NEWCASTLE turned on the style to get back to winning ways in the Premiership with a 2-0 success at West Ham on Sunday.
After a goalless first half, Damien Duff netted his first Magpies goal with a well taken strike on 50 minutes, and Obafemi Martins then broke his duck 15 minutes from time to seal the win for United.
The game was marred for Newcastle however, when Shay Given was stretchered off with what looked like a serious injury near the end after a collision with Marlon Harewood.
SECOND HALF UPDATES
90m+4 Benayoun's effort clipped off Martins for a corner, but Harper collected as the game drew to a close.
90+3m Emre made way for Nicky Butt in Roeder's third and final change of the afternoon.
90+1m Bowyer had a 25 yard drive deflected into the arms of Harper in the first minute of the five added on at the end following the injury to Given.
87m After a lengthy delay, play resumed and Sibierski was flagged offside as the visitors pressed for a third goal.
84m Given and Harewood both needed treatment after colliding, and while Harewood was quickly on his feet it was clear that the Magpies number one was in trouble. Given was eventually stretchered away, with Steve Harper coming off the bench.
83m Parker's heavy challenge on Zamora left the striker in a heap in the centre circle, and having already been booked the skipper may have feared the worst but referee Rob Styles opted for a final warning.
82m Sibierski headed just wide from Milner's cross after some good play from Duff on the right.
80m Zamora picked up the ball with his back to goal on the inside left channel, but Moore was in quickly to tackle him and give a corner away, Etherington swung the corner in and Harewood headed it back across goal, but Ramage dived in to clear.
78m Konchesky was booked after wiping out Milner on the right touchline, but the free kick came to nothing.
77m Parker fouled Mullins on the edge of the box and picked up a yellow card. Bowyer back-heeled the free kick to Konchesky and his shot clipped off Parker for a corner. Ramage again did well to head clear from Etherington's flag kick.
75m NEWCASTLE GOAL (0-2) Emre broke away before playing the ball behind Ferdinand and Gabbidon, and after the defenders dithered Martins raced in to slot the ball into the net for his first goal in the number nine shirt.
74m Sibierski's first touch saw him try his luck from 30 yards, but his effort was just off target. Moments later Moore was booked for a foul on Harewood. Harewood followed him into the book for dissent. Bowyer sprayed the free kick out to Konchesky, and his cross was powerfully headed away by Babayaro.
73m Bowyer was fouled by Emre and didn't appear to react too kindly to the apology from his former team-mate. When Bowyer laid the free kick out to Etherington, his cross was headed wide of Given's right hand post by Harewood. Ameobi was replaced by Antoine Sibierski before Given could take the goal kick.
71m Martins flick to Emre after good work from Parker and Ameobi almost saw the Turk break free, but Gabbidon recovered in time to guide the ball back to Carroll who cleared downfield.
67m West Ham made a double switch, with Yossi Benayoun replacing Mascherano and Hayden Mullins coming on for Mears.
67m Moore headed Etherington's cross from the left away as the Hammers tried to find a way back into the match.
63m Ferdinand's foul on Martins saw United awarded a free kick 40 yards. Emre fired the ball in diagonally, but Ameobi was unable to direct his header on target after rising with Ferdinand.
62m Carr traded passes with Martins before bursting into the box and seeing his effort loop off Gabbidon for a corner on the left. Duff whipped the ball in, but the home side cleared their lines.
60m Moore got the ball stuck under his foot before clearing under pressure from Zamora when Bowyer played the ball across the edge of the box from the right.
58m Milner did well to win a corner off Konchesky on the United right. Emre whipped the ball in and Gabbidon headed the ball straight up into the air before Moore and Ramage both had stabs at it before the goalkeeper eventually gathered possession.
56m A foul on Bowyer by Martins gave West Ham a free kick wide on the right. Etherington curled the ball in, but the impressive Ramage rose above Harewood to clear.
53m Ferdinand headed clear Carr's cross back to the full-back, and when he put the ball back in Carroll gathered.
53m Duff had to hack the ball way from 15 yards after Zamora's low cross deflected into the bath of home skipper Reo-Coker.
52m Konchesky had to race across from the left back berth to clear under pressure from Ameobi after Emre tried to launch another break for the visitors.
50m NEWCASTLE GOAL (0-1) Konchesky's cross was headed away by Ramage under pressure from Bowyer on the edge of the six yard box, and when United broke Martins raced forward from halfway and played it out to Damien Duff on the left, and he drilled the ball low past Carroll to register his first goal for the Magpies.
46m West Ham boss Alan Pardew made a change at the start of the second half, replacing Tevez with Marlon Harewood.
FIRST HALF UPDATES
45+2 Two minutes of time were added on at the end of an entertaining first period, but there were no further chances at either end as the half ended goalless.
