Manager Graeme Souness had to ring the changes for the trip to White Hart Lane with Taylor, Bowyer and Dyer all suspended following their respective dismissals against Villa last weekend. In came Harper, Boumsong, Butt and Babayaro. Given was not included after suffering a hip injury against Sporting Lisbon whilst Aaron Hughes dropped to the bench with a slight groin strain.
Spurs first real attack came after just two minutes when Babayaro's header fell to the feet of Brown on the edge of the box but the midfielder's effort was hit straight at Harper in the United goal for a comfortable save.
Spurs were on the attack again two minutes later when Harper missed kicked Butt's back pace slicing the ball out for a corner. The resulting corner was met by Gardner but his header was easily collected by the United keeper.
Brown entered Bennett's notebook on 13 minutes for a foul on Butt. Moments later United won a corner when a through ball by Jenas was met by Ameobi, but King covered well to conceed the corner. Robert's left footed corner was blocked at the near post and the danger was cleared.
Amdy Faye was the first United player to enter Steve Bennett's book for stopping Brown taking an early free kick. United were further penilised as Bennett moved the free kick a further ten yards forward. Then Andy Reid hit a 25 yard shot well wide of Harper in the Newcastle goal.
On 22 minutes Carrick's inventive pass put Defoe through on goal but Harper who had a busy 25 minutes was alive to clear the danger.
Butt and Robet played a neat one two before setting up Jenas whose deep cross into the box was headed into the ground by Ameobi but landed onto the roof of Paul Robinson's net.
On the half hour Gardner met a Ledley King free kick but his powerful header went wide of the targer. Kanoute then glanced a header wide of the target from an Edman left wing cross.
Spurs took the lead on 41 minutes. Haper's clearance from a Babayaro back pass was blocked by Simon Davies. The ball fell kindly to Defoe who made no mistake stabbing the ball into an empty net from 6 yards out.
With two minutes of stoppage time added to the first half there were no more chances and Spurs took a 1-0 lead into the break.
James Milner replaced Alan Shearer at the interval after the United number 9 felt the effects of a heavy challenge earlier in the first half. There was a scare for United five minutes after the break when a long ball by Robinson fell to O'Brien but Defoe stole the ball off his feet but Boumsong was on hand to make a great challenge and prevent a shooting opportunity.
United had a golden opportunity on 58 minutes when a mix up between Paul Robinson and Ledley King saw the ball fall at the feet of James Milner but his cheeky chip over the top of the advancing Robinson went just wide of the post.
Graeme Souness made a double substitution just after the hour mark when Ambrose and N'Zogbia replaced Butt and Robert. Steve Harper did well on 65 minutes when he did enough to nick the ball off the feet of Simon Davies who was through on goal.
After a good attack on 75 minutes United had to immediately go on the defensive when a long ball upfield by Robinson found Defoe on the edge of the area with only Stephen Carr to beat. The Spurs striker did well to lay the ball into the path of Kanoute but what looked like a certain score ended with Kanoute putting his shot well wide.
The introduction of Robbie Keane saw the home side continue to press with a couple of chances from both Keane himself and Kanoute. With 85 minutes gone Jermaine Jenas was brought down on the edge of the 'D' by Sean Davis. Ambrose stepped up to take the free kick but his shot was blocked as was the follow up by Jermaine Jenas.
As full time approached N'Zogbia won a free kick 25 yards out. Once again it was Ambrose who took the kick but again it was blocked by the wall. Spurs had a free kick in injury time when Keane was brought down by N'Zogbia but Kanoute's kick summed up his afternoon. United couldn't make the pressure they had in the final few minutes tell and the match finished with the home side taking all three points.
