EMRE was the match-winner after a rip-roaring Tyne/Wear derby at St. James' Park on Sunday.

Shola Ameobi twice fired United in front, but Liam Lawrence and Stephen Elliott quickly replied for the visitors.

But United's Turkish star bagged the points with a superb free kick at the Gallowgate End just after the hour.

5m Boumsong's foul on Gray gave the visitors a free kick 30 yards out. Whitehead stepped up to take the set piece, but his effort went high and wide.

1m With 38 seconds on the clock, Whitehead went into the book for a late lunge on Emre that left the midfielder in need of treatment.

UNITED got the game underway attacking the Leazes End, and as expected the atmosphere was electric.


Peter Ramage was handed his first start of the season, lining up at left back with Robbie Elliott left out.

Michael Owen failed to shake off a hamstring injury, so Shola Ameobi partnered Alan Shearer in attack, while Nobby Solano was included for the first time after recovering from an injury picked up shortly after his return from Aston Villa.

Tony Caig was named as United's substitute goalkeeper after Steve Harper injured a hamstring in training in midweek.

Sunderland's main injury concern before the game was Julio Arca, and he had to be content with a place on the bench.
