FULL-TIME REPORT

NEWCASTLE United slipped to a second successive Premiership defeat on their travels after going down 1-0 at struggling Everton.

The only goal came a minute into the second half, when Toffees centre-back Joseph Yobo rose to head in a Mikel Arteta right-wing corner.

However, the Magpies left Goodison Park fuming after they were denied what looked a certain penalty five minutes before the break when James McFadden stuck out a hand to deflect a Shola Ameobi strike away from goal.

Alan Shearer twice came close in the opening period, only to be denied by Nigel Martyn and James Beattie, but Yobo's goal ultimately proved to be the difference between the two sides.

SECOND-HALF ACTION UPDATES

90min+1 - Shay Given makes three fantastic reaction saves in quick succession to deny firstly James McFadden and then Tim Cahill twice.

90min - Shay Given beats away a fierce drive by James McFadden for a corner as Everton try to close the game out.

89min - Charles N'Zogbia tries a shot after cutting inside from the left, but it drifts over the home crossbar.

86min - Lee Bowyer plays a ball down the inside right channel for Albert Luque, but after advancing into the penalty area, the Spaniard can only find the side netting with his shot.

85min - Everton make their final switch when James Beattie is replaced by Marcus Bent.

84min - Newcastle get the chance to mount an attack when Simon Davies brings down Lee Bowyer, but when Albert Luque blasts the free kick high into the stands from 30 yards, there are mocking cheers from the home fans.

80min - Everton make another change with Mikel Arteta coming off and Leon Osman entering the action. When play resumes, Peter Ramage becomes the fifth Magpie to have his name taken in the match for bringing down Kevin Kilbane.

79min - James Beattie blows a golden chance to put the game out of Newcastle's reach. United lose possession midway inside their own half and when Simon Davies tees up the striker with just Shay Given to beat from 12 yards, he blazes high into the stands.

76min - Everton make their first change when Andy van der Meyde is withdrawn and is replaced by Kevin Kilbane.

68min - Albert Luque leads a counter attack for Newcastle that is ended when he is fouled by James Beattie 25 yards from goal. The Everton striker is shown a yellow card for the challenge. Emre takes the free-kick which is headed clear by Joseph Yobo, and when Charles N'Zogbia collects the loose ball and jinks in from the left, he sets up a chance for Scott Parker who sidefoots disappointingly wide.

64min - Scott Parker becomes the fourth Newcastle player to go into the book when referee Howard Webb determines he has caught Mikel Arteta on the Toffees' right flank. The Spaniards dead ball kick is again menacing, but the Magpies clear their lines eventually.

63min - Shay Given races outside his area to head clear a loose ball before James Beattie can reach it, and gets a painful, though accidental, kick from the home striker in the process.

60min - Newcastle make a second substitution on the hour mark, with Nolberto Solano making way for Lee Bowyer.

59min - Shay Given makes a comfortable save from Mikel Arteta's half-volley from 15 yards.

57min - Play is held up while Scott Parker receives treatment after being accidentally kicked on the back of the head by Jean Alain Boumsong.

56min - Everton have grown in confidence after taking the lead and force another corner through Tony Hibbert. Mikel Arteta's right-wing delivery again causes problems, but when Joseph Yobo retrieves the ball and crosses from the left James Beattie heads over.

51min - Celestine Babayaro limps off and is replaced by Albert Luque. In the necessary tactical reshuffle that follows, Charles N'Zogbia takes over at left back.

50min - Tony Hibbert overlaps down the Everton right and swings over a decent cross that glances off both Titus Bramble and Peter Ramage before finding its way to Andy van der Meyde who in turn volleys well wide.

46min - EVERTON GOAL: Within a minute of the restart, the Magpies fall behind. Shay Given starts the second half how he finished the first, making a smart save, this time from James McFadden. However from Mikel Arteta's resulting corner, he is powerless to prevent Everton taking the lead, as Joseph Yobo climbs above Peter Ramage to net with a well-timed header.

FIRST-HALF ACTION UPDATES

45min - Newcastle are indebted to goalkeeper Shay Given for keeping the score goalless in first-half stoppage time, as he flings himself to his left to keep out Andy van der Meyde's shot, after the Dutchman was played in by Tim Cahill.

43min - The Magpies are still aggrieved about the non-award of the penalty when they have further reason to be frustrated as referee Howard Webb produces his yellow card for a third time, this time to Titus Bramble for a trip on James McFadden. From the resulting free-kick, delivered by Mikel Arteta, the United centre-back heads on to the roof of his own net. But before the resulting corner can be taken, the official speaks to both Celestine Babayaro and Tim Cahill following an off-the-ball incident.

