Newcastle United 2 Wigan Athletic 2

Fabricio Coloccini

Stand-in skipper Fabricio Coloccini grabbed all the headlines against Wigan with an injury-time goal that saw United snatch a priceless point against Roberto Martinez's side at St. James' Park.

The Argentine's late header - his first home goal for the club - completed a remarkable second-half comeback after Wigan had scored two goals in as many minutes through former Magpies winger Charles N'Zogbia.

Substitute Shola Ameobi had halved the deficit with less than 20-minutes remaining, heading home his first Premier League goal of the season after a great cross from the left from Jonás Gutiérrez.

The goal breathed new life into United, who were left stunned after N'Zogbia's double strike had put Wigan in a commanding position at the break. The Frenchman's first, a header on 22-minutes, came from Di Santo's deflected cross.

But worse was to follow just seconds later when the 24-year-old was left in acres of space down the left. Di Santo was once again the provider and though he still had plenty to do, N'Zogbia made no mistake and lashed the ball past Tim Krul to make it 2-0.

St. James' Park was shell-shocked, and Newcastle went in at the break with a mountain to climb, but things began to turn United's way in the second-half as Chris Hughton's men went all-out for a response.

And once Ameobi had thrown the game wide open after coming off the bench on the hour mark, it was all set-up for a frantic finish as Newcastle went looking for the equaliser.

The last-ditch leveller arrived with just seconds to spare when Andy Carroll helped Gutiérrez's right-wing corner towards the back-post, where Coloccini was waiting to rescue a point for the Magpies.
