JEAN Alain Boumsong returned to the starting line up for the visit of Tottenham in the FA Cup sixth round after being cup-tied for the midweek UEFA Cup win in Athens.

He replaced Andy O'Brien who dropped out of the squad before the match with a back strain, while Lee Bowyer was recalled at the expense of Nicky Butt in the centre of midfield.

There was a great atmosphere inside the stadium as the game got underway with the visitors attacking the Leazes End, with Spurs having sold more than 5,000 tickets in their section and the rest of St. James' Park packed to the rafters with black and white shirts.

Dyer won a corner off King inside the first two minutes after a surging run down the right, but Robert scuffed the kick. The ball was eventually swung back into the danger area and Naybet had to poke the ball out for a flag kick on the opposite side and this time Boumsong and Kluivert clashed heads going for the same ball.

On five minutes United took the lead, with Shearer winning the ball off Atouba before squaring into the path of Kluivert who had a simple tap-in.

Atouba was having a nightmare start to the game, and he was shown a yellow card on nine minutes for pulling down Dyer after being outpaced by the United midfielder. The free kick was just outside the box on the right hand side near the byeline, but when Robert clipped the ball in the Spurs defence cleared.

Atouba then fouled Dyer again just a minute later in almost identical circumstances, but referee Rob Styles opted to give him a warning rather than a second yellow. When Robert swung the free kick in, Robinson made an easy catch.

King had to hack the ball away to safety on 17 minutes when Shearer tried to lay it across the face of goal, then at the other end Atouba won a corner off Boumsong but Shearer was well positioned to nod Carrick's inswinger away from the near post.

A foul on Defoe by Bramble gave Tottenham a free kick 30 yards out in a central position, but Ziegler's effort was easy for Given.

A push from Brown on Shearer gave Newcastle a free kick on the left, and when Robert swung the ball in for Kluivert Spurs were happy to concede a corner which was cleared.

Boumsong was booked on 24 minutes after tumbling inside the box, with referee Styles assuming he had dived in a bid to win a spot kick.

A strong run from kanoute ended with the striker winning a corner on the Tottenham left on 28 minutes, but their short routine came to nothing.

Kanoute then a low shot on the turn saved by Given a minute later, then on 35 minutes he saw a clipped effort go into the sidenetting when Pamarot crossed from the right.

Shearer had to leave the field for treatment on 36 minutes after taking a whack to the face, so United were temporarily down to 10 men as the skipper got some attention in the dressing room.

Shearer returned two minutes later with a bandage covering his chin, and his first job was to defend a corner which eventually saw Atouba shoot straight at Given.

There was another injury problem on 39 minutes when Bramble went down and when it became clear he couldn't continue, Jermaine Jenas came off the bench as there were no defenders available.

The switch saw Aaron Hughes move into the middle alongside Boumsong, with Jenas filling in at left back for the last few minutes of the first half.

A foul by Robert on Pamarot gave Spurs a free kick right on the corner of the box, and Given did well to race off his line and punch Ziegler's diagonal ball away to safety.

Robert had a volley blocked by Pamarot when Carr crossed from the right on 44 minutes, and with two minutes of time added on not producing any further chances it was The Magpies who were in front when Styles brought proceedings to a halt.

Brown was booked for a foul on Robert 30 seconds into the second half, then Pamarot fouled the Frenchman a minute later and he too went into the notebook. Robert took the free kick from the inside left channel but Shearer was adjudged to have fouled King as he tried to get on the end of the cross.

Shearer picked out Robert with a great pass on 49 minutes and when he crossed the ball in, Kluivert's effort was straight at Robinson.

Davies volleyed wide from 12 yards on 53 minutes after kanoute flicked on a cross from the left, then Kluivert saw a header saved by Robinson at the foot of his right hand upright after a good cross from Carr.

On 63 minutes Spurs made a change, with Atouba being replaced by Robbie Keane. Robert then fired a 35 yard free kick into the Gallowgate End after Brown had tripped Kluivert.

Given made two superb saves in quick succession, firstly blocking a rasping drive from Keane then recovering to somehow push away Defoe's follow up for a corner.

Ameobi replaced the limping Kluivert before the corner was taken, and United didn't have any problems dealing with the flag kick.

As the game went into the last 20 minutes there were some tasty tackles flying in from both sides, and Ziegler was shown a delayed yellow after a foul on Dyer withy the referee allowing the advantage to be played before producing the card.

United had a scare on 83 minutes when Defoe's shot bobbled around in the box, but thankfully it fell nicely for Hughes who booted clear.

Ameobi had a chance to wrap it up on 84 minutes when Bowyer won a tackle and threaded a ball through to him, but he took a touch too many and was crowded out with the ball eventually rolling through to Robinson.

Bowyer and Brown had a bit of a scuffle on 86 minutes after a foul by the Spurs man but that quickly cooled down, and as the clock ticked down Spurs then threw on Gardener in place of Naybet to get an extra body into the box to try and snatch an equaliser.

Spurs had the ball in the net on 89 minutes through Keane after a corner, but the effort was ruled out after a foul inside the box.

Four minutes of time were added on at the end, and Hughes did well to chest down a looping header from Kanoute and kick the ball away from a yard out.

The nerves were jangling every time Spurs put the ball into the box, but there was another chance for United when Milner broke clear and squared to Ameobi but they could not make it count.

It didn't matter though as the referee blew for time seconds later to spark jubilant scenes at St. James' Park.
