MATCH REPORT

A STUNNING second half comeback saw Newcastle take the points from Monday's Wear/Tyne derby at the Stadium of Light.

The Magpies were slow to start in the first half, and they went in trailing at the interval after Justin Hoyte fired the home side in front.

But Michael Chopra got United back on level terms seconds after coming on on the hour mark, and a minute later Alan Shearer scored from the spot after Hoyte fouled Charles N'Zogbia.

N'Zogbia then scored a fine solo goal to put the result beyond doubt, and Albert Luque scored the fourth to complete a remarkable turnaround.

SECOND HALF UPDATES

90min - Three minutes of time are added on at the end, and the Magpies fans behind the goal were in fine voice at the final whistle

87min - NEWCASTLE GOAL - Albert Luque takes advantage of a defensive error between Caldwell and Collins and races clear before chipping the ball over davis to complete the rout.

85min - Liam Lawrence fires wide from 22 yards. At the other end of the stadium, the travelling Toon Army are raising the roof in praise of their team's second-half performance.

83min - Dean Whitehead delivers a deep free-kick from halfway and it is headed behind by Craig Moore for a corner. Liam Lawrence's left-wing flag-kick is nodded behind by Titus Bramble and Lawrence then retrieves Julio Arca's corner and wins another. Celestine Babayaro and Titus Bramble make timely blocks to concede a fourht corner in two minutes but this time Kevin Kyle heads straight at Shay Given.

81min - Titus Bramble is booked for a foul and Sunderland have another right-sided free-kick. Liam Lawrence's deliver goes over everyone and the Magpies clear their lines eventually.

80min - Sunderland have a free-kick on the right that Julio Arca delivers deep, but United stand firm to clear.

79min - Charles N'Zogbia tries to make it 4-1 but when he goes to pull the trigger Steve Caldwell makes a great saving challenge for the hosts. N'Zogbia, however, is left grounded as a result.

77min - George McCartney goes into the book for an ugly lunge on Kieron Dyer.

75min - Sunderland have a free-kick and it's a dangerous delivery from Julio Arca that Amady Faye heads behind. In the next attack, Arca delivers a useful cross to the back post and Chris Brown heads wide.

73min - George McCartney forces Nolberto Solano to concede a corner but Shay Given punches clear.

71min - Alan Shearer is clearly unable to continue after the heavy challenge. He has to come off and that means Albert Luque takes over.

68min - Sunderland take off Jon Stead and send on Kevin Kyle.

67min - Alan Shearer needs treatment after a heavy challenge by Tommy Miller and Julio Arca.

66min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-3): Kieron Dyer plays in Charles N'Zogbia and he drifts past Justin Hoyte, Tommy Miller and Danny Collins to dispatch a left-foot strike past Kelvin Davis. Three goals in seven minutes have sickened Sunderland!!

64min - Sunderland have a free-kick as Craig Moore fouls Dean Whitehead 20 yards out. Jon Stead clips it over the wall and it is saved by Shay Given.

64min - Sunderland send on Julio Arca for Daryl Murphy.

61min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-2): Who else but Alan Shearer to put the ball on the spot, compose himself and bury his strike past Kelvin Davis. What a turnaround!

60min - NEWCASTLE PENALTY - The Magpies strike again! This time Justin Hoyte pulls back Charles N'Zogbia and United have a penalty.

59min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-1): What an amazing substitution as Michael Chopra scores within seconds of coming on. A foul on Kieron Dyer sees the Magpies get a free-kick that Titus Bramble lanches goalward and Chopra gets ahead of kelvin Davis and pokes in for a sensational strike.

59min - Glenn Roeder makes a change and sends on Michael Chopra for Lee Clark.

57min - Lee Clark gets a yellow card for a late challenge on Tommy Miller on halfway.

55min - The Magpies carry the ball upfield but when Charles N'Zogbia elects to shoot from 25 yards he fires horribly high and wide.

54min - The Black Cats raid down the left as Dean Whitehead feeds Jon Stead, who gets away from Stephen Carr but then fires in a cross that no one can reach.

51min - Sunderland's first threat of the second-half comes through Jon Stead as he sets off on a mazy run that takes him into the Newcastle box before he is crowded out and Craig Moore clears.

48min - United's next attack comes down the left. Charles N'Zogbia works a yard off Justin Hoyte but his cross flashes across goal and behind.

47min - Newcastle are first to show after the interval, but when Stephen Carr crosses from the right there is no one in the penalty area to challenge Kelvin Davis.

The second-half begins with neither side having made any changes at the break.

FIRST-HALF ACTION UPDATES

Half-time comes with the home team leading courtesy of that Justin Hoyte goal in the 32nd minute.

45min+3 - The last action of the half sees Craig Moore penalised for a foul on Chris Brown giving Sunderland a free-kick 30 yards out. Liam Lawrence takes it and it only clears the crossbar by inches.

45min+2 - Charles N'Zogbia crosses to the right and sends over a low cross that is cleared only as far as Celestine Babayaro. He steadies himself before rifling over.

45min - Kieron Dyer thinks he has a chance to go clear on a Charles N'Zogbia flick, but a raised flag for offside just about sums up the Magpies' miserable first-half.

