NEWCASTLE United made it three wins in a row with a convincing 3-1 victory over Wigan Athletic at St. James' Park.

And for the first time since April 2004, the Magpies came from behind to win a Premiership match. The last occasion being a 2-1 defeat of Chelsea at Gallowgate.

Jimmy Bullard conjured up a magical free-kick to fire the Latics ahead in the fifth minute, but the Magpies were level in the 28th minute after Alan Shearer converted a penalty awarded for a foul on sub Michael Chopra by Reto Ziegler.

Titus Bramble then powered in a header unmarked from a Nolberto Solano corner to give Glenn Roeder's team a half-time lead. The first 45 minutes had also seen an incredible five subs used as Lee Bowyer (hamstring) and Shola Ameobi (damaged teeth) went down for United and the visitors lost central defensive pairing Arjan De Zeeuw (broken collarbone) and Matt Jackson (knee) along with the concussed Lee McCulloch.

Shearer grabbed his second of the afternoon - and 205th goal for the club - when he was sent clear by Chopra and rounded John Filan to score.

The win lifted Newcastle into the top half of the table for the first time this season and was the perfect confidence booster ahead of the Tyne-Wear derby at Sunderland on Easter Monday.

90min - Pascal Chimbonda fouls Alan Shearer 30 yards out. Nolberto Solano takes the free-kick but it flies over the Leazes End goal.

88min - Jason Roberts tries to get the better of Titus Bramble in the race for a forward pass, but the Newcastle defender blocks off his route to goal.

86min - Both Nolberto Solano and Charles N'Zogbia send over inviting crosses in the space of ten seconds, but neither come to anything.

84min - David Thompson hits a snapshot from 25 yards that Shay Given turns behind diving full stretch to his left. Stephen Carr then heads clear from Reto Ziegler's flag-kick.

83min - Great vision from Amady Faye sees the midfielder pick out the galloping run of Stephen Carr on the right flank. However, Wigan repel the Irishman's cross.

81min - Paul Scharner makes a timely headed clearance for Wigan just as Alan Shearer tries to flick the ball over him and get Michael Chopra breaking clear from halfway.

79min - Despite being 3-1 up, United are having to stay alert defensively. This time Henri Camara crosses low from the right but Stephen Carr is first to reach it and clears.

77min - A neat move from Wigan sees Jimmy Bullard play a pass into Henri Camara and then pick up the return. He unleashes a low drive from 25 yards but Shay Given makes a confident take diving to his right.

74min - Glenn Roeder makes his final switch. Off comes Kieron Dyer to great applause with Lee Clark taking over in midfield.

73min - Michael Chopra turns provider for Alan Shearer again, with a neat ball to his skipper in the inside right channel. Shearer fires across John Filan but the ball flies wide of goal.

69min - Nolberto Solano and Kieron Dyer dovetail neatly on the right and when the latter crosses, Alan Shearer just misses out on a connection with a flying header before David Thompson nods it behind for a corner.

67min - Craig Moore receives his fourth yellow card in five games for a foul on Henri Camara. Wigan have a free-kick 30 yards out but Jimmy Bullard fires over.

66min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (3-1): Wigan don't survive this time as Alan Shearer gets his second. Michael Chopra picks up the ball midway inside the Latics half and then waits for his skipper to spring the visiting defence, being played onside by Graham Kavanagh, before rounding John Filan and netting at the Leazes End. That's now goal number 205 as a Newcastle United player.

64min - Newcastle are inches away from going 3-1 ahead. Robbie Elliott delivers a long throw-in that Alan Shearer and Michael Chopra both help on and it is picked up by Nolberto Solano. His smart turn and rasping shot sees John Filan fumble but the ball drops on the line and he grabs it at the second attempt.

63min - Paul Scharner is deservedly booked after a cynical foul on Charles N'Zogbia to stop the Frenchman exchanging passes with Nolberto Solano. Solano then plays a ball to N'Zogbia on the left, but his low cross-shot is cleared.

62min - Henri Camara tries to get Wigan going, cutting infield from the left and skipping a couple of challenges, but when he shoots from 20 yards, it lacks any real power.

61min - Charles N'Zogbia holds the ball on the left by the corner flag before laying it back to Robbie Elliott. His looping cross clips the angle of the upright of John Filan's back post, but when Nolberto Solano heads the ball back goalwards, first Andreas Johansson and then Jimmy Bullard clear.

59min - Kieron Dyer is down needing treatment after Graham Kavanagh treads o n his knee in a midfield skirmish. Thanfully the Toon star is able to continue.

