down the left, but Reading cleared and when Solano fouled Little he was booked.

81m Reading made a change up front for the last nine minutes, with England under-21 striker Leroy Lita replacing Kevin Doyle.

79m Doyle won a free kick off Taylor in a dangerous position on the inside left. Little floated the ball in, but Given collected on his six yard line.

78m Emre and Butt both needed attention aftre they clashed heads in midfield, and Reading sportingly played the ball back to Given with both of the centre midfielders having to stand on the sidelines before play resumed.

77m A cross from Emre after good work from Babayaro was headed away by Shorey.

73m Reading mounted a quick counter attack after Butt was robbed on the edge of the visiting box, but when they won a corner Newcastle did well to clear. Butt and Sidwell were then spoken to by the referee after an altercation, but no cards were issued.

72m Martins and Sibierski were showing signs of a good link-up, and when they traded passes quickly the Nigerian dragged a shot just wide.

71m The game was swaying from end to end, and after another Little corner, Ingimarsson headed wide of Given's right hand post.

70m N'Zogbia tried to find the net from distance when he burst through from midfield when a pass to his left for Martins may have turned out to be the better option.

68m Little's cross from the right was put out for a flag kick by Solano. Little swung the ball in right footed, but Sidwell's header was off target.

66m Sidwell fired high and wide after Oster's cross was headed out by Ramage after a good attack down the visitors' left flank.

65m Murty was booked for a foul on N'Zogbia. The free kick was played short to Butt, but his ambitious strike from distance was never going to trouble Hahnemann.

64m N'Zogbia sprayed the ball into the path of Martins, and his shot was blocked by Ingimarsson on the edge of the box.

60m Sibierski had the ball in the net again when he skipped around Hahnemann after a pass from Emre to slide the ball into the net, but he was flagged offside when TV replays proved he was clearly on.

58m NEWCASTLE GOAL (2-2) Martins was brought down by Sonko as he chased onto a flick from Sibierski. Referee Styles pointed to the spot, and after Solano and Martins argued for the ball, it was the striker who took it and he found the bottom corner before celebrating with his backflip routine.

56m Babayaro was coming under pressure from sections of the crowd, a nervy header from him almost landed the Magpies in trouble but Taylor hacked the ball away.

53m Sidwell tried to catch Given out from at least 50 yards after Siberiski was robbed, but the ball floated over the top with the goalkeeper back-pedalling.

52m Butt floated a ball over the top for Martins, but he was flagged offside after getting goal side of Sonko.

50m Given stretched to claim a cross from Doyle after a Reading raid down the right.

46m Taylor did well to cut out a cross from Ki-Hyeon as the visitors started the second half with an immediate attack.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

45+1m One minute of time was added on at the end of the first half, and after Milner wasted a good opportunity to cross, the half time whistle brought booing from the home crowd.

45m Newcastle were all at sea at this point, and Taylor did well to head away and deny Doyle a certain goal after Little had time and space to loft the ball into the six yard box. Thankfully for Newcastle, Sidwell headed wide from oster's flag kick.

42m READING GOAL (1-2) A slip by Babayaro let in Little, and when he shot low across goal Given did well to palm it out, but the ball was worked back to Harper and he shot into the bottom corner to stun the Magpies.

40m Emre burst forward and fed Milner, and when he cut inside and shot, Hahnemann got down to save.

38m Taylor was put under pressure by Doyle on the right, and when the cross came in Solano had to clear for a corner. Little's cross after a short routine was met by Ki-Hyeon and Given had to make another save to give another corner away, which was eventually cleared by Solano.

37m READING GOAL (1-1) The visitors equalised when Oster broke down the left, and when he pulled the ball back into the path of James Harper his 20 yard drive clipped off Solano and beat Given.

36m Steve Coppell was forced to make a change with Stephen Hunt being replaced by Glen Little.

35m A good spell of pressure saw Solano whip in a cross from the right which was met by Martins, and when his header crashed back off the bar, Sibierski saw a shot charged down and then Emre was pulled up for going in too strong on Sonko as he tried to pounce on the loose ball.

33m A cross from the right by Murty saw Doyle attempt an acrobatic overhead kick which flashed just wide of Given's right hand post.

29m Milner put Ingimarsson under pressure to win the ball as the Magpies put their visitors on the back foot, but it rolled out for a throw in.

28m Emre played in Sibierski who saw a clever backheel picked up by Martins, but he took a touch and fired over the top.

25m Harper was tripped by Butt as he tried to run through the middle, giving Reading a free kick 30 yards out in a central position.Ki-Hyeon curled the ball over the wall, but his effort dipped over the top of Given's crossbar.

23m NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-0) A mix up between Sonko and Shorey saw the ball bobble out for a Newcastle corner on the right. Emre's first corner was headed away, and when the ball was worked back to Solano on the right his cross was met by Sibierski who headed home his sixth goal and took over from Shola Ameobi at the top of the goalscoring charts.

20m Emre burst through the middle with a strong run from midfield, but when he laid the ball off to Butt and waited for the pass back, Sonko got in to shackle him and clear for the visitors.

19m Sibierski got on the end of a free kick from Emre, but his header was well off target.

18m Sibierski's flick on from a punt downfield from Given sent Martins scampering away, but Ingimarsson was alert enough to guide the ball back to his goalkeeper.

16m Sibierski had the best chance of the game so far when Milner clipped in a measured cross from the right, but his header was straight at Hahnemann.

15m A diagonal ball from Murty was kept in by Hunt on the byeline, but his low cross was cleared by Taylor.

14m Hunt tried to get on the end of a long ball over the top from Sonko, but he was adjudged to have fouled Solano and play resumed with a United goal kick.

11m Reading won another flag kick, this time on the right, but when Oster crossed in Sonko headed wide. There was then a delay in play when a bird landed on the pitch in some distress, and Martins used his pace to catch it and hand it to stewards who took it away!

9m Emre curled in a floating free kick from the right wing, and Martins flicked a header goalwards which Hahnemann had to get down low to save.

8m A foul on Doyle by Emre gave the visitors a free kick on the right hand channel midway inside the United half. Hunt whipped the ball in, but Sibierski headed clear to launch a quick counter attack. Martins fed Milner down the inside right, but the winger fired over the top.

5m Taylor gave away a corner on the Reading left, and the short routine between Oster and Ki-Hyeon was cut out at the near post by Ramage.

2m A pass from Sibierski set N'Zogbia away down the left, but his cross was cut out by Murty. From the next attack, Solano's through ball was just too strong for Martins.

1m Reading, backed by a healthy following of fans, got the game underway attacking the Gallowgate End. An early cross from Murty was headed away by Solano.
