Carling Cup Second Round

Dan King reports from The Crown Ground ...

90mins+3 - ACCRINGTON GOAL (2-3): A dramatic end here as LuaLua sees a shot hit the base of the post and roll across the line, only for Accrington to break and score following a goalmouth scramble. Who got it, it's impossible to say, such was the melee and the view from this pressbox, but thankfully it was nothing more than a consolation. It's finished 3-2.

90mins - Haris Vuckic has gone down in the centre circle and is replaced for the final few seconds by Kevin Nolan.

90mins - Jimmy Ryan cuts in from the left and hits a low shot from 20 yards, but it's comfortably collected by Krul.

86mins - Shane Ferguson, who has got better and better as his debut game has gone on, whips in a great cross for Nile Ranger, whose header is well saved by Dunbavin.

85mins - Another super save from Tim Krul keeps Newcastle's two-goal advantage intact. Putterill looks a certain scorer from six yards but the Dutchman makes himself large and throws out a hand to somehow deny the Stanley striker. He has made two great stops in this half.

81mins - 4,098 is the attendance here - 1,333 of which are Newcastle fans. Fantastic support from the Toon Army once again.

76mins - Tim Krul makes a great save from James Ryan's 25 yard effort, tipping it around the post at full stretch, and then the corner is scrambled behind with Krul possibly getting the crucial touch again, spreading himself at a Stanley player's feet.

70mins - Lovenkrands turns provider to slip in Nile Ranger who is cutting in from the right, and the young striker's shot flashes across goal thanks to a touch from Dunbavin.

69mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-3): But they'll have to attack even more now, because Newcastle are 3-1 up thanks to Peter Lovenkrands' first goal of the season. LuaLua is the provider, again causing problems for Stanley and getting a cross in from the byline; Lovenkrands' initial shot is blocked but he is alert to the loose ball and sweeps it home.

69mins - Chris Turner is brought on for Accrington for Jonathan Bateson in what is seemingly an attacking move by the home side.

59mins - LuaLua is looking lively down the left in this second half, and after another strong run he lets fly from the angle of the box. Unfortunately for him, it goes just past the far post.

50mins - How are Newcastle not 3-1 up here? A great run from Kazenga LuaLua sets up Ameobi, whose shot is well parried by Dunbavin, but the ball breaks to Nile Ranger who has time to settle himself, only for his shot to be cleared off the line. A third would have wrapped up the tie here, but as it is, it remains very much alive.

48mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-2): But now we do have a third goal, and although it's not as pleasing on the eye as the previous two, it's just as pleasing to the Toon fans on the open terrace as Ryan Taylor's was for it puts Newcastle ahead again. Peter Lovenkrands flicks the ball on and Shola Ameobi turns quickly in the box before hitting a low shot which zips into the net.

47mins - Charlie Barnett is lurking on the edge of the area as a corner is half-cleared and shows great technique to volley goalwards - but thankfully for United, it flies inches wide. We've already had two great goals and that was almost a third.

46mins - There's been a delay in starting this second half because the Stanley Ultras has unfurled a load of toilet rolls on the pitch - then, just as the stewards had cleared the pitch of them, several more were thrown onto the turf! We're back underway now, however.

45+1mins - That goal means it's 1-1 at half-time.

45mins - ACCRINGTON GOAL (1-1): Just as the fourth official Mark Haywood holds up the board to tell us there will be just one minute of added time, Ray Putterill has got Stanley right back into this game with a goal almost as good as Ryan Taylor's nine minutes earlier. He takes aim from 25 yards and it flies past Tim Krul to send those Accrington fans into raptures.

42mins - It did only temporarily stun those homes fans, though, because they're now louder if anything. And as well as the fans behind the goal repeatedly chanting 'come on Stanley,' there are a group of lads on a nearby rooftop jumping up and down and joining in!

36mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (0-1): It's come out of nothing, but Newcastle are ahead thanks to a stunning goal from Ryan Taylor. The full-back has enjoyed a good game and lets fly from fully 35 yards, with his strike arrowing into the top corner. That has temporarily silenced the so-called Stanley Ultras behind that goal.

35mins - Kazenga LuaLua does well down the left to twist and turn and get his cross in and Nile Ranger shoots on the turn, but it's too close to Dunbavin.

22mins - Ryan Taylor is getting forward well from right-back and he tees up Haris Vuckic outside the box. The Slovenian steadies himself and takes a shot, but it's lacking in conviction and is easily gathered by the Accrington keeper.

20mins - Ameobi meets Taylor's corner and it takes a block on the line from striker Andy Parkinson to stop the ball going past a beaten Dunbavin - that was close.

14mins - A superb block from Stanley skipper Sean Hessey denies Ameobi from eight yards after the Newcastle striker had jinked into the box. The pressure is being cranked up nicely here.

13mins - Ryan Taylor's deep corner is met by Ameobi, but the United captain for the day gets under the ball and it goes well over the bar. Newcastle are starting to grow into this game.

11mins - Ryan Donaldson tries his luck from 25 yards but, on what looks like a difficult pitch, he doesn't get the connection he would have wanted and scuffs it wide.

9mins - Peter Lovenkrands gets a header in from six yards after Ryan Taylor's long throw bounces in the box, but he has to generate all the power himself and, although he has Ian Dunbavin at full stretch, the Stanley shot-stopper's able to hold onto the ball. It's United's first chance, though.

4mins - James Ryan has the first shot of the game, but his shot is an ambitious one - he was at least 30 yards out and he dragged it well wide of goal.

There are 11 changes in the Newcastle starting line-up to the side which beat Aston Villa 6-0 on Sunday, but still several players that would fall into the 'senior' bracket.

Tim Krul starts in goal, with the defence made up of Ryan Taylor, Northern Irish full-back Shane Ferguson - making his senior debut - Tamas Kadar and James Tavernier.

In midfield, Kazenga LuaLua, Ryan Donaldson and Haris Vuckic start, while Peter Lovenkrands may start on the left wing with skipper Shola Ameobi and Nile Ranger up-front.

There is plenty of experience on the bench, although Ole Soderberg has yet to make his senior bow - but he was on the bench in this stage of the Carling Cup last year, when United lost to Peterborough.
