Gary Oliver reports
TITUS Bramble was Newcastle United's matchwinner as they clinched European football next season with a 1-0 win over Chelsea at a raucous St. James' Park.
The big centre-back smashed in a powerful volley 17 minutes from time as Jose Mourinho's champions failed to clear a corner from Emre.
But the Magpies had to compete for the last 15 minutes with only ten men after Stephen Carr was dismissed for a foul on Lassana Diarra.
The Geordie fans gave their team fanatical backing from the stands as the black and whites held on for victory to claim seventh spot in the table and a crack at the Intertoto Cup in July.
SECOND-HALF ACTION UPDATES
Full-time comes and ten-man Newcastle have held on to beat Chelsea and claim seventh spot in the Premiership and an Intertoto Cup berth next season.
90min+2 - Jean Alain Boumsong gets a standing ovation at the Leazes End for a great tackle to halt Arjen Robben.
90min - There will be three minutes of additional time to be played.
90min - Charles N'Zogbia is desperately unlucky not to seal the win at the death as he cuts in from the right and sees his rasping drive somehow kept out by Lenny Pidgeley at his near post.
88min - Craig Moore deliberately obstructs Arjen Robben and can have no complaints about a booking.
86min - Craig Moore, Titus Bramble and then Lee Clark clear waves of Chelsea pressure as things start to get unbearably tense at Gallowgate.
83min - It's backs to the wall time for Newcastle as a capacity St. James' crowd roars them on at raucous levels. Titus Bramble makes a great block to halt Carlton Cole on the edge of the United area. Play is then halted with Lassana Diarra down and needing attention.
81min - Ricardo Carvalho is injured in a clash of heads with Jean Alain Boumsong and the Chelsea ace is replaced by Jimmy Smith.
77min - Down to ten men, Glenn Roeder sacrifices striker Michael Chopra and sends on Lee Clark.
75min - NEWCASTLE RED CARD - Mike Riley infuriates the Newcastle crowd by showing a straight red to Stephen Carr. He fells Lassana Diarra on the East Stand touchline and the referee clearly thinks there was enough in the challenge to warrant a dismissal. It's the fourth time this season the West Yorkshire official has shown a red card to the United player with Carr following Boumsong (Liverpool), Babayaro (Villa) and Taylor (Blackburn). William Gallas is also booked in the scenes that follow.
74min - More great work by Amady Faye, this time conceding a corner to stop a dangerous forward burst from Arjen Robben.
73min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-0): Emre swings over the corner from the left and Amady Faye rises high to nod back towards the far post where Titus Bramble smashes in an unstoppable volley from six yard out.
72mIn - Emre hosts a free-kick into the Chelsea penalty area which Amady Faye nods towards the back post. It drops for Charles N'Zogbia and his shot is deflected behind by Ricardo Carvalho.
70mins - Emre has his name taken by Mike Riley for a shove on Ricardo Carvalho.
69min - Chelsea have the ball in the back of the Magpies' net but again it's ruled out for offside. Maniche sees his right-foot strike Shay Given's left-hand post and Shaun Wright-Phillips is flagged when he puts in the rebound.
66min - Joe Cole swings over a left-wing cross aimed for Maniche, but Shay Given comes from his line to collect.
63min - Another challenge from Celestine Babayaro, but this time it's a legal one to deny Shaun Wright-Phillips at the expense of a corner. Arjen Robben crosses from the left and his effort is flicked to the back post by Carlton Cole for William Gallas to put in, but a raised flag for offside cuts short Chelsea celebrations. Elsewhere, news has come through that Geordie fans didn't want to hear as Bolton Wanderers take the lead against Birmingham City at the Reebok Stadium.
60min - Arjen Robben gets away from both Jean Alain Boumsong and Titus Bramble before he is cynically tripped by Celestine Babayaro midway inside the United half. Chelsea players are furious with the challenge, but because he is not last man, referee Mike Riley says the offence is only worthy of a yellow card. Robben delivers the free-kick himself and Ricardo Carvalho sends a looping header over from 15 yards.
56min - Shola Ameobi sprays a pass out to Stephen Carr on the right and he advances before rifling an angled drive across Lenny Pidgeley and narrowly wide of the Gallowgate End goal from 20 yards. At the other end, Maniche tries a shot of his own from similar distance but it is always travelling wide.
53min - Charles N'Zogbia goes into the book for a late challenge on countryman William Gallas.
52min - Shaun Wright-Phillips creates space for a shot on Chelsea's right but Shay Given clings on to his rising drive at his near post.
51min - Amady Faye wins a great challenge with William Gallas midway inside the Chelsea half and ball breaks for Shola Ameobi, only for the striker to lose his footing on the edge of the box and allow Ricardo Carvalho to clear the danger.
50min - Maniche releases Shaun Wright-Phillips down the right but his low pull-back intended for Carlton Cole is intercepted and cleared by Craig Moore.
46min - There are jeers for Shaun Wright-Phillips when he first touches the ball from Newcastle fans still angry about the way the Chelsea man got Robbie Elliott sent off in the FA Cup quarter-final meeting between the teams at Stamford Bridge in March.
Chelsea make a double change at the break as Robert Huth is replaced by Shaun Wright-Phillips and Carlton Cole replaces Damien Duff.
FIRST-HALF ACTION UPDATES
Half-time comes with the game still goalless. Newcastle have enjoyed the better of the play in the opening period but the loss of Nolberto Solano with a shin injury is a blow.
45min - Two minutes of added time will be played at the end of the first half.
