FULL-TIME REPORT

NEWCASTLE United were beaten 3-1 by Liverpool at St. James' Park on an afternoon Jean Alain Boumsong will want to forget in a hurry.

Six minutes into the second-half, and with the game still very much alive for the Magpies, the French defender miskicked horribly on the edge of his own box and then wrestled down Peter Crouch as he went clear on goal, leaving referee Mike Riley with no option but to brandish a red card and award a penalty, that was converted by Djibril Cisse to effectively end the match.

Both Boumsong and Peter Ramage had earlier failed to deal with the aerial threat of Crouch, who headed home a Jan Kromkamp cross to open the scoring as early as the tenth minute.

England midfielder Steven Gerrard doubled the lead with a crisp 35th minute strike from 16 yards after a neat interplay with Crouch, before Shola Ameobi cut arrears four minutes before the break with a looping header from a Scott Parker cross.

However, any hopes Glenn Roeder's team had of getting back into the game evaporated when Boumsong's moment of misery saw him head for an early bath.

SECOND-HALF ACTION UPDATES

90min - With seconds remaining, Newcastle make their final change as Emre is replaced by Lee Clark. Liverpool also make their third substitution, with Robbie Fowler coming on for Sami Hyypia.

87min - Mike Riley has his notebook out again, this time taking the name of Jamie Carragher for a trip on Emre. When Nolberto Solano finally takes the kick, his low curling effort is saved by Jose Reina.

86min - Daniel Agger is booked by Mike Riley for a foul on Kieron Dyer. Emre's right-sided delivery from the free-kick sees Jose Reina punch clear off the head of Peter Ramage.

84min - Alan Shearer wins a free-kick after being fouled by Sami Hyypia, but Nolberto Solano's delivery is headed clear by Jamie Carragher.

79min - A fantastic save from Shay Given prevents Liverpool going 4-1 up. Xabi Alonso launches a sweet 25-yard strike that is flying towards the net before Given dives to his right to fingertip it behind for a corner. From the flag-kick, there is more brilliance from the Irishman, this time keeping out Jan Kromkamp's volleyed effort.

77min - Another effort at goal from Luis Garcia, and again the Spaniard lacks accuracy, curling wide from 25 yards.

75min - A second change for the visitors sees Steven Gerrard replaced by Xabi Alonso.

73min - Liverpool are stretching their depleted opponents as much as they possibly can now. Daniel Agger sweeps a ball from left to right to pick out Luis Garcia. His cross to the back post is aimed for Harry Kewell, but Nolberto Solano - now playing at right-back as Peter Ramage covers in the middle after Jean Alain Boumsong's red card - is back to intercept.

69min - With Newcastle having to chase the game now, inevitably there are spaces at the back for Liverpool to exploit on the break. This time Luis Garcia has a chance, but like Cisse he's off-target from 20 yards.

65min - Slick play by Liverpool sees Djibril Cisse presented with a shooting chance, but he blazes wide at the Gallowgate End when he might have been better served picking out an unmarked Harry Kewell to his left.

63min - Liverpool make a substitution as Peter Crouch is withdrawn and Luis Garcia takes over.

62min - United win a free kick as Shola Ameobi is fouled by Jamie Carragher. With the Reds expecting a Nolberto Solano strike, he takes them by surprise by playing a short pass into Celestine Babayaro behind the wall, but he lifts his shot high over goal. When the ball goes dead, Glenn Roeder makes a second change as Ameobi is replaced by Kieron Dyer.

60min - Down to ten men, Newcastle get forward well through Lee Bowyer and Alan Shearer. The skipper feeds Nolberto Solano on the right and his dangerous cross is headed behind by Stephen Warnock.

54min - The game has now become a heated one. Refree Mike Riley speaks to Djibril Cisse, who is incurring the wrath of the home crowd before Lee Bowyer is then booked following a challenge on Dietmar Hamann.

52min - LIVERPOOL GOAL (1-3): The spot-kick is finally taken by Djibril Cisse, who sends Shay Given the wrong way, but is then booked for his over-zealous celebrations.

51min - NEWCASTLE RED CARD: A moment of madness by Jean Alain Boumsong sees him dismissed. The Frenchman completely miskicks from a routine clearance and with Peter Crouch about to go clear on goal he hauls down the big striker leaving referee Mike Riley with no option but to red card the player and award a penalty.

49min - Liverpool are first to have an attempt at goal in the second half when Djibril Cisse fires in a well-struck drive from 25 yards, but Shay Given is right behind the ball.

FIRST-HALF ACTION UPDATES

Half-time comes with Newcastle very much back in the game after Shola Ameobi's headed goal in the closing stages of the first period.

44min - The goal has lifted the hosts, and just before half-time they get a free-kick in a dangerous position when Jan Kromkamp trips Shola Ameobi. Nolberto Solano swings the ball in from the left and Jean Alain Boumsong holds his head in his hands after glancing wide with an unmarked header.

