FULL-TIME REPORT

NEWCASTLE United's Premiership supremacy over north east neighbours Middlesbrough continued after a 2-1 victory at the Riverside Stadium.

The Magpies were ahead in the 29th minute when Dutch midfielder George Boateng put through his own net when trying to clear a Shola Ameobi looping header from Emre's left-wing corner.

And it was Ameobi who doubled the lead in the final seconds of the first half with his seventh league strike of the campaign after good approach play involving the big striker, Nolberto Solano and Stephen Carr.

United were coasting to victory before Boateng scored at the right end 11 minutes from time when his rasping drive deflected off Titus Bramble and past Shay Given.

That meant a nervous finale for Glenn Roeder's side, but they stood firm to record another Tyne-Tees triumph.

SECOND-HALF ACTION UPDATES

90min+3 - Boro force a right-wing corner. Up comes Mark Schwarzer but Amady Faye heads it clear as Newcastle see out time.

90min - Four minutes of additional time will be played.

89min - Robbie Elliott catches George Boateng and Boro have another free-kick in Fabio Rochemback's range. This time t he Brazilian sees his effort hitthe wall and it's behind for a corner that Shola Ameobi and then Alan Shearer hack clear.

87min - Charles N'Zogbia is booked for a foul on James Morrison.

86min - Boro are winning lots of free-kicks late on and forcing United to defend deep. In this instance Mark Viduka claims a handball against Robbie Elliott but referee Alan Wiley stands firm in the face of home pressure.

84min - Robbie Elliott is penalised for a foul on Mark Viduka and Boro have a free-kick 20 yards out. Fabio Rochemback's effort is destined for goal but Shay Given gets his right hand to it and pushes it to safety.

82min - Glenn Roeder withdraws Emre and sends on Amady Faye.

79min - BORO GOAL (1-2): Fabio Rochemback plays a free-kick from just inside the Newcastle half into the penalty box where Mark Viduka chests it back into ther path of George Boateng. The Dutchman drills in a shot that takes a big deflection off Titus Bramble and leaves Shay Given helpless.

78min - Emre picks up on a loose ball and tries a low shot from 35 yards that is easily taken by Mark Schwarzer. At the other end, Mark Viduka tries to wriggle his way into a shooting position, but Titus Bramble and Lee Bowyer block his run.

73min - Doriva hauls down Kieron Dyer on United's right and the Magpies have a free-kick that sees Emre deliver deep to the far post where Mark Schwarzer claims the ball unchallenged.

71min - Massimo Maccarone is deservedly cautioned for a late lunge on Emre.

69min - Emre gifts possession to Yakubu under no pressure whatsoever, and the burly Nigerian advances to the edge of the box before being tripped by Craig Moore, who earns a booking for the foul. Fabio Rochemback's drive is deflected behind for a corner.

66min - Lee Bowyer is fouled by Fabio Rochemback midway inside the Boro half, and the Brazilian gets a yellow card for dissent. Before the free-kick is taken, Glenn Roeder sends on Kieron Dyer to take over from Nolberto Solano.

64min - Newcastle break forward through Lee Bowyer who sees a goalbound drive from the inside right position strike Chris Riggott. Ugo Ehiogu only half clears before Fabio Rochemback hauls down Nolberto Solano and United have a free-kick on the edge of the box. Emre takes it, and it drifts just agonisingly wide with home keeper Mark Schwazer rooted to the spot.

63min - A stricken Davies is carried from the field and on comes Massimo Maccarone as Boro's third and final sub.

60min - Andrew Davies and Lee Bowyer are both grounded after an aerial collision. Bowyer is able to continue after treatment, but a stretcher is needed for the Boro defender.

58min - Shola Ameobi becomes the second Newcastle player to be booked after a foul on George Boateng.

56min - Stephen Carr knocks the ball forward from deep in his right-back position, and just for a second, it seems Alan Shearer will run clear from Ugo Ehiogu, but the Boro defender uses a hand to try and take the ball away from the Toon skipper and the Magpies get a free-kick, from which Emre's effort strikes the home wall.

53min - Ugo Ehiogu fouls Shola Ameobi 25 yards out and Newcastle have a free-kick in a central position. Nolberto Solano's low curler clips off Andrew Davies on the edge of the Boro wall and just goes wide of Mark Schwarzer's left-hand post for a corner. From Emre's right-sided flag-kick, Alan Shearer heads over.

49min - Mark Viduka gets up to win a high ball and nod it down for James Morrison. He then tries to tee up the overlapping Andrew Davies for a cross, but Charles N'Zogbia backtracks to halt the attack.

Boro make a double switch at the break. On come Mark Viduka and Andrew Taylor, replacing Adam Johnson and Franck Queudrue respectively.

FIRST-HALF ACTION UPDATES

Half-time comes with the Magpies firmly in control of proceedings thanks to a George Boateng own goal and that low strike on the stroke of the interval from Shola Ameobi for his second goal in as many games.

