FULL-TIME MATCH REPORT
NOLBERTO Solano was the two-goal toast of Tyneside after bagging a brace to sink Everton at St. James' Park.
The Peruvian midfielder broke the deadlock in the 64th minute of an absorbing encounter, turning the ball home from close range at the Leazes End after a brilliant run from Charles N'Zogbia had set up the chance.
And Solano then conjured up a piece of South American magic 12 minutes later to make the game safe, using the outside of his right boot to curl a wonderful effort around diving debutant keeper Sander Westerveld in the Everton net.
Solano had been denied by the Dutchman during stoppage-time of a first-half in which Emre twice came to the Magpies' rescue with goal-line clearances to keep out two David Weir headers, each time from Mikel Arteta's right-wing corners.
The victory means United have still to concede at home under Glenn Roeder's temporary stewardship, while there was also a first-team debut for Matty Pattison in the dying second as the Geordies leapfrogged David Moyes' team.
SECOND-HALF ACTION UPDATES
90min+2 - There is a first taste of Premiership action for Matty Pattison as he replaces Charles N'Zogbia.
90min - An extra three minutes of play have been added on by the officials. James Beattie collects a pass from Leon Osman and fires a shot across Shay Given, but wide of goal.
86min - Celestine Babayaro gives away a free-kick delivered by Mikel Arteta from Everton's right. It finds Joseph Yobo at the back post, but his header is a poor one and goes behind for a goal-kick.
79min - There is a standing ovation for Emre as he is withdrawn and replaced by Lee Clark.
78min - Scott Parker gets a yellow card from referee Graham Poll for a foul on Mikel Arteta.
76min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (2-0): It's another goal for Nolberto Solano - and what an absolute belter it is! This time the ball is helped across from the left by Charles N'Zogbia to Lee Bowyer, who in turn helps it to the Peruvian star. He takes a touch to bring it inside before using the outside of his right boot to dispatch a beautiful curling effort beyind the diving Sander Westerveld.
74min - Everton make a second change. This time Tim Cahill is the player withdrawn and Lee Carsley takes over.
69min - Scott Parker's crunching challenge on Tim Cahill sets up a sweeping Newcastle move that sees Emre pick out Nolberto Solano, who cushions a ball into Lee Bowyer's path before his attempt on goal is blocked behind by Sander Westerveld for a corner. Emre's right-wing delivery is cleared to Bowyer, who heads it to Parker and he volleys narrowly wide from 25 yards.
68min - Everton make a change as former Sunderland player Kevin Kilbane is replaced by James McFadden.
64min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-0): Emre picks up the ball on the left and lays it back to Charles N'Zogbia. The Frenchman drives forward, past a flat-footed Alan Stubbs and then fires in a low cross that Nolberto Solano turns into the Leazes End net for his third goal of the season.
63min - A weak header from Celestine Babayaro presents the ball to Tim Cahill 25 yards out, but the Australian's shot is blocked by Robbie Elliott.
59min - More watchful defending by Robbie Elliott stops James Beattie getting forward. At the other end, Charles N'Zogbia tees a ball up for Lee Bowyer, but the Magpies' midfielder doesn't get a proper connection on his shot and it drifts harmlessly wide.
53min - Everton's first forward advance of the second-half sees Mikel Arteta pick out Leon Osman, but he fires wide.
52min - Scott Parker sets up another Magpies raid, bursting forward in the inside left channel before finding Shola Ameobi. The striker lets the ball roll past him and feeds Charles N'Zogbia, but hsi shot is blocked by Simon Davies.
50min - The first chance after the break falls to Newcastle. Scott Parker and Nolberto Solano combine to provide a shooting chance for Shola Ameobi, but his well-struck effort is blocked by Alan Stubbs.
FIRST-HALF ACTION UPDATES
45min+2 - Debut keeper Sander Westerveld is Everton's saviour in first-half stoppage time. Charles N'Zogbia and Celestine Babayaro combine for the Nigerian to cut inside and pick out Nolberto Solano, and his sidefoot effort from eight yard is brilliantly turned away by the visiting shotstopper. It is the last action of a lively, albeit goalless, first half.
44min - There is a controversial moment as Lee Bowyer races on to Emre's pass on the counter attack and then tumbles with Tim Cahill close behind. The Aussie is already walking a tightrope after his earlier booking, but this time referee Graham Poll angers the home crowd by saying there was no foul.
43min - Newcastle have a dangerous free-kick to defend when Lee Bowyer brings down Mikel Arteta 25 yards out. The Spaniard takes the free-kick himself and Shay Given does well to get his fingertips to it and pushit behind. A right-wing corner from Arteta follows and for the second time in the game, Emre makes a vital goal-line clearance to stop a David Weir header going in.
