Alan Shearer in action against Wigan

Gary Oliver reports

NEWCASTLE United's Carling Cup quest came to an end when they suffered another 1-0 defeat at Wigan Athletic.

With extra-time looming, referee Steve Bennett penalised Robbie Elliott for shirt-pulling on Latics substitute Jason Roberts, and David Connolly coolly dispatched an 87th minute penalty past Shay Given.

The closest the Magpies came to scoring was through a second-half shot by Emre that Mike Pollitt touched on to his post.

But on a bad night for Newcastle, their injury list lengthened further when the Turkish midfielder limped off in the 71st minute.

The visitors tried to rally at the death, but Wigan enjoyed a repeat of their 1-0 Premiership victory at the JJB Stadium back in October.

88min - United come agonisingly close to levelling as Michael Chopra's low curler from the left is parried by Mike Pollitt and both Alan Shearer and Nobby Solano are just unable to reach the loose ball. Newcastle launch another attack seconds later, and Solano fires just wide of goal.

87min - WIGAN GOAL: The Latics are awarded a penalty as referee Steve Bennett penalises Robbie Elliott for holding the shirt of Jason Roberts. David Connolly steps up and sends Shay Given the wrong way.

83min - Shay Given races out of his area to head clear from the onrushing Jason Roberts, and is fouled by the striker in the process.

80min - Jason Roberts wins a free-kick on Wigan's right and quickly plays the ball up the touchline to free Lee McCulloch, but his low centre travels across the Newcastle penalty area unconverted. Amady Faye then concedes a free-kick 30 yards from goal and Ryan Taylor's effort strikes the defensive wall and goes behind for a corner.

78min - Jason Roberts is denied by the woodwork as he rises to meet a Ryan Taylor cross and sees his far post header crash against the crossbar. The ball breaks to Gary Teale, but his goalbound effort is superbly blocked by the sliding challenge of Peter Ramage.

73min - Leighton Baines crosses deep from Wigan's left and the ball is laid back to David Connolly on the edge of the United area, only for the home striker to fire over Shay Given's crossbar.

71min - Bad news for the Magpies as Emre pulls up on the left-hand touchline and waves to the bench that he is unable to continue. He is helped down the tunnel by physio Paul Ferris, and Amady Faye is sent on to replace the Turk.

70min - Gary Teale gets ahead of Charles N'Zogbia for Wigan and hammers a right-foot shot across goal that no one can reach.

69min - Wigan make their second change of the night, taking off Andreas Johansson and sending on Jason Roberts.

66min - Another corner for United, this time as Leighton Baines cuts out a Martin Brittain cross from the right. Emre's delivery travels across goal and his retrieved by Nolberto Solano on the left. The ball eventually moves back across field to Emre, and when he cuts inside and unleashes a low left-foot shot, Mike Pollitt dives to his left and touches the ball on to the base of his near post before it bounces away to safety.

64min - Martin Brittain releases Alan Shearer down the Magpies' right and the captain wins a corner off Leighton Baines. A short corner is worked between Brittain and Nobby Solano before Shearer picks up the ball and fires high into the crowd from 20 yards.

60min - Wigan force a corner when Peter Ramage heads a Ryan Taylor centre behind. United only half clear their lines and Josip Skoko fires narrowly wide from the edge of the area.

58min - Wigan pick up their first booking when Josip Skoko is cautioned for a foul on Scott Parker. When play resumes Newcastle force a corner, when a long diagonal ball from Jean Alain Boumsong aimed at Alan Shearer is headed behind by Ryan Taylor

57min - Emre is convinced he should be awarded a free-kick after a challenge by Josip Skoko, and his protests to referee Steve Bennett earn the Turk a yellow card. At the same time, Graeme Souness makes a second change, sending on Michael Chopra and withdrawing Albert Luque.

55min - Newcastle win a free-kick 30 yards out when Stephane Henchoz fouls Albert Luque. Nolberto Solano crosses to the far post where Alan Shearer heads back across goal, but no one in a green shirt can reach the inviting knockdown.

51min - A brighter start by Newcastle as they again reach the edge of the Wigan penalty area through Charles N'Zogbia, who latches on to Albert Luque's flick. Unfortunately, his cross is easily cut out by the home defence.

48min - Newcastle are first to show after the restart, when Peter Ramage's deep free-kick from halfway is cleared to Scott Parker on the edge of the Latics penalty area and the midfielder sends his shot narrowly wide.

Both sides make substitutions at half time. Martin Brittain replaces Lee Bowyer for Newcastle, while Leighton Baines comes on for Steve McMillan as Wigan's change.

45min+2 - The first half comes to an end with Wigan massing ranks around the United 18-yard area, but Ryan Taylor firing over from the angle of the box.

44min - Robbie Elliott produces another timely block for Newcastle, this time getting in the way of a strike from Ryan Taylor as the Latics full-back bursts into the penalty area.