55min - Robbie Elliott's crossfield ball picks out Nolberto Solano on the far corner of the Wigan box. The Peruvian heads it back across goal and Leighton Baines has to head behind for a left-wing corner. Two more flag-kicks are quickly won on the opposite side by United, but Charles N'Zogbia cannot supply the right service on this occasion.

54min - Charles N'Zogbia and Kieron Dyer lead a forward charge for Newcastle before the latter releases Nolberto Solano on the right. His low cross aimed for Alan Shearer is expertly intercepted by Paul Scharner, although the Geordie skipper was flagged up for offside.

53min - Titus Bramble earns applause from the home crowd as he wins his race against Jason Roberts to head a forward punt from Leighton Baines back to Shay Given.

51min - Wigan have possession through David Thompson, but he is bundled over by Amady Faye for a free-kick midway inside the Newcastle half. Reto Ziegler then sees a shot deflected out of play before Thompson eventually hooks an effort towards the Gallowgate End goal from the Milburn Stand touchline and Shay Given makes a comfortable catch.

47min - Michael Chopra shows great reaction speed to rob Reto Ziegler and release Nolberto Solano. He crosses deep from the right and Leighton Baines has to head behind to stop Alan Shearer reaching the ball. The corner comes to nothing.

That is the end of an amazing first-half which has seen Newcastle United come from behind to establish a 2-1 lead. That has come at the cost of losing Lee Bowyer and Shola Ameobi, while Wigan have had to use all three of their permitted substitutions with centre-backs Matt Jackson and Arjan De Zeeuw limping out of battle along with concussion victim Lee McCulloch.

45min+4 - Uriah Rennie infuriates Michael Chopra and the Geordie crowd when he refuses to give a free-kick as the striker is bundled over by Pascal Chimbonda on the edge of the box. The Latics break upfield and the last action of the half sees Graham Kavanagh fire narrowly wide from 25 yards.

45min+2 - Titus Bramble gives away a free-kick for a foul on Jimmy Bullard in a similar position to where the Latics scored their opening goal. Again the Wigan midfielder delivers a right-footed effort curling away from Shay Given, but this time it is wide of the target.

45min+1 - Titus Bramble rises above Henri Camara to head clear a right-wing cross from David Thompson.

45min - Not surprisingly there are four minutes of additional time to be played before the break.

44min - Kieron Dyer just strays offside as Alan Shearer and Michael Chopra combine to create an opening. Incredibly, Wigan boss Paul Jewell now has to make his final change fo the afternoon BEFORE half-time as Henri Camara takes over from a groggy looking Lee McCulloch.

40min - Great hold-up play by Alan Shearer against Paul Scharner sees him feed Charles N'Zogbia. He advances in the inside left channel only to see his shot charged away by Leighton Baines. There is yet another hold-up as Lee McCulloch needs treatment.

37min - Michael Chopra is keen to get his name on the scoresheet and threatens to find a way through the Latics defence, only to be eventually crowded out before Reto Ziegler clears.

36min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (2-1): The respite is only temporary for Wigan as the Magpies go in front from the flag-kick. It is delivered from the right by Nolberto Solano and Titus Bramble is left with a free header which he powers in from ten yards to claim his first goal of the season.

35min - Michael Chopra is out of luck again as this time a great saving challenge from Pascal Chimbonda at the expense of a corner prevents Alan Shearer releasing his strike partner.

34min - Great trickery from Charles N'Zogbia sees him cross from the left, but the ball eludes everyone before it is retrieved by Nolberto Solano on the opposite flank. It's fed to Kieron Dyer in the inside right channel and his low cross is almost turned in by Michael Chopra at the back post only for Leighton Baines to make a desperate last-ditch block.

28min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-1): A penalty at the Gallowgate End - and who else but Alan Shearer to score! The Toon skipper puts the ball on the spot and sends John Filan the wrong way, netting to the Aussie's left and levelling the scores for goal number 204 as a Magpie.

27min - NEWCASTLE PENALTY: Charles N'Zogbia volleys in a cross from the left that sees Reto Ziegler grapple with Michael Chopra. Uriah Rennie looks to his assistant on the Milburn Stand touchline who indicates a foul and the official points to the spot.

27min - Leighton Baines has his name taken by Uriah Rennie for a cynical foul on Charles N'Zogbia to stop the young Frenchman in his tracks.

24min - Kieron Dyer leads a forward charge for Newcastle, but is fouled just as he tries to play in Nolberto Solano. The Magpies have a free-kick 30 yards out and John Filan saves low from the Peruvian.