40min - The Everton keeper is again called into action again to palm away a Peter Ramage cross for a corner. When Emre delivers, it drops to Shola Ameobi who cracks in a right-foot drive that James McFadden appears to stop with his hand on the post. No penalty is given to the striker's fury, and from Nolberto Solano's second flag kick, Emre heads into the path of Alan Shearer and his low strike is hacked clear by the legs of Nigel Martyn.

39min - Joseph Yobo and David Weir get into a real tangle when trying to clear on the edge of their area. Shola Ameobi tries to capitalise on a breakdown in communications in the home defence, but his low shot from 18 yards is saved by Nigel Martyn.

35min - Charles N'Zogbia goes into the book after referee Howard Webb rules he has brought down Mikel Arteta. The Spaniard swings over the free-kick from the right and the Toffees force a couple of corners as United try to clear their lines.

33min - A real scare for Newcastle as Phil Neville delivers a deep free-kick from the Everton left and Mikel Arteta reaches the ball ahead of Celestine Babayaro, only to volley narrowly wide of the visiting net.

30min - The Magpies keep possession around the Everton box and Titus Bramble sends Alan Shearer clear with a great pass. Nigel Martyn does his best to hold up the Geordie captain, and when he finally works space for a shot, it is cleared on the line by a retreating James Beattie. From the resulting corner, Peter Ramage heads wide.

29min - Newcastle come close to scoring again when Shola Ameobi heads Emre's left-wing corner into the path of Titus Bramble and his attempts to squeeze the ball home from close range are thwarted by Tony Hibbert.

28min - Charles N'Zogbia collects a pass from Alan Shearer and fires in a low left-foot drive that Nigel Martyn gathers.

27min - More good defensive work from Peter Ramage at right-back as he heads behind a threatening cross from James McFadden for a corner that is cleared.

26min - Newcastle continue to enjoy possession and when Peter Ramage picks out Shola Ameobi with a clever pass down the inside right channel, he is brought down by David Weir on the corner of the Everton box. Nolberto Solano tries his luck with the resulting free-kick, but his curling effort is too high to trouble Nigel Martyn.

24min - David Weir fouls Alan Shearer to give the Magpies a free-kick midway inside the Toffees' half. Nolberto Solano's delivery is headed behind and United enjoy a little spell of pressure with two corners in quick succession.

22min - James McFadden picks up possession on Everton's right and swings over a deep cross that Peter Ramage wins in the air ahead of Tim Cahill.

21min - Newcastle create the best chance of the half so far, when Nolberto Solano finds Shola Ameobi with a superbly-weighted pass that springs the Everton offside trap. The United striker cuts inside a challenge from Tony Hibbert, but then shoots weakly at Nigel Martyn.

20min - Tim Cahill tries to get Everton going with a run from inside his own half, but he goes down under a challenge from Celestine Babayaro on halfway, and referee Howard Webb produces the first yellow card of the afternoonfor the Nigerian.

16min - Scott Parker concedes another corner on the opposite side after a tackle on Mikel Arteta. The home midfielder delivers the flag kick to the near post where Alan Shearer heads clear for the Magpies.

14min - Everton win another free-kick, this time on the left flank after Scott Parker brings down Tim Cahill. Andy van der Meyde's cross is sliced behind by Alan Shearer, but Newcastle have little problem clearing the subsequent corner from the Blues' Dutch international.

10min - Scott Parker and Nolberto Solano combine to lay the ball off to Alan Shearer on the edge of the Everton box, but his shot is quickly blocked by Simon Davies.

9min - Jean Alain Boumsong again comes off second best in a duel with James Beattie, conceding a dangerous free-kick on the edge of the United box. James McFadden takes the set piece from Everton's right, but his low curler is pushed away by Shay Given and Boumsong completes the clearance before any blue shirt can pounce on the loose ball.

8min - James Beattie's smart turn on halfway leaves Jean Alain Boumsong trailing in his wake and the Everton striker launches a dangerous break. Thankfully for Newcastle, his low centre aimed at James McFadden is cut out by a sliding Peter Ramage.

5min - Titus Bramble concedes a free-kick 10 yards inside his own half, which is hoisted into the Magpies' penalty area by Phil Neville. James Beattie rises highest, but his header lacks both power and accuracy and drifts out of play for a goal kick.

3min - Newcastle win a free-kick on the right after Shola Ameobi is crudely brought down by Phil Neville. Nolberto Solano centres towards the far post looking for Alan Shearer, but Nigel Martyn makes the catch.

2min - Everton launch a raid down their right flank, but Tim Cahill's low cross drifts harmlessly into the arms of Shay Given.

Before the game kicks off, both sets of players and supporters participate in a minute of loud and warm applause as a mark of respect for the late George Best, who died on Friday.
