MATCH REPORT

STEVE Harper saved Jordan Stewart's penalty in the sudden-death shootout to book United's place in the last eight of the Carling Cup - their first shootout success in eight competitive attempts.

On a dramatic night at Vicarage Road, Antoine Sibierski got the Magpies off to a dream start with a third minute opener, but Damien Francis equalised, and Danny Shittu headed home in extra time to give the home side the lead.

But Scott Parker led by example when he found the net with just four minutes of extra time remaining, and Solano, Emre, Carr, Duff and N'Zogbia all found the net in the shootout to pace the way for Harper's heroics.

SECOND HALF (EXTRA TIME) UPDATES

120+2m A throw in down by the corner flag was launched in by Doyley and flicked on by Henderson, but Parker cleared his lines and the game went to the lottery of a penalty shootout.

120+1m As the game went into another two minutes of stoppage time, Watford were on the ropes and Lee had to be quick off his line to clear as N'Zogbia tried to put him under pressure.

120m Milner almost sent Duff away, but Doyley blocked, and then another break caused havoc in the home defence but Shittu cleared.

119m Watford won a corner through Henderson. Young curled it in but Ramage cleared and a quick break saw Solano send Parker away again but this time Lee made the save.

117m Milner lofted the ball into the box as the Magpies set about finding another goal before a penalty shootout, but Lee gathered the cross above his head.

116m NEWCASTLE GOAL (2-2) Scott Parker kept the cup dream alive with a deft chip over Lee after a great weighted ball from Solano.

114m Roeder made another change, with N'Zogbia replacing goalscorer Sibierski.

113m Newcastle mounted  auseful attack involving Solano, Duff and Sibierski, but the final ball was lacking and Watford easily swept away the danger.

112m Young headed over the top when Spring curled a teasing cross in from the right hand side.

110m Duff played the ball to Solano, who quickly returned the favour, but the former Chelsea star shot straight at Lee.

107m WATFORD GOAL (2-1) Taylor's barge on Young gave Watford a free kick wide on the right. Young curled the ball in, and Shittu powered in to bullet home a header from six yards to give the hosts the lead for the first time on the night.

106m Taylor swept away a cross from Bouazza as the Hornets pressed from the off.

FIRST HALF (EXTRA TIME) UPDATES

105m Bangura rolled a shot wide of Harper's right hand post, then Watford won a corner in stoppage time but Ramage did well to head away.

103m Emre got in a good block on Francis, and when the Magpies countered, Duff ended up shooting narrowly wide of lee's right hand post. 

102m Bangura saw a powerful drive hit his team-mate Francis, and when the loose ball was lofted back in Harper back-pedalled and gathered on his line. Newcastle broke quickly, and Demerit had to get in ahead of Parker after a pass from Solano to prevent the Magpies skipper going clean through.

100m Bangura fired wide from distance after a throw in was headed out by Ramage.

99m Babayaro did well to head away a cross from Young with Spring racing in at\the back post. Before play resumed, Nobby Solano came on in place of Giuseppe Rossi.

98m Babayaro got a good tackle in to thwart Spring, then at the other end Milner sent in another good cross which drifted across the face of goal.

96m Newcastle were happy to clear their lines through Emre after a long throw in from Doyley caused problems at the back.

95m Lee saved at the feet of Emre after the Turk powered his way through a joint challenge from Shittu and Demerit.

94m Henderson had a free header when Spring crossed from the right, but his effort was easy for Harper.

92m Bouazza's low cross towards the near post was flicked by Young into the side-netting.

91m Harper had to save at the feet of Henderson just seconds after the restart after Taylor missed a through ball from Bouazza.

SECOND HALF UPDATES

90+3m Watford won a corner in the dying seconds when Carr headed over a cross from Demerit. Sibierski neede treatment for a head injury before the flag kick was taken. Young eventually curled the ball in, and Henderson's header bounced wide so the game went into extra time, and possibly penalties.

90+1 Three minutes of time were added on at the end of the 90.