45m Mears was booked for a barge on Duff as the Irish winger tried to skip past him on the left touchline. Emre tried to centre from the free kick, but Mascherano headed away from the edge of the box.
43m Martins saw a half volley flash wide after Ferdinand's header from Given's clearance fell to him 30 yards out.
42m Babayaro got the first caution of the game after hauling back Zamora when the striker turned him midway inside the Magpies half. Etherington sprayed the ball out to Bowyer, and his cross was nodded away by Ramage.
40m Babayaro headed the ball out for a corner after Reo-Coker tried to pick out Zamora. Etherington's flag kick to the bak post ended up at the feet of Duff, and he cleared without trouble.
38m Given's throw out to Milner saw the wide man race away before laying the ball off to Martins, and when he threaded a pass through to Ameobi Carroll was quick off his line to scoop the ball up.
37m Etherington's cross was punched away by Given, and when the ball fell to Mascherano he fired wide from 25 yards.
36m Babayaro was well off target with a 25 yard drive after good link-up play from Carr and Martins.
35m Martins robbed Mascherano and fed Ameobi, whose shot clipped off Gabbidon and looped away for a left wing flag kick. Duff arrowed the ball into the crowded box, and Moore headed straight at Carroll. Carroll's long clearance sailed through to Given, and he tried to clear but only found Bowyer on the right touchline. He tried a first time effort from distance with Given off his line, and his spectacular effort was just wide of the target.
33m Reo-Coker's foul on Ameobi saw the Magpies awarded a free kick wide on the right about 35 yards out. Emre swung the ball in, but the ball ended up in the arms of Carroll.
31m Konchesky got away from Milner on the left, and his low cross was flicked on by Zamora but Parker cleared. The ball ended up on the right flank where Tevez tried his luck, but Duff was well positioned to make the block. A looping cross from Mears was gathered by Given to end a brief spell of pressure.
30m Newcastle continued to press, and Duff was next to be caught offside after another ball over the top from Emre, then the Turk scuffed a low shot at Carroll.
29m Martins fed Duff and his corss was cleared as far as Emre 30 yards out, and his half volley was saved low to his right by Carroll.
27m Emre robbed Bowyer and lofted a ball over the top for Martins, but the Nigerian was flagged offside.
23m Ameobi's flick sent Milner away down the right, and Mascherano had to slide in to put the ball out for a corner. Emre swung the ball in towards the near post, and Bowyer had to concede another corner. This time Emre's flag kick fell to Duff on the edge of the box and he fed Carr who looped it into Ameobi. The striker scooped it goalwards and forced Carroll to make a save before stabbing the loose ball wide.
22m Milner cut in between Etherington and Mascherano and drilled in a low angled drive, but his shot was never going to trouble Carroll and it drifte well wide.
20m A diagonal ball from Mears saw Carr foul Zamora to give the hosts another free kick in a dangerous position two yards from the edge of the box. Tevez again took the kick, but his low effort around the wall was saved by Given.
17m Duff got away from Maschareno on the left, but his low cross was swept away by Mears.
14m Ameobi beat Gabbidon in the air and Martins, who was just onside, screwed the ball across goal and wide with United's best opportunity so far. Before play could continue, Gabbidon needed some attention from the physio following his aerial challenge with Ameobi.
11m Mears' cross from the right saw Zamora rise up with Moore, but his header lacked power and Given collected.
9m Parker's foul on Etherington gave West Ham a free kick right on the edge of the box to the left of centre. Tevez and Konchesky stood over the ball, and it was the Argentinian who took the set piece and saw his curler crash off the bar before Moore turned the ball out for a corner. Bowyer took the flag kick, but the ball eventually ran through to Given.
7m Babayaro tried to create space for a shot from 25 yards after some great play by Martins, but he was eventually crowded out. The Hammers tried to counter-attack through Tevez, but Ramage did well to usher the ball back to Given.
5m Milner won a corner on the right off Konchesky. Duff swung the ball in left footed, but Martins' header was straight at Carroll in the home goal.
2m Newcastle won a free kick inside the first two minutes when Bowyer tripped Babayaro just outside the United penalty area, but Given's long punt downfield came to nothing.
1m West Ham got the game underway attacking the Bobby Moore Stand, with the travelling contingent behind Shay Given's goal in the Centenary Stand.
GLENN Roeder made three changes to the side that won in Estonia against Levadia Tallinn on Thursday for Sunday's visit to Upton Park to face West Ham United.
Shola Ameobi returned at the expense of Antoine Sibierski, lining up alongside Obafemi Martins in attack.
James Milner was handed a start in place of Charles N'Zogbia, who dropped to the bench, while Titus Bramble's injury kept him out so Celestine Babayaro returned at left back with Peter Ramage lining up alongside Craig Moore in the heart of the back four.