23min - The injury update from the dressing room confirms Lee Bowyer has a hamstring injury while Shola Ameobi has damaged his two front teeth. For Wigan, Arjan De Zeeuw has a broken collar bone and Matt Jackson has a knee injury.

22min - There is a scare for Newcastle as Craig Moore sends a wayward backpass towards Shay Given and the keeper can only parry it away. Jimmy Bullard collects the loose ball and turns it back for Lee McCulloch, who fires wide across goal from an angle.

20min - Amazingly there is now a FOURTH substitution in the opening 20 minutes. Matt Jackson is obviously still feeling the effects of the earlier collision with Shola Ameobi and John Filan and has to come off. On comes Leighton Baines meaning Wigan are now minus both their first choice centre-backs.

19min - Robbie Elliott is booked for a foul on David Thompson in the centre circle.

18min - The game now has a heavy casualty list before the 20-minute mark has been reached. Shola Ameobi will play no further part in the game and on comes Michael Chopra as Glenn Roeder is forced into a second early change.

17min - Arjan De Zeeuw is clearly unable to continue and on comes Paul Scharner.

15min - Play resumes with United down to ten men as Ameobi disappears down the tunnel with physio Derek Wright for further treatment. When the corner is finally taken, Stephen Carr is penalised for knocking over Arjan De Zeeuw as he clears the flag-kick on the edge of the box. The Dutchman clearly looks in pain and is helped from the field holding his left arm.

13min - Nolberto Solano delivers an inviting cross from the right and Shola Ameobi jumps for it with Wigan pair Matt Jackson and John Filan. The visiting centre-back gets the crucial touch to head it behind for a corner, but all three collide heavily and both Ameobi and Jackson need treatment before play can continue.

11min - David Thompson picks the ball up on the right and plays it infield to Lee McCulloch. He in turn feeds Graham Kavanagh, but the Irishman's 25-yard drive is always drifting wide and is no trouble to his fellow countryman Shay Given.

8min - There is an early injury blow for Glenn Roeder as Lee Bowyer limps out of the action and is replaced by Amady Faye. It is the last thing the Magpies wanted, having already gone into the game without Emre.

8min - Shola Ameobi squanders a golden chance to level the scores. Charles N'Zogbia crosses from the left and his high looping effort is missed by Wigan keeper John Filan. Ameobi has a free header from point-blank range at the back post, but somehow nods it down and wide of a gaping target.

7min - Newcastle try to respond as Shola Ameobi plays Lee Bowyer in down the inside right channel. The midfielder crosses low but Reto Ziegler makes the block.

6min - Wigan go searching for a second goal and Lee McCulloch's mishit shot from 25 yards falls to Jason Roberts inside the penalty area, but fortunately Craig Moore makes the block.

5min - WIGAN GOAL (0-1): United are stunned as the Latics take the lead. Titus Bramble is penalised by Uriah Rennie for bundling over David Thompson 25 yards out and the visitors have a free-kick in a central position. Jimmy Bullard takes it, and he delivers  a beautiful right-foot effort that leaves Shay Given rooted to the spot as it nestles in the back of the Leazes End net.

3min - The Magpies register the game's first shot on target. Neat play involving Shola Ameobi and Nolberto Solano eventually sees the ball run for Kieron Dyer. He shoots with the outside of his right boot from 16 yards, but the ball is too close to John Filan.

2min - Newcastle win a throw on the right, and Nolberto Solano's delivery is flicked on by Alan Shearer into the path of Shola Ameobi. He reaches the byline in the inside right channel only for his cross to land on the roof of John Filan's net.

1min - Wigan are first to threaten as a neat flick from Jason Roberts drops for Lee McCulloch to break forward. He doesn't have the pace to go away from Stephen Carr, however, and Lee Bowyer is quickly back to lend support and play the ball back to Shay Given.

Newcastle United get the game underway attacking the Gallowgate End.

MAGPIES caretaker boss Glenn Roeder was forced to make one change to the side that won 2-1 at  Middlesbrough last Sunday, with Kieron Dyer replacing Emre, who had a groin injury.

The was only Dyer's third Premiership start, and only his fifth of a season plagued by hamstring problems.

Wigan boss Paul Jewell made three changes to the side that drew 1-1 with Birmingham in their last outing. Matt Jackson, David Thompson and Reto Ziegler all came into the team in place of Paul Scharner, Leighton Baines and Gary Teale, who were all on the substitute's bench.