90m Babayaro's heavy challenge on Young wide on the right saw the hosts given the chance to throw bdies forward. The ball fell to Shittu at the back post, and his looping cross back in came off the face of the bar and Babayaro did well to block Francis' shot.

88m Lee had to be quick off his line to pounce on a header back to him from Shittu as Rossi tried to nip in.

87m Milner's ball to Parker saw the skipper send Duff away on the inside left, but his shot was easy for Lee when a pass to a better-placed team-mate would have been the better option.

84m Babayaro threaded a ball inside the left channel to Rossi, but the impressive Francis got across to divert the ball for a flag kick, which came to nothing.

82m Duff was unlucky to see a low shot across goal smash off the post with the goalkeeper beaten and out to safety as extra time loomed ever-closer.

81m Ramage got a great challenge in on Young as he shaped to shoot, and the ball bobbled back off the Watford striker for a goal kick.

80m Sibierski was booked, rather harshly, after a 50-50 tussle with Shittu just inside the Watford half.

78m A low cross from Duff was cleared by Francis, then moments later a low drive from Milner was blocked by the same player for a corner. Milner took the corner, but it drifted over everyone and Watford cleared.

76m Duff was picked out by Babayaro on the left and he skipped past Doyley and crossed, but Lee came out to collect.

75m A foul by Parker on Francis gave the hosts a free kick 30 yards out in a central position. Young floated the free kick in, but Bouazza couldn't keep the ball in and play resumed with a Newcastle goal kick.

73m Watford made a change, with Tamas Priskin replaced by Al Bangura.

72m A low strike from distance from Duff rolled past the post.

70m Newcastle tried to find an immediate response when Parker lofted in a cross from the right, but Lee gathered ahead of Sibierski.

69m WATFORD GOAL (1-1) A push on Henderson by Carr gave Watford a free kick on the inside left channel 25 yards from goal. Young curled the ball in right footed, Demerit flicked it on, and Damien Francis popped up at the far post to poke the ball home.

67m A long throw into the middle from Doyley was cleared by Parker as the hosts tried to press the Magpies on the back foot.

64m A deep free kick from Emre saw Rossi challenge Lee, but the goalkeeper was always going to be favourite and he gathered the ball on the edge of his six-yard box.

63m Taylor did well to block a cross from Bouazza and Carr cleared, and when Watford regained possession through Stewart he was tripped by Milner. Young whipped the ball in and everyone missed it, but harper somehwo tipped the ball away for a corner. The first ball in was half cleared as far as Young, and Ramage did well to clear his ball into the box.

61m Francis' challenge on Emre left the midfielder rolling on the floor, but he was on back on his feet as United were given a free kick, which ultimately came to nothing.

59m Milner tried to loft a ball over the top for Rossi, but Lee got their first to collect.

58m A shot from Parker was deflected wide after a great move that start with a tenacious challenge from Emre on the edge of his own box. The ball was worked out to Duff, and his cross was cleared by Francis as far as the skipper who saw his shot go for a corner. The first corner was cleared for a second flag kick, and this time ramage ended up heading over the top.

55m A strong run from Emre saw the Turk cut in and feed Rossi, but his shot from the edge of the 18-yard box was charged down by Shittu.

53m Parker did well to head clear a dangerous left wing cross from Stewart as Watford tried to find a way back into the game.

50m A cross from Young from the right was nodded away by Taylor, and Duff completed the clearance.

48m Rossi worked the ball to Sibierski who in turn tried to pick out Duff, but he slipped at a crucial time as he tried to get in behind Doyley and the chance went begging.

46m Neither side had made any substitutions as the second period got underway.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

45+1m Newcastle broke and a weak clearance from Lee fell to Duff, and when he advanced and shot from a tight angle, the goalkeeper saved with his legs.Milner picked up a pass from Parker and sent Rossi clear on goal, but Lee saved at his feet as an entertaining half ended with the Magpies a goal to the good. 

