FULL TIME REPORT

NEWCASTLE United saw their four-game winning run come to an end with a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Premiership champions Chelsea.

The Magpies paid the price for five minutes of madness at the start of the second half, when Jose Mourinho's side struck through Joe Cole and Hernan Crespo.

Having matched Chelsea in a tight opening period, Titus Bramble's misplaced pass that fell to Eidur Gudjohnsen in the 47th minute proved costly as the Icelandic star sent Joe Cole racing clear to break the deadlock.

That lead was doubled four minutes later when Crespo received a pass from Frank Lampard and cut inside the challenge of Bramble to fire past Shay Given.

Newcastle felt they should have had a first-half penalty when Lee Bowyer went down under the challenge of John Terry, but the closest the Magpies - who were without groin injury victim Michael Owen - came to reducing the arrears was when Charles N'Zogbia forced a brilliant save from Petr Cech seven minutes from time.

Chelsea, however, had the final say when Damien Duff's 90th minute shot deflected off former Blue Scott Parker and looped over Given.

It completed another miserable trip to Stamford Bridge for the Magpies, who haven't won on this ground since November 1986.

SECOND HALF ACTION UPDATES

90min - CHELSEA GOAL: The Blues have the final saw when Damien Duff cuts inside from the left and his shot is deflected off former team-mate Scott Parker and loops over a stranded Shay Given. There is barely time to recommence when referee Mark Halsey blows for full time to complete another miserable trip to Stamford Bridge for Newcastle.

87min - Charles N'Zogbia makes a forward break after good work by Shola Ameobi and Michael Chopra, but his final effort at goal is straight at Petr Cech.

83min - Charles N'Zogbia is desperately unlucky not to reduce the arrears for Newcastle when he slips past challenges from Michael Essien and John Terry and unleashes a superb 20-yard strike that Petr Cech flings himself at to tip over the bar for a corner.

81min - Joe Cole sends a low 25-yarder fizzing wide of Shay Given's goal.

80min - Shaun Wright-Phillips comes on for Chelsea as goalscorer Hernan Crespo departs the field.

74min - Titus Bramble makes a sliding interception to clear a dangerous Damien Duff centre from the left. The ball breaks for Michael Essien to try a shot from 25 yards, but he is unable to hit the target.

71min - Emre plays in Shola Ameobi but his low cross is cleared by Michael Essien. Newcastle regain possession and Celestine Babayaro has a shot deflected behind for a corner that is cleared by William Gallas for the hosts.

70min - Graeme Souness withdraws Nolberto Solano and sends on Michael Chopra.

69min - Petr Cech gathers a right-wing cross from Peter Ramage. Chelsea immediately break upfield and Joe Cole picks out Eidur Gudjohnsen to his left, but the striker fires wide.

68min - Emre has a shot charged down from the edge of the area. The loose ball breaks to Charles N'Zogbia but Petr Cech gets down to gather his low effort.

60min - Damien Duff breaks down the left for Chelsea and gets to the byline before picking out Asier Del Horno, whose attempted shot is blocked. When play is stopped, William Gallas replaces Glen Johnson as the hosts make their second substitution of the afternoon.

55min - Chelsea are well and truly in control after that quickfire double strike and Frank Lampard tries his luck with another long-range effort that drifts wide.

51min - CHELSEA GOAL: The Blues double their lead as Frank Lampard advances deep into Newcastle territory and feeds the ball to Hernan Crespo on his left before the Argentine striker cuts inside Titus Bramble and scoops a rising shot past Shay Given.

47min - CHELSEA GOAL: Titus Bramble gifts possession to Eidur Gudjohnsen on halfway and he sends Joe Cole racing clear to fire a right-foot shot across Shay Given and into the back of the Magpies net.

46min - Newcastle are first to get into their stride after the break. Charles N'Zogbia picks up possession on the left flank and his low cross is turned behind for a corner by Ricardo Carvalho. Emre's flag-kick is cleared by Asier Del Horno.

FIRST HALF ACTION UPDATES

Half-time comes with the scoreline still goalless. Newcastle can be satisfied with their first-half performance having battled hard to limit Chelsea's chances.

45min - Two minutes of additional time are to be played as a result of the earlier stoppage when Claude Makelele was injured.

43min - Nolberto Solano becomes the first United player to pick up a booking as he brings down Joe Cole just inside the Newcastle half.

41min - Newcastle break upfield and enjoy a little spell of pressure around the Chelsea area, but it comes to an end when Shola Ameobi's cross from the byline on the left flank drifts behind Petr Cech's goal.

40min - Joe Cole picks up possession on Chelsea's right flank, and his shot from the edge of the area is deflected behind for a corner off Charles N'Zogbia. Damien Duff takes the right-sided corner, which Asier Del Horno meets with a glancing header but sends it wide across the face of goal.

