Newcastle United bowed out of the Capital One Cup at the fourth round stage, after a 2-0 extra-time defeat against Manchester City at St. James' Park.

Front pair Alvaro Negredo and Edin Dzeko struck for the visitors in a six-minute spell, to shatter the Magpies' hopes of a quarter-final spot.

The result was harsh on Alan Pardew's side, who were excellent throughout and arguably created the better chances of the night, but were made to pay for their spurned opportunities by City's extra-time rally.

Papiss Cisse, Yoan Gouffran and Vurnon Anita all threatened, while visiting goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon saved well to deny the impressive Shola Ameobi. And when United finally did beat the big Romanian stopper, Ameobi's tap-in was correctly flagged offside.

City looked more dangerous as the game wore on, however, and Negredo, James Milner and Micah Richards went close in normal time before Negredo sidefooted in to break the deadlock early in the additional half-an-hour.

The goal knocked the stuffing out of the hosts and Dzeko took advantage, rounding Tim Krul to net their second and put the Citizens in the last eight of the tournament.

City had the lion's share of possession in the opening exchanges but it was the hosts who created the first chance of the night on eight minutes.

Ameobi flicked a header into the path of Cisse, who managed to lob the ball up and over Pantilimon with his first touch, but saw his effort fall agonisingly the wrong side of the upright.

Gouffran was next to try his luck but could only direct his header off target after Mathieu Debuchy had done brilliantly to control a diagonal ball with his heel and then deliver a drilled cross to the far post.

United's strength in the final third was causing the Citizens all sorts of problems, and on the half hour mark, Moussa Sissoko saw an effort blocked before Ameobi seized upon the loose ball and drilled a half-volley towards the bottom corner, which was fingertipped behind by Pantilimon.

They had the ball in the back of the net seconds later, only to see it ruled out by an offside flag.

Anita's right-wing free-kick wasn't cleared and when Cisse fired across the face of goal, Ameobi - just ahead of the last defender - tapped home.

The hosts' momentum was growing, and another chance went begging in the 34th minute; this time Anita sidefooting a volley wide from just inside the penalty area.

City briefly threatened as the clock ticked towards half-time but neither Negredo nor Richards could find the target with wild strikes.

Newcastle started the second period where they had left off in the first - on the front foot - and Pantilimon had to be alert to smother a low Anita shot six minutes after the restart.

The visitors responded though and Richards headed former Magpie James Milner's cross onto the roof of the net.

And Milner was inches away from breaking the deadlock on 63 minutes.

Jesus Navas beat United goalkeeper Krul in a race to a hopeful, long punt down the right flank, and with the Dutchman stranded, Navas teed up Milner. However, from a tight angle out near the touchline, the England midfielder fired over the top.

Krul did better soon after when he clawed away Negredo's chip, after the Spaniard had weaved his way through United's defence and tried to make a fool of the big stopper.

The sides were still goalless and it went to extra-time, but the Magpies should have led inside the first minute of that additional period when Cisse latched on to an inch-perfect Hatem Ben Arfa through ball to beat the offside trap.

Ten yards out with just Pantilimon to beat, the striker's first touch was good but his next - a shot - was blocked by the goalkeeper, and United had to be content with a corner.

And they were left to rue that miss in the 99th minute whe Negredo edged City ahead. Dzeko worked himself a yard of space down the left before delivering a low cross for the Spanish front man to nip in ahead of Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and sidefoot home.

Having been provider for their first, Dzeko got himself on the scoresheet just before half-time of extra-time, finishing off a flowing team move and rounding Krul before providing a simple finish.

Newcastle only had pride to play for but that didn't stop them continuing to give it a go, and only an outstanding goalline clearance from Joleon Lescott kept out Ben Arfa's volley.

However, it wasn't to be the hosts' night, and City progressed to the quarter-finals of the competition.
