UNITED got the game underway attacking the Leazes End, and as expected the atmosphere was electric.

Peter Ramage was handed his first start of the season, lining up at left back with Robbie Elliott left out.

Michael Owen failed to shake off a hamstring injury, so Shola Ameobi partnered Alan Shearer in attack, while Nobby Solano was included for the first time after recovering from an injury picked up shortly after his return from Aston Villa.

Tony Caig was named as United's substitute goalkeeper after Steve Harper injured a hamstring in training in midweek.

Sunderland's main injury concern before the game was Julio Arca, and he had to be content with a place on the bench.