41min - Shay Given's downfield punt almost falls kindly for Nolberto Solano before Nuno Valente puts the ball out for a corner. Emre's right-wing flag-kick is then headed over by Lee Bowyer.
38min - Tim Cahill gets a deserved yellow card for clipping Charles N'zogbia when he's in full flow. It gives Newcastle a free-kick in a central position 30 yards out. Emre's first effort is straight into the defensive wall and he then volleys the follow-up high into the Gallowgate End.
37min - United's first attack for a while sees Lee Bowyer carry the ball forward, before his 20-yard shot is deflected behind. The midfielder then gets a near-post flick to Nolberto Solano's left-wing corner but the ball flashes wide.
34min - Everton are having a good spell and when Nuno Valente delivers a dangerous cross from the left, Robbie Elliott has to put it behind. Mikel Arteta's corner is headed clear by Shola Ameobi, but the visitors then quickly force another corner. Arteta swings it over from the right and David Weir's header is hacked off the line by Emre.
32min - A great piece of defending by Peter Ramage comes to the Magpies' aid. A free-kick by the Toffees sees the home defence struggle to clear and when James Beattie stands up a cross to the back post from the visitors' right, it looks at though Kevin Kilbane will pounce - only for Ramage to hook the ball clear.
29min - A stray Lee Bowyer backheel puts Newcastle in difficulty and Robbie Elliott gets a lacture - but no yellow card - from Graham Poll when he brings down Leon Osman in trying to rescue the situation.
24min - Alan Stubbs is penalised by Graham Poll for manhandling Shola Ameobi in the inside right position, and United have a free-kick 25 yards out. Emre's effort strikes Simon Davies, and Kevin Kilbane clears the danger.
20min - Newcastle have begun brightly, with some crisp passing and neat possession football. Kevin Kilbane trips Nolberto Solano to concede a free-kick midway inside the Everton half, but Emre's delivery carries all the way through to Sander Westerveld.
15min - James Beattie tries to get an attack going for Everton but is manoeuvred away from goal by Robbie Elliott. When he finally tries a shot from fully 30 yards, it is well wide of Shay Given's goal.
10min - More Newcastle pressure sees Celestine Babayaro send over a looping left-wing cross that is cleared only as far as Lee Bowyer on the edge of the Toffees' box. His shot is deflected behind of Mikel Arteta for a corner that comes to nothing.
9min - A neat Newcastle move sees Peter Ramage play a ball infield to Nolberto Solano, who then picks out Lee Bowyer. The midfielder allows the ball to run past him and moves wide of Alan Stubbs, but his low left foot shot drifts back across Sander Westerveld's goal and out of play for a goal-kick.
8min - Everton midfielder Kevin Kilbane swings over a good cross from the left, but Robbie Elliott is first to it and heads clear.
5min - Emre is on the ball in the inside left position again, this time weaving into the box before slipping a pass into Shola Ameobi. The move breaks down, however, when the striker cannot find a way past Alan Stubbs. At the other end, a well-timed tackle by Celestine Babayaro stops James Beattie breaking into the penalty area from the right.
2min - A lovely exchange of passes between Emre and Shola Ameobi sees the Turk break down the inside left channel. He sweeps in a dangerous low cross, that Ameobi is unable to reach before Nolberto Solano slides it back goalwards beyond the far post, only for Sander Westerveld to claim. In his forward momentum, Ameobi collided with the post and took a painful knock that required treatment.
Everton get the game underway with Newcastle United attacking the Gallowgate End in the first-half.
Alan Shearer was once again missing from the Newcastle team as they took on Everton at St. James' Park on Saturday.
Shearer had missed the two previous games against Southampton and Charlton, and he was unable to shake off a calf problem in time to face David Moyes' side.
That meant Shola Ameobi once again led the line, with Emre expected to play off him. Titus Bramble's hamstring injury saw Celestine Babayaro a quick return to the side after his two-game ban. He slotted in at left back, with Robbie Elliott partnering Jean Alain Boumsong in the heart of the back four.
There was a place on the bench for young midfielder Matty Pattison, a product of the Academy who was given his first taste of senior involvement by caretaker boss Glenn Roeder. Albert Luque, however, did not feature in the 16.
Everton handed a debut to on-loan goalkeeper Sander Westerveld, the former Liverpool stopper who joined them on loan from Portsmouth on thursday after Nigel Martyn, Richard Wright and Iain Turner were all unavailable.
Former Magpies Duncan Ferguson and Allessandro Pistone missed out on a return to St. James' through suspension and injury respectively.