45min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (0-2): A brilliant team goal sickens the hosts on the stroke of half-time, with Shola Ameobi starting and finishing the move. He stretches to play a ball to Stephen Carr, who then exchanges passes with Nolberto Solano before the ball rolls to Ameobi in the inside right position to drill it across Mark Scwarzer abd into the far corner of the net.

43min - Emre gives the ball away cheaply deep inside his own half and Boro force a couple of corners in quick succession. From the second, the ball drops for Adam Johnson on the edge of the box and he lashes it high into the stands.

40min - Boro have a free-kick 35 yards out after Nolberto Solano is adjudged to have tripped Fabio Rochemback. The Brazilian takes the kick himself, but his low effort travels harmlessly through to Shay Given.

37min - More slick attacking play sees Nolberto Solano cut in from the right and slip a pass to Charles N'Zogbia. The Frenchman's low shot takes the slightest of deflections off Ugo Ehiogu to go behind for a right-wing corner that sees Shola Ameobi head wide at the far post.

35min - Newcastle have some defending to do and this time Craig Moore does well to get in the way of a Yakubu shot from the edge of the box.

33min - Shola Ameobi is furious when referee Alan Wiley turns down his penalty appeal. The Newcastle striker takes a touch to collect a Stephen Carr pass and then goes down under a sliding challenge from Chris Riggott. His appeal looked a valid one, but the official waves play on to United's fury.

32min - The Magpies go looking for a second goal as Charles N'Zogbia drives forward and shoots from 30 yards, only to clear the crossbar.

29min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (0-1): Nolberto Solano swings over a corner from the left and Shola Ameobi gets up at the back post to nod back across goal. A host of shirts are underneath the ball and it appears as though George Boateng, under pressure from Lee Bowyer and Titus Bramble, nods into his own net while trying to clear.

28min - Only a superb last-ditch interception from Ugo Ehiogu prevents Lee Bowyer getting on to a Shola Ameobi flick and United have a corner.

25min - Emre is booked for a late challenge on George Boateng. Before that, Doriva comes to Boro's aid at the right time to clear a Lee Bowyer cross after he races on to a Shola Ameobi flick.

20min - There is a scare for United as Fabio Rochemback hoists a ball forward and Yakubu chases it into the penalty area. The Nigerian tries to head it past Shay Given, but gets no power on the ball to pose any threat to the visiting keeper. Yakubu takes a tumble and needs treatment before play continues.

16min - Shola Ameobi squanders a glorious chance to break the deadlock. Nolberto Solano lifts a baqll over the top for the big forward, who times his run to perfection and is played onside by Ugo Ehiogu. However, Ameobi then lacks composure and blazes high and wide from an angle 10 yards out when he should have netted.

12min - There is a lucky escape for Ugo Ehiogu in the Boro defence. When Nolberto Solano crosses from the right the centre-back gets in a real tangle trying to clear, and only just cuts out the danger before either Shola Ameobi or Lee Bowyer can pounce.

10min - The Magpies cause problems for themselves when Lee Bowyer plays a short free-kick to Emre and he is immediately dispossessed by George Boateng. Yakubu seizes on the ball and cracks in a shot that cannons away off Titus Bramble. Boro keep up the pressure and win a corner, but when Fabio Rochembaqck delivers it from the right, Franck Queudrue - already sporting a bandage from a head injury sustained on Thursday - needs treatment after an accidental clqash with Craig Moore.

6min - George Boateng fouls Emre to give United a free-kick on the left. Nolberto Solano's centre is headed clear by Fabio Rochemback, but the visitors quickly recycle possession and Charles N'Zogbia has a low cross cleared before another wave of Newcastle pressure sees Solano shoot high over Mark Scwarzer's goal from 25 yards.

4min - Shola Ameobi comes close to giving the Magpies an early lead. The big striker climbs at the back post to nod down a Nolberto Solano right-wing cross. Chris Riggott gets to the ball first ahead of Lee Bowyer, but can only head it straight back to Ameobi who fires just wide at the back post.

3min - Middlesbrough are first to threaten as Doriva clips a ball up the right flank to James Morrison, and his low centre aimed for Yakubu is turned behind by Stephen Carr. The Newcastle right-back then clears the flag-kick from Fabio Rochemback.

Newcastle, wearing their traditional black and white stripes, get the game underway defending the stand where the travelling fans are housed.

TEAM NEWS

GLENN Roeder made just one change to the side that beat Tottenham last week, with fit-again Titus Bramble replacing Peter Ramage in the heart of the back four.

Ramage was on the bench, as was Kieron Dyer who missed out on that 3-1 success over Spurs because of tightness in his hamstrings.

Middlesbrough boss Steve McClaren made four changes to his side following their UEFA Cup win over FC Basel on Thursday evening, with Gareth Southgate and Mark Viduka the most notable absentees from the home side.

McClaren sent out Yakubu as a lone striker in a 4-5-1 formation, with Viduka on the bench alongside their match winner from Thursday, Massimo Maccarone. There was no place in the 16 for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, so often a thorn in Newcastle's side over the last few seasons.
