Gary Oliver reports

ALAN Shearer equalled Jackie Milburn's Newcastle United goalscoring record with a late strike that saw the Magpies edge past FA Cup Third Round opponents Mansfield Town.

Despite 77 places separating the two sides, the Stags gave a tremendous account of themselves at St. James' Park against Premiership opposition.

But just as the League Two outfit were starting to dream of a replay at Field Mill, up stepped Shearer to strike in the 80th minute to equal Milburn's tally of 200 goals in a black and white shirt.

Nolberto Solano's pass was backheeled by Albert Luque into the path of the Geordie skipper and he rifled home at the Gallowgate End to send the home support into raptures.

90min - Two minutes of additional time are added to the game, but they pass without incident.

88min - A late rally from Mansfield sees them win a right-wing corner when Stephen Dawson sees his cross put behind by Lee Clark. Adam Rundle swings over the flag kick, but Alex Baptiste heads over from six yards.

86min - With four minutes remaining, Alan O'Brien gets his first taste of senior action for the Magpies when he replaces Albert Luque.

84min - Mansfield are committed to throwing numbers forward in search of an equaliser, leaving Newcastle able to exploit space. Lee Clark tries to send Alan Shearer clear for a second goal, but Alex Baptiste again cuts out the threat.

80min - NEWCASTLE GOAL: And who else but Alan Shearer as he equals Jackie Milburn's all-time club record of 200 goals in a black and white shirt with a crucial strike! Nolberto Solano plays the ball into Albert Luque, and his clever backheel sees the ball drop for the skipper to dispatch a crisp right-foot finish past Kevin Pressman and the St. James' crowd go wild in their appreciation of the local hero.

79min - The time is ticking away and a large home crowd is getting desperate for a goal. Peter Ramage crosses from the right and the ball is flicked on by Nolberto Solano, but it hits the shins of Charles N'Zogbia six yards from goal and the ball rolls kindly for Kevin Pressman to collect. Mansfield then make a second change when Nathan Arnold replaces Gus Uhlenbeek.

76min - A nervy moment for Newcastle as Adam Rundle gets in behind Peter Ramage. His low cross is cleared by Jean Alain Boumsong and Titus Bramble.

75min - Great reflexes and a slice of luck help Kevin Pressman deny Michael Chopra from close range. Albert Luque's left-wing throw in reaches Charles N'Zogbia, who crosses from the byline where sub Chopra touches the ball goalwards but Pressman keeps the ball out with his body.

72min - Newcastle are awarded a free-kick 25 yards out after Alex Baptiste fouls Michael Chopra. Albert Luque's left-foot effort is well struck but just clears the Gallowgate End crossbar. Before the goal kick is taken, Mansfield make their first change as Adam Birchall replaces Allan Russell.

70min - A vital challenge from Gareth Jelleyman thwarts Alan Shearer just as he lines up a 10-yard effort at the Gallowgate End. The end result is a corner after good work by Lee Clark and Nolberto Solano to set up the chance.

64min - Another change by Graeme Souness as Michael Chopra takes over from Martin Brittain. The reshuffle sees Nolberto Solano switch back to his favoured right-sided role, and Albert Luque taking up a position on the left flank to allow Chopra to partner Alan Shearer in attack.

62min - Another Newcastle corner is recorded when Charles N'Zogbia crosses from the left and Albert Luque sees an effort cleared. The Magpies keep the ball and Jake Buxton is well-positioned to clear a dangerous Alan Shearer cross from the right.

59min - In the middle of a United spell of pressure, Graeme Souness makes a change, sending on Peter Ramage to replace Stephen Carr. From a third corner in a short period, Charles N'Zogbia forces a save from Kevin Pressman at his near post.

57min - More good defensive cover by Alex Baptiste at the expense of another corner, when he cuts out a Stephen Carr centre. The first flag-kick is conceded, but Newcastle force two more in quick succession.

55min - Newcastle force a corner when Martin Brittain's low right-wing cross is turned behind by Alex Baptiste at the near post. Brittain and Nolberto Solano work a short corner that sees the Peruvian cross to the back post where Titus Bramble nods the ball back to Alan Shearer, but his looping header is gathered by Kevin Pressman.

49min - Stephen Carr wastes a good chance to break the deadlock for Newcastle. The right-box gets into the Stags penalty area and when he tries to play a one-two with Albert Luque, the ball drops kindly for him only to volley over at the Gallowgate End from a promising position.