43min - Tommy Miller handles the ball in a midfield battle with Lee Clark and Newcastle have a free-kick 35 yards out. Nolberto Solano takes it, but can only curl it straight into the arms of Kelvin Davis.

42min - Sunderland remain the dominant side and come close to a second goal. Liam Lawrence fires in a drive from 25 yards that hits the head of Titus Bramble and only just goes wide. Lawrence crosses to the left to take the corner, which is headed clear by Bramble.

38min - Liam Lawrence turns Celestine Babayaro inside out and crosses into the Newcastle box where Titus Bramble clears. Lawrence then finds himself quickly up against Babayaro again and this time tries a curling effort that Shay Given saves comfortably.

34min - Newcastle try to respond and Kieron Dyer carries the ball to the edge of the Sunderland penalty area. When he is crowded out, the ball breaks to Alan Shearer but his drive is well wide.

32min - SUNDERLAND GOAL (1-0): The hosts take the lead as Jon Stead gets away from Titus Bramble on the right and crosses low to the near post, where it is collected by Dean Whitehead, and he then helps it across goal where Justin Hoyte tucks the ball away from six yards.

30min - Nolberto Solano swings in a deep cross that Justin Hoyte can only head clear as far as Charles N'Zogbia. The Frenchman's delivery from the left, however, is poor and the ball drifts behind for a goal kick.

28min - Charles N'Zogbia gets the better of Dean Whitehead to deliver a left-wing cross that Danny Collins clears. Celestine Babayaro recycles possession and is fouled by a combination of Dean Whitehead and Liam Lawrence. Nolberto Solano's free-kick is punched clear by Kelvin Davis but he regains his position in time to collect the ball when it is put back in from 25 yards by Stephen Carr.

26min - Lee Clark brings down Jon Stead and Sunderland have a free-kick in the inside left channel. Dean Whitehead takes it quickly but is off target with his aim.

23min - The Magpies are quickly back on the attack as Stephen Carr swings over a deep cross from the right. Amady Faye challenges for it with Justin Hoyte, and the Sunderland defender gets the vital touch before going down and needing treatment.

22min - Newcastle force their first corner of the game. Good work by Celestine Babayaro sees him play the ball infield to Kieron Dyer, who helps it across to Stephen Carr before his attempted cross is put behind by George McCartney. Daryl Murphy heads clear from Nolberto Solano's cross.

18min - Sunderland force two more corners in quick succession. The first is headed behind by Titus Bramble and there is a delay before the second one can be taken as Dean Whitehead needs treatment. When the second one is delivered by Liam Lawrence from the left, Amady Faye heads clear.

16min - The home side have certainly got themselves fired up for this one and force another corner as Celestine Babayaro stops Liam Lawrence crossing from the right. Titus Bramble heads clear but the Black Cats quickly get a left-wing corner as Bramble charges down a Jon Stead shot. Shay Given punches clear.

15min - Sunderland get forward in numbers and Jon Stead finds himself with a shooting chance from 20 yards only to screw his right-foot effort well wide.

14min - A combination of Dean Whitehead and Chris Brown bring down Charles N'Zogbia and United have a free-kick on the left. It is taken by Nolberto Solano but Kelvin Davis comes and collects the inswinging delivery.

12min - Craig Moore is making a good start for the Magpies and on this occasion he produces no-nonsense defending to block off Dean Whitehead as he tries to get on to a flick from Chris Brown.

9min - When the free-kick is finally delivered by Dean Whitehead it is headed clear by Amady Faye.

8min - The hosts have made a positive start and Craig Moore has to concede another corner, this time cutting out a Liam Lawrence cross. Alan Shearer heads clear the flag-kick but then moments later cuts down the midfielder and gives away a free-kick in a dangerous position. The Black Cats fans are furious that referee Chris Foy doesn't book the Geordie skipper.

5min - Sunderland win the game's first corner. Justin Hoyte tries to play a ball up to the byline on the right for Liam Lawrence but Craig Moore puts it behind with a sliding challenge. Lawrence then has two attempts to find the right cross but fails each time.

4min - United win a free-kick midway inside the Sunderland half. Nolberto Solano plays it short to Stephen Carr who fires in a shot that is always going to be too high to trouble Kelvin Davis in the home goal.

3min - It's a typically frenetic start to the derby. Newcastle win a throw deep down the left and Celestine Babayaro picks it up on the corner of the Sunderland penalty area only to fire well wide.

Newcastle, wearing white shorts and socks along with their traditional black and white striped jerseys, are defending the end containing the travelling Geordie support in the first half.

TEAM NEWS

GLENN Roeder made three changes to the side that beat Wigan on Saturday for the Easter Monday trip to Sunderland.

Shola Ameobi and Lee Bowyer were both ruled out through injury after being hurt in the 3-1 win over the Latics, so Amady Faye and Lee Clark both started in the middle of midfield with Kieron Dyer pushing up to partner Alan Shearer in attack.

The third change came at left back, where fit-again Celestine Babayaro was preferred to Robbie Elliott.

There were recalls on the bench for Jean Alain Boumsong and Albert Luque.

Sunderland, who were relegated on Friday despite picking up a point against Manchester United at Old Trafford, were skippered by magpies old boy Steve Caldwell, while their star player Julio Arca was only considered fit enough for a place amongst the substitutes after shaking off a hamstring problem.