41min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-2): A crucial goal back before half-time gets United back into the game. Scott Parker lofts a ball into the Reds penalty area to pick out Shola Ameobi, who has drifted behind Sami Hyypia and cuts the deficit with a looping header over Jose Reina and into the back of the Gallowgate End net for his fifth goal of the campaign.

39min - Peter Ramage is shown a yellow card by referee Mike Riley for bringing down Stephen Warnock.

38min - The Magpies are now up against it as they try to prevent a second successive loss. They force a couple of corners before Jean Alain Boumsong heads over from a Nolberto Solano cross.

35min - LIVERPOOL GOAL (0-2): Djibril Cisse crosses from the right to the back post where Steven Gerrard cushions a header into the feet of Peter Crouch and then takes a return pass from his colleague before dispatching a low angled drive past Shay Given to double the visitors' lead. Newcastle skipper Alan Shearer, however, is furious with referee Mike Riley after insisting United should have been awarded a free-kick before the Reds broke upfield to score.

34min - Dietmar Hamann is the subject of mocking cheers from the Leazes End when he takes a pass from Peter Crouch and fires well wide from 25 yards.

29min - Jose Reina clears unconvincingly for Liverpool off the toes of Shola Ameobi, but when Lee Bowyer is involved for his first action, referee Mike Riley again angers the home crowd by adjudging he has fouled Dietmar Hamann.

28min - An injury blow for Newcastle leaves Glenn Roeder with no choice but to make an early change. Charles N'Zogbia has been limping since suffering a dead leg early on and the Frenchman finally has to admit defeat and come off, with Lee Bowyer taking over.

27min - Liverpool move swiftly upfield when Harry Kewell picks out Djibril Cisse with a fine diagonal ball. Cisse plays it into Steven Gerrard, but his low right-wing cross is claimed by Shay Given.

23min - The Magpies are getting back into the game, and another break sees Scott Parker, Shola Ameobi and Alan Shearer involved before Charles N'Zogbia rifles in a shot from 20 yards. Jose Reina fumbles the effort, but recovers to claim the loose ball just ahead of a lurking Ameobi.

22min - A good chance for Newcastle to level comes when Jean Alain Boumsong's forward punt is laid back into the path of Alan Shearer by Shola Ameobi. The skipper shoots with the outside of his left boot, but it is always going wide.

19min - Liverpool again break down the left with Stephen Warnock releasing Harry Kewell in a slick exchange of passes. The Aussie whips in a low cross that Peter Crouch cannot reach, and when it eventually reaches Djibril Cisse, the angle is too tight for him to do anything other than fire behind into the Leazes End.

14min - Newcastle win a free-kick on their right midway inside the Liverpool half when Sami Hyypia brings down Shola Ameobi. Emre's delivery, however, is harmless and travels straight through into the arms of Jose Reina.

10min - LIVERPOOL GOAL (0-1): Steven Gerrard plays a pass out to Jan Kromkamp midway inside the Newcastle half, and when he crosses from the right to the back post, Peter Crouch gets in between Jean Alain Boumsong and Peter Ramage to head past Shay Given and open the scoring.

8min - Emre gets Newcastle moving forward again when he evades a challenge from Dietmar Hamann, but when he tries to slide a forward pass to Shola Ameobi, it is cut out by Stephen Warnock.

3min - Liverpool break down their left when Harry Kewell feeds Stephen Warnock, but his cross is headed clear by Jean Alain Boumsong. Two minutes later, Warnock is picked out by a Steven Gerrard free-kick and centres this time to the back post where Peter Crouch gets up to head wide.

1min - A lively run by Charles N'Zogbia from deep in his own half takes him past four players but when he tries to release Shola Ameobi up the left flank, Jamie Carragher comes across to cut out the danger. In the Magpies' next forward burst, referee Mike Riley angers the home crowd when he penalises Ameobi for trying to win a ball ahead of Liverpool keeper Jose Reina, even though television replays showed the striker had done nothing wrong.

Liverpool get the game underway with Newcastle United attacking the Gallowgate End in the first half.

TEAM NEWS

NEWCASTLE United caretaker boss Glenn Roeder hoped to get back to winning ways with the visit of Liverpool to St. James' Park.

The Magpies six-game unbeaten start under the former skipper came to an end with a 2-0 defeat at Manchester United, and Roeder was keen to see his players bounce back from that Old Trafford reverse.

Roeder kept faith with the side that lost 2-0 at Old Trafford last weekend, though there was a change on the bench with Craig Moore replacing Albert Luque. This was Moore's first involvement with the first team following the hamstring problems that have troubled him since his summer switch from Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez made five changes to the side that thrashed Fulham 5-1 in midweek, with Fowler having to make do with a place on the bench despite his first goal in his second spell at Anfield. Fernando Morientes was another notable absentee, with Djibril Cisse givent he nod to play alongside Peter Crouch in attack.