43min - Another sharp turn and shot from Lee McCulloch on the edge of the Magpies' penalty area, but the ball runs harmlessly through to Shay Given.

41min - United look to take the game to Wigan, but Charles N'Zogbia balloons an ambitious shot into the stands from 30 yards.

37min - Shay Given has the massed ranks of Newcastle fans singing his name for a brilliant piece of goalkeeping. Albert Luque loses possession to Josip Skoko who feeds Lee McCulloch. His low 25-yard drive is parried by the United keeper, but with David Connolly looking certain to net the rebound from close range, the Magpies' ace pulls off a brilliant block.

36min - Newcastle have Robbie Elliott to thank for keeping the score goalless when he hacks clear a Matt Jackson header on his line at the far post as Alan Mahon's corners continue to cause problems.

35min - Wigan's corner count moves into double fingers when Shay Given pulls off a smart fingertip save at his near post to keep out an effort from Lee McCulloch.

34min - Neat build-up play between Ryan Taylor and Gary Teale creates a shooting chance for Alan Mahon from 20 yards, but he cannot keep his strike down and it sails over goal.

30min - Newcastle lift the pressure on them when Charles N'Zogbia breaks upfield. However, his low cross is beyond Albert Luque at the near post and Mike Pollitt gathers low. Wigan are forced into their first substitution, when centre-back Emerson Thome is unable to carry on after picking up an earlier knock, and Stephane Henchoz takes over.

26min - More great defending from Peter Ramage as he gets himself between the goal and Lee McCulloch to head clear another cross from Gary Teale. Wigan are pressing hard to break the deadlock and have forced no fewer than nine corners so far.

24min - Andreas Johansson wastes a great chance to put Wigan ahead when he is picked out superbly by Ryan Taylor's right-wing cross. However, from six yards he guides his effort straight at Shay Given. A minute later, Robbie Elliott makes a timely clearance to deal with a Gary Teale cross.

22min - Charles N'Zogbia concedes another right-wing corner, heading behind a long throw from Ryan Taylor. Alan Mahon's flag-kick delivery is again awkward for Shay Given and his defenders, but the ball is cleared after a brief scare.

20min - Charles N'Zogbia has to backtrack quickly to prevent Gary Teale getting in behind him in the inside right channel for Wigan, conceding another corner.

16min - Shay Given has to fling himself to his right to pull off a smart save from Lee McCulloch, who turns and shoots from 25 yards. McCulloch then turns provider a minute later to tee up David Connolly, who sees his close-range effort saved by the legs of the Newcastle keeper. However, a raised flag for offside against the Wigan striker means it would not have counted anyway.

15min - Charles N'Zogbia gets to the byline on the left, but his low centre is cleared. United retain possession and the ball finds its way back to the young Frenchman, but no one is able to get on the end of his second cross.

11min - Wigan force the first corner of the game, but only after great defensive work from Peter Ramage as he wins a crucial back post header from Andreas Johansson, as the Latics player tries to get on the end of a great right-wing cross from Gary Teale.

8min - Newcastle move into Wigan's half and the ball finds its way to Peter Ramage on the right flank. The full-back swings over a tantalising cross that narrowly eludes Albert Luque.

5min - Newcastle show their first threat on a counter-attack when Nolberto Solano feeds a super pass into Albert Luque. However, the Spaniard fails in his attempts to find a way past covering defenders Matt Jackson and Steve McMillan and the chance goes.

4min - Wigan win a free-kick just inside the Newcastle half. Ryan Taylor delivers deep into the penalty area from the Latics' left, but the ball travels straight through to Shay Given.

1min - Wigan launch the game's first serious attack when Alan Mahon plays the ball out to David Connolly on the left flank. His low centre was met at the near post by Lee McCulloch but, under pressure from Robbie Elliott, he stabbed it wide from six yards.

Newcastle, wearing their green change kit, got the game underway defending the North Stand, where the travelling Toon Army were housed.

ALBERT Luque started his first game for Newcastle United since mid-September when he lined up alongside Alan Shearer in the Magpies' attack for the Carling Cup Fourth Round encounter with Wigan Athletic at the JJB Stadium.

The Spaniard made his comeback as a substitute in Sunday's Premiership defeat at Everton, ending a nine-game absence with a hamstring injury, and began from the kick-off against the Latics as Shola Ameobi was sidelined with a dead leg.

With Titus Bramble and Celestine Babayaro missing, manager Graeme Souness drafted in Robbie Elliott at centre-back, while Charles N'Zogbia continued to operate as a makeshift left-back as he did for much of the second half at Goodison Park.

Despite a place in the last eight of the Carling Cup being on offer, Wigan boss Paul Jewell made no less than nine changes to his starting line-up, with goalkeeper Mike Pollitt and midfielder Lee McCulloch the only two who started Saturday's 2-1 home loss at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur.
