TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 2
NEWCASTLE UNITED 0
White Hart Lane
December 31, 2005
Gary Oliver reports
NEWCASTLE United ended 2005 on a miserable note with a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.
The Magpies had looked solid in the opening half, but were undone two minutes before the interval when Teemu Tainio found space drill a low shot past Shay Given.
The lead was extended in the 66th minute when Mido volleyed home a Robbie Keane cross to secure the points for Martin Jol's team.
Spurs skipper Keane saw three efforts ruled out for offside, while Mido also had a second goal chalked off.
Newcastle could not even manage a consolation goal, with Shola Ameobi missing from six yards in the 85th minute when Tottenham keeper Paul Robinson could only parry a Charles N'Zogbia shot into his path.
A bad day for the Magpies was made worse by injuries to Shay Given (thumb), Peter Ramage (achilles) and Michael Owen who fractured a metatarsal in his right foot and faced 10 weeks on the sidelines.
SECOND HALF ACTION UPDATES
89min - Jermaine Jenas is denied a goal against his former club, when Celestine Babayaro turns behind an Edgar Davids cross before the midfielder can pounce at the far post.
86min - Mido is denied a second goal when he slides home a Jermaine Jenas cross from the right, only to be pulled up for offside.
85min - A bad day for Newcastle is summed up by a glaring Shola Ameobi miss. Charles N'Zogbia rifles in a shot from 25 yards that a surprised Paul Robinson can only parry into the path of the Magpies striker, but from six yards, he can only strike the ball down into the ground and over the crossbar.
81min - Edgar Davids tries his luck again, this time with a low left-foot drive from 25 yards that fizzes narrowly wide of goal.
79min - Edgar Davids breaks into the Magpies' penalty area and shoots narrowly wide. The break in play allows Graeme Souness to send on Charles N'Zogbia in place of Nolberto Solano, while Martin Jol replaces his skipper Robbie Keane with Jermain Defoe.
73min - Robbie Elliott plays a free-kick into the Spurs area, but when it is cleared to Scott Parker 20 yards out, he is immediately hassled by Edgar Davids and can only loft his shot high over Paul Robinson's goal.
71min - Mido flicks the ball into the path of strike partner Robbie Keane and Shay Given has to race off his line to punch the ball away from his fellow Irishman.
68min - Spurs boss Martin Jol makes his first change of the game, withdrawing Teemu Tainio and sending on Michael Brown.
66min - TOTTENHAM GOAL: Amady Faye loses possession midway inside his own half to Edgar Davids and though the midfielder gets back to make a timely challenge, the ball is cleared only as far as Robbie Keane, and his cross from the left is met by Mido who volleys the ball into the ground and beyond the despairing dive of Shay Given.
63min - Superb control from Robbie Keane sees him control a high ball on the touchline and then skip away from Robbie Elliott. His cross from the byline is perfect for Mido, but the Egyptian makes a mess of his header and Shay Given collects easily.
61min - Robbie Keane completes his hat-trick of offside goals for the afternoon, straying beyond the Newcastle backline before collecting a Jermaine Jenas pass. Out of nowhere, Newcastle almost conjure up an equaliser when Scott Parker unleashes a powerful drive from 35 yards that Paul Robinson is relieved to see travel inches wide of his left-hand post.
56min - Good goalkeeping from Shay Given sees him scoop the ball away from Teemu Tainio as the home midfielder tries to latch on to a square ball from Robbie Keane.
55min - A Robbie Elliott foul on Lee-Young Pyo gives Spurs a free-kick level with the United area. Michael Carrick's delivery from the left is met by Mido at the far post, but he heads over the bar.
49min - A clever ball by Robbie Keane sees Jermaine Jenas get in behind Jean Alain Boumsong, but he lifts his shot over Shay Given and into the side netting.
47min - Albert Luque's first contribution is to win a corner for United when his shot from the edge of the Spurs penalty area deflects behind off Paul Stalteri. Nolberto Solano's right-wing flag kick is then headed wide by Shola Ameobi.
Half-time sees Albert Luque and Celestine Babayaro warming up on the pitch, and it comes as no surprise when the pair are introduced at the resumption, with both Michael Owen and Peter Ramage unable to continue after picking up knocks during the first-half.
As part of the necessary reshuffle, Robbie Elliott switches to right-back.