44m Babayaro fouled Young to give the home side a free kick in a dangerous position wide on the right about 10 yards from the byeline. Young whipped it in and everyone missed it, only for Spring to hook the ball back in and when Shittu headed goalwards Sibierski cleared for another corner. When the ball came in from the flag kick, Demerit flicked it on and harper scooped it round the post for another flag kick which this time was cleared.

39m A cross from the left by Francis was touched into the path of Spring by Bouazza, but the former Luton man fired over the top.

35m A foul on Milner by Priskin gave United a free kick wide on the right, but Emre's delivery was cleared. Another free kick quickly followed, this time after Priskin fouled Parker, and when the ball was worked out to Milner his superb cross was wasted with nobody in a black and white shirt in a position to add to the lead.

32m Spring saw a 25 yard drive blocked by Ramage, and when Newcastle broke through Duff, Doyley was cautioned for chopping down the winger.

30m Babayaro was well positioned to head clear a long throw in from Doyley, and whne the Watford full back tried to cross back in to the danger area, he saw his effort float out of play for a goal kick.

25m Sibierski flicked on a long ball into the path of Milner, but Stewart was alert enough to nip in and clear the danger. 

23m The game was flowing from end to end, and when Duff and Rossi traded passes, the Irishman saw his angled effort saved by Lee and Watford cleared. Newcastle quickly reworked the ball, and Babayaro saw a low drive from 22 yards blocked by Young after Milner teed him up from the right.

22m Demerit's foul on Sibierski gave the visitors a free kick, but when Emre lofted the ball in Watford cleared quickly and broke downfield where Priskin found himself clear but Ramage got back to block.

21m Carr prodded the ball away for a left wing corner under pressure from Bouazza, but Harper came to punch and Shittu headed wide. 

18m Another Watford free kick, this time on the right edge of the box, was taken short by Bouazza and Young fired straight into the black and white wall before the Magpies cleared their lines through Babayaro.

16m Babayaro's tussle with Priskin saw the Hornets win a free kick wide on the right midway inside the United half, but when Demerit floated the ball in Henderson headed high and wide.

15m Demerit had to hack the ball away when Babayaro's ball was flicked into the box by Rossi. Seconds later Young had to hook the ball away as United kept up the pressure, and when Carr knocked it back in Sibierski raced clear but Lee was quick off his line to make the block.

13m Francis played the ball out to Stewart who picked out Henderson with a good cross, and Babayaro had to slide in to concede a corner. The flag kick was taken short by Bouazza to Young, but he cut in and fired wide.

11m A long throw from Babayaro picked out Milner 35 yards out, and when he fed Sibierski the striker spun past Shittu but fired over from the edge of the box.

10m Milner did well to tease Stewart on the right, and when he crossed in towards the back post Doyley headed out for a corner. Emre arrowed the corner in, but Taylor's header flew wide.

7m Duff drifted out wide then cut inside Stewart with a good run, but his low strike was easy for Lee.

5m A cross from Young saw Henderson head goalwards, and Carr had to turn it away for a corner. Whent he flag kick came in, Henderson headed wide of Harper's left hand upright.

4m It almost opened up for United again when Sibierski picked up a loose ball and advanced forward, but his pass for Rossi was cut out by Stewart.

3m NEWCASTLE GOAL (0-1) A foul on Emre by Matthew Spring gave Newcastle a free kick 45 yards out on the left hand side. Emre floated the ball in, and Sibierski rose highest to head home and give the Magpies a flying start.

1m Sibierski and Rossi got the game underway with United defending the stand housing a large number of travelling supporters.

TEAM NEWS

GLENN Roeder welcomed back Steven Taylor and Peter Ramage at the heart of his back four for Tuesday's Carling Cup fourth round game with Watford at Vicarage Road.

They replaced Craig Moore and Titus Bramble, who didn't travel south, while Antoine Sibierski also returned after missing the defeat by Sheffield United at the weekend.

He came in for Charles N'Zogbia, who dropped to the bench, and partnered Giuseppe Rossi in attack.

The fourth change saw Emre come back into the starting line up at the expense of Nicky Butt, who didn't make the 16.