38min - Shay Given comes off his line to punch clear a cross that has deflected off the head of Jean Alain Boumsong. Michael Essien picks up the loose ball, but the Chelsea substitute fires high and wide from 20 yards out.

35min - Chelsea have the ball in the net through Hernan Crespo but the goal is correctly ruled out for offside. The assistant's flag immediately goes up as soon as Damien Duff latches on to a deflected Frank Lampard shot, so when he squares the ball for his Argentinian team-mate to net, the cheers of the home crowd are quickly stifled.

34min - Chelsea break down the right through Hernan Crespo, but his low centre is gathered by Shay Given.

32min - John Terry becomes the first player to go into Mark Halsey's notebook when he is shown the yellow card for deliberately blocking off a run by Shola Ameobi. Emre's subsequent free-kick is cleared by the Blues.

29min - Despite enjoying a lot of possession, Chelsea are unable to force Shay Given into making saves. Frank Lampard tries his luck from 25 yards, but drags his low effort well wide.

28min - Another corner for Chelsea as Scott Parker flings himself at a Damien Duff cross. Celestine Babayaro heads the corner away from the United goal and Jean Alain Boumsong completes the clearance.

26min - Chelsea win their first corner as Nolberto Solano charges down an attempted cross from Asier Del Horno. Frank Lampard swings the ball into the near post from the left, but Shola Ameobi and then Solano get the ball away.

24min - A controversial moment as referee Mark Halsey penalises Celestine Babayaro for handball and awards Chelsea a free-kick in a dangerous area - despite appearing unsighted for the incident. Damien Duff takes the dead ball kick, but Scott Parker meets it first and clears downfield.

23min - Nolberto Solano produces a beautiful pass with the outside of his right foot aimed at freeing Shola Ameobi, but England defender and Chelsea skipper John Terry cuts out the danger.

21min - Newcastle win their second corner of the game. Nolberto Solano's right-wing delivery is headed back goalwards by Peter Ramage, but when the ball falls to Titus Bramble, his shot is blocked by Ricardo Carvalho.

18min - The best chance of the game yet comes Chelsea's way as Damien Duff delivers an inswinging free-kick from the right flank that picks out Ricardo Carvalho unmarked in the United penalty area, but the Portuguese international heads well wide of target.

15min - A lovely flick by Hernan Crespo releases Eidur Gudjohnsen on a forward run for Chelsea, but Peter Ramage stays alert to the danger and makes a sliding interception to cut out the Icelandic international's attempted ball to Joe Cole.

14min - Despite returning to the field after his collision with Scott Parker, it's clear Claude Makelele is struggling and it comes as no surprise when he is forced to limp off. Michael Essien is his replacement.

10min - Play restarts with a Newcastle free-kick, which is floated into the Chelsea penalty area by Emre. Lee Bowyer and Shola Ameobi both try to fashion shooting chances, and when the ball finally finds its way to Nolberto Solano, United win a corner as Asier Del Horno intercepts. The resulting right-wing flag kick from Solano, however, is headed clear by Glen Johnson.

7min - Scott Parker and Claude Makelele collide accidentally in the centre circle, and it's the Chelsea midfielder who comes off worse, requiring treatment as play is held up.

5min - Peter Ramage feeds Lee Bowyer in the Chelsea box and the midfielder goes down after a sliding challenge from John Terry, but referee Mark Halsey waves away Magpie appeals for a penalty after consulting with his assistant.

4min - More indecisive defending almost causes Newcastle problems, as Jean Alain Boumsong's hesitancy almost lets in Frank Lampard on the edge of the visitors' penalty area, but the Frenchman and Celestine Babayaro combine to clear the threat.

17secs - Shay Given is called into immediate action, racing from his line to clear an underhit backpass from Titus Bramble before Hernan Crespo could reach it.

TEAM NEWS

MICHAEL Owen was missing from the Newcastle United side that faced champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge as the club record signing nursed a sore groin.

Rather than risk the club record signing, boss Graeme Souness left the former Liverpool and Real Madrid man out of the squad as a precaution, as the Magpies went in search of a fifth straight win.

Lee Bowyer returned to the United starting line-up for the first time since suffering a knee injury at Wigan Athletic last month, while there were milestones for Shay Given and Celestine Babayaro.

Goalkeeper Given was making his 350th appearance for Newcastle, while left-back Babayaro recorded his 150th Premiership appearance as he returned to Chelsea for the first time since his departure back in January.

United were captained by Jean Alain Boumsong in the absence of regular skipper Alan Shearer, who is recovering from a hernia operation.

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard equalled David James' record of 159 consecutive Premiership appearances, as the Blues looked to avoid losing back-to-back league games for the first time since March 2003.