46min - Adam Rundle almost fires Mansfield into the lead immediately after the restart. Gus Uhlenbeek's right-wing cross is cleverly left by Allan Russell for his team-mate, who forces Shay Given to dive low to his right to keep the ball out.

45min - Mansfield finish the half strongly and Adam Rundle wins a corner when his shot is deflected behind by Celestine Babayaro. Gareth Jelleyman then centres from the left where Jake Buxton is just unable to get behind Titus Bramble to reach it at the far post.

44min - There are half-hearted Mansfield appeals for a penalty when Jean Alain Boumsong challenges Richie Barker on the edge of the Magpies' 18-yard box. But referee Andy D'Urso rightly waves away the Stags' protests.

41min - Newcastle are not having it all their own way against the League Two opponents. Charles N'Zogbia rifles in a well-truck effort from 25 yards, but it is always going to clear Kevin Pressman's crossbar at the Leazes End goal.

37min - Alan Shearer is fouled 30 yards from goal by Giles Coke and the skipper picks himself up to deliver a free-kick that crashes into the Mansfield wall and behind for a corner, which is subsequently cleared.

35min - Mansfield are certainly giving as good as they get at St. James' Park, and when Adam Rundle crosses from the left, Celestine Babayaro gets up to head away the danger from Richie Barker. The Stags, however, are quickly back on the attack and it needs Jean Alain Boumsong to cut out a dangerous right-wing centre from Gus Uhlenbeek.

32min - Gus Uhlenbeek is fouled down by the corner flag by Jean Alain Boumsong to award Mansfield a free-kick. Adam Rundle plays it short to Uhlenbeek who cuts inside and sends a curling left-foot effort wide of goal.

29min - Albert Luque is tripped just outside the Mansfield penalty area and Newcastle get a free-kick which Nolberto Solano crosses from the left to the far post for Lee Clark, but his centre travels across the Stags six-yard box without anyone being able to reach it. United quickly get the ball back, however, and when the ball finds its way back to Solano inside the penalty area, his right-foot shot is blocked by Alex Baptiste.

24min - A Stephen Carr effort is deflected behind for a left-wing corner to Newcastle. Nolberto Solano's cross is cleared only as far as Lee Clark lurking on the edge of the box, but his volley drifts high into the Leazes End. Play switches to the other end of the field where Richie Barker sends a shot skidding wide from 20 yards.

20min - Mansfield when their first corner when Gus Uhlenbeek gets behind Celestine Babayaro and fires the ball across goal where Stephen Carr has to turn it behind to prevent Adam Rundle getting in at the far post. From the short corner, Giles Coke evades a challenge from Alan Shearer on the edge of the Magpies' penalty area, but then drills his shot wide.

18min - Mansfield threaten when a good forward run by Adam Rundle sets up a shooting chance for Allan Russell and his right-foot effort from 18 yards is beaten away by Shay Given. The Stags regain possession, but a second shot from Jake Buxton, this time from 25 yards, is well wide of the mark.

15min - A smart turn from Albert Luque frees him from the attentions of two defenders as he runs on to a lofted pass from Nolberto Solano, but his cross from the right intended for Alan Shearer is cut out by Alex Baptiste.

10min  - Newcastle win their first corner when Stephen Dawson puts the ball behind. Nolberto Solano's flag kick from the left is headed back out to the Peruvian by Gareth Jelleyman, and when he centres again, Titus Bramble's attempt to sidefoot the ball goalwards is blocked by Alex Baptiste.

9min - A great Newcastle move starts when Alan Shearer gets up to nod the ball into the path of Albert Luque who then immediately sets Martin Brittain away to his right. From the winger's cross there is a scramble before Luque gets a shot away from eight yards only for Jake Buxton to make a timely block for the League Two outfit.

8min - A lovely pass from Nolberto Solano in the inside left position frees Albert Luque, but the Spaniard can only fire into the side netting from a tight angle when he shoots from 12 yards.

7min - Newcastle register their first attempt on target, but it's a weak 18-yard effort from Charles N'Zogbia which travels harmlessly through to Kevin Pressman.

5min - There is a stern lecture for Richie Barker from referee Andy D'Urso after the striker catches Shay Given late when trying to get on the end of a pass from Stephen Dawson inside the United area.

3min - Adam Rundle sets off on a left-wing run for the Stags but when he crosses to the far post for Richie Barker, the visiting skipper sees the ball skim off the top of his head and behind for a goal kick.

Mansfield Town get the game underway attacking the Gallowgate End.