43min - Celestine Babayaro gets the better of Glenn Johnson on the left, but once again the final ball is a waste. In United's next attack, Michael Chopra briefly has hope of stealing in before his is denied by William Gallas.
41min - Chelsea have a great chance to open the scoring when Lassana Diarra picks up the ball in the centre of the pitch and springs Damien Duff in the inside right channel. He advances into the box but his attempts to beat his countryman Shay Given are thwarted when he saves low to his right.
40min - Celestine Babayaro feeds Charles N'Zogbia on the left and the Frenchman glides past Glenn Johnson only to be let down by his final cross which drifts behind the Leazes End goal.
38min - Newcastle have a right-wing corner that Emre delivers. Chelsea keeper Lenny Pidgeley fumbles but referee Mike Riley claims Shola Ameobi handles in controlling the loose ball and a free-kick to the visitors is awarded.
36min - News from the dressing room confirms Nolberto Solano's injury is to his left shin.
35min - Charles N'Zogbia tries a shot from 25 yards after picking up the ball in the inside right channel, but his effort goes tamely wide.
32min - Shola Ameobi stands up a dangerous cross from the left that sees Paulo Ferreira forced to head behind for a corner. Emre's right-wing delivery is missed by everyone.
31min - There's a blow for Newcastle as it is clear Nolberto Solano cannot continue. On comes Jean Alain Boumsong and a tactical reshuffle is forced upon Glenn Roeder, who switches to a 3-5-2 formation with Stephen Carr and Celestine Babayaro operating as wing-backs. Solano had been receiving treatment on the East Stand touchline from Derek Wright but is finally taken away on a stretcher to huge applause from the Geordie crowd.
29min - Chelsea have a right-wing corner that Damien Duff delivers low to the near post where Robert Huth can only steer his effort wide.
28min - Play comes to a halt as both Nolberto Solano and Arjen Robben require treatment for separate injuries.
25min - Lassana Diarra is lucky to escape a yellow card for a crude lunge at Charles N'Zogbia. From Emre's left-wing free-kick, Shola Ameobi heads back to Nolberto Solano. The Peruvian's overhead effort is blocked by Ricardo Carvalho and Amady Faye fires over from 18 yards from the loose ball.
22min - Ricardo Carvalho upends Shola Ameobi right on the edge of the Chelsea box and the Portuguese star becomes the first player to be booked by referee Mike Riley. Home fans are furious that the Blues wall appears to be reluctant to move back the required 10 yards - and the jeers grow louder when Nolberto Solano's effort cannot clear the head of Lassana Diarra.
21min - Damien Duff forces a left-wing corner off Craig Moore. The Irishman delivers but Stephen Carr clears at the near post.
17min - Michael Chopra has made a lively start and he wins a free-kick when he forces Robert Huth into a foul 25 yards from the Chelsea goal. This time it's taken by Nolberto Solano and his curler is agonisingly a fraction wide of Lenny Pidgeley's left-hand post.
13min - Ricardo Carvalho flattens Shola Ameobi and Newcastle have a free-kick 30 yards out. Emre takes it but his left-foot curling effort goes over the top by some distance.
10min - Lenny Pidgeley remains the busiest of the two keepers. Firsly he saves an overhead Michael Chopra effort before then seeing a fierce Nolberto Solano effort flash past his left-hand post from 25 yards. Seconds later, Pidgeley has to again clear frantically from an onrushing Chopra, this time from a weak Ricardo Carvalho backpass.
9min - Emre tries to work another shooting chance for the Magpies, but he is well shackled by Lassana Diarra and his deflected effort travels through comfortably to Lenny Pidgeley. Seconds later, however, the Chelsea keeper has an awkward backpass from Joe Cole to deal with and only just manages to hack it clear as Michael Chopra chases him down.
5min - Arjen Robben makes a quick dart into the Newcastle penalty area but he is denied by a fine challenge from former Chelsea star Celestine Babayaro.
3min - Nolberto Solano crosses from the right aiming for Shola Ameobi. The ball is headed clear by Ricardo Carvalho only as far as Emre and he takes a touch before unleashing a 30-yard drive that only narrowly clears Lenny Pidgeley's crossbar.
1min - Arjen Robben picks the ball up infield on the right and drifts inside past Craig Moore and Amady Faye before firing low and wide back across Shay Given's goal.
Newcastle United kick the game off attacking the Leazes End. Chelsea have already lost goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini in the warm-up and are down to four subs with Lenny Pidgeley taking over between the posts.
MICHAEL Owen was not involved for Newcastle United in the final match of the season as the Magpies hosted Chelsea at St. James' Park looking for the three points that would secure Intertoto Cup qualification.
The club's record signing had complained of a pain in his right foot on his comeback from a fractured metatarsal in last weekend's goalless draw at Birmingham City, and Glenn Roeder decided not to risk him against Jose Mourinho's champions.
There was a boost for Newcastle, however, with the return to action of Emre, with the Turkish star having missed the last four matches with a groin problem.
That meant Matty Pattison dropped down to the bench.
Mourinho, meanwhile, brought his Blues north missing a host of star names. Petr Cech, Asier Del Horno, Claude Makelele, Michael Essien, Frank Lampard, Hernan Crespo, Didier Drogba, Eidur Gudjohnsen and John Terry were all missing from the Chelsea party that arrrived at Gallowgate.
And there was a blow for Chelsea when stand-in captain Carlo Cudicini sprained his ankle in the pre-game warm-up. That meant Lenny Pidgeley started between the posts and the visitors had only four subs on the bench.
