Cardiff City 0

Newcastle United returned to winning ways on Saturday with a 3-0 home victory over Cardiff City in the Barclays Premier League.

Goals from Shola Ameobi, Loic Remy and substitute Steven Taylor secured maximum points for the Magpies at St. James' Park, ending a run of six successive defeats in the process.

And it was no more than United deserved for a display in which they dominated for large parts and secured a top-ten top flight finish.

Ameobi nodded home Moussa Sissoko's cross midway through the first half, while Mathieu Debuchy, Sissoko and Remy all went close to extending the advantage.

That finally happened with time running out, as Remy tapped home Cheick Tiote's deflected drive, and substitute Taylor wrapped things up in stoppage time with a close range finish.

United threatened inside 46 seconds through 13-goal leading scorer Remy.

Moussa Sissoko's powerful run down the right flank ended with a low cross which Shola Ameobi dummied, allowing it to run into the path of Remy.

The French forward could have shot first time but took a touch and saw his eventual effort blocked by a Cardiff body for a corner.

However, Cardiff hit responded and through Fraizer Campbell, who half-volleyed narrowly wide after goalkeeper Tim Krul had failed to get a firm punch on Fabio's chipped delivery.

But the Magpies were soon back on the front foot and Debuchy was next to try his luck - twice.

First, racing forward from his right-back berth, the Frenchman was denied by a good near-post save from David Marshall, before the keeper produced an even better save from the resulting corner to claw Debuchy's header out of the top corner.

United finally made the breakthrough on 18 minutes, however, and it came through Ameobi - his second goal in as many home games.

Everything positive the hosts had created involved Sissoko and, again, he was at the heart of the move, getting down the right before hoisting a superb, deep cross onto the forehead of Ameobi, who made no mistake from a couple of yards.

Newcastle weren't content with one and the impressive Sissoko sent a deflected drive against the foot of the post soon after.

However, Cardiff were always going to be dangerous on the break and so it proved when Zaha skipped past a couple of challenges on the left, strode into the area and tried to sneak a shot in at the near post.

Thankfully for the Magpies, Krul was alert to stick out a leg and impressive divert the ball behind.

Massadio Haidara was introduced at the break in place of Paul Dummett, as the hosts continued to search for their second goal of the afternoon.

On 56 minutes, Williamson almost grabbed his first in the black and white stripes, seeing his 20 yard strike take a deflection and wrongfoot Marshall, but bounce the wrong side of the upright.

But the game became a timid affair until the 76th minute when it sparked back into life with two Cardiff chances in a matter of seconds.

First, substitute Kenwyne Jones was denied by a brilliant point-blank Krul stop after Aron Gunnarsson's persistence had created the close range chance.

Then, Gunnarson beat Krul from a similar range when the keeper failed to hold a cross, but captain Fabricio Coloccini was on hand to make an outstanding clearance off the goalline.

But with two minutes of the contest remaining, United doubled their advantage and secured all three points in the process.

Cheick Tiote's angled shot was blocked by the Bluebirds' defence and it fell kindly to the feet of Remy, who took a touch before tapping in his 14th goal of the season, at the Leazes End.

Substitute Taylor put the icing on the cake in stoppage-time with goal number three of the afternoon.

A well-worked short corner was eventually headed goalwards by Remy, and Taylor snuck in ahead of Marshall to bundle home from a yard out.