FIRST HALF ACTION UPDATES
45min+1 - A forward pass from the left is flicked on by Alan Shearer and Michael Owen is thwarted by the combined efforts of Paul Robinson and Anthony Gardner. Worrying for United, the striker is still feeling the effects of the double challenge as he leaves the pitch at half-time still in the company of physio Paul Ferris.
43min - TOTTENHAM GOAL: A long ball from the right is flicked on by Mido, and when Titus Bramble is unable to clear at full stretch, the ball drops kindly for Teemu Tainio to drill a low shot across Shay Given and into the far corner of the Newcastle net.
40min - Shola Ameobi is involved again, and this time his contribution is a telling one at the other end. Robbie Keane gets free down the left, and his cross looks perfect for Jermaine Jenas to meet with a header - but Ameobi causes enough of a nuisance in the air to prevent his old colleague getting his effort on target.
39min - Robbie Keane has the ball in the United net for the second time, but once again, he is flagged for offside, this time as he runs on to a Michael Carrick pass. United take the game upfield, but Shola Ameobi's 20-yard shot lacks any power and travels through to Paul Robinson.
36min - Good pressing by Shola Ameobi on Paul Stalteri sees Newcastle earn their first corner of the afternoon. Nolberto Solano crosses to the left to deliver the flag-kick, which is eventually cleared by the home defence.
33min - Tottenham's best chance of the half comes when Michael Carrick feeds a pass into TeemuTainio, and he twists and turns Peter Ramage before firing a shot across Shay Given's goal that is beyond the reach of Robbie Keane at the far post.
32min - Alan Shearer is held back on the East Stand touchline 15 yards from the byline as Spurs concede another free-kick. However, Nolberto Solano is unable to get his delivery beyond Michael Carrick, who heads clear.
29min - Amady Faye is fouled by Edgar Davids and Newcastle are awarded a free-kick midway inside the Tottenham half. Nolberto Solano plays the ball into the penalty area, but it travels straight through to Paul Robinson.
24min - With Scott Parker again performing superbly in midfield, and Jean Alain Boumsong and Titus Bramble making a solid start at the back, Spurs are struggling to open up the Magpies. Lee-Young Pyo whips in a cross from the left, but United are happy to watch it drift across Shay Given's goal and out of play.
16min - Spurs win the first corner of the game, which is taken by Michael Carrick on the left. He plays it short to Lee-Young Pyo and his drive is deflected behind off Alan Shearer for a second corner, which comes to nothing.
11min - A long crossfield pass from Michael Dawson sees Peter Ramage deceived by the flight, allowing Teemu Tainio to steal in behind him. The Newcastle right-back immediately tugs back his opponent and is shown the first yellow card of the afternoon by referee Howard Webb. The free-kick is cleared by the Magpies before the ball is retrieved by Spurs and Edgar Davids shoots high and wide from 20 yards.
8min - Lee-Young Pyo plays a forward pass to Robbie Keane who races forward and flicks the ball past fellow Irishman Shay Given and into the net - but his celebrations are cut short as he is flagged for offside.
7min - Anthony Gardner catches Alan Shearer late and United are awarded a free-kick 10 yards inside the Spurs half. Peter Ramage chips the ball into the penalty area, where Michael Dawson clears, and when the home side try to launch a counter-attack, Jean Alain Boumsong cuts out the danger from Edgar Davids.
3min - Spurs launch their first attack of the game. Paul Robinson's downfield punt is flicked on by Mido, but when Teemu Tainio tries a volley from 20 yards out he sends the ball sailing high into the Park Lane end.
2min - The first real attack of the game sees Scott Parker burst forward from midfield, past Anthony Gardner and into the Spurs penalty area, but he can only steer an angled shot well wide of the home goal.
Tottenham kicked off the game, with Newcastle - wearing their green change kit - attacking the Paxton Road end of the stadium.
GRAEME Souness named the same starting line-up as he had for the postponed game against Charlton Athletic as Newcastle United ended 2005 with a trip to White Hart Lane to face Tottenham Hotspur.
The only change to the 16 meant to face the Addicks was among the substitutes. With Lee Bowyer beginning a three-game ban, his place on the bench was taken by Charles N'Zogbia.
Spurs, aiming to bounce back from a 2-0 defeat at West Bromwich Albion, included former Magpie Jermaine Jenas in their ranks.
