FULL-TIME SUMMARY

A LATE Barnsley equaliser thwarted Newcastle United in their attempts to make it eight wins on the spin in front of 7,000 travelling fans.

Without concesion in the final ten minutes of any game this season, it had appeared that The Magpies were headed for another three points when substitute Marlon Harewood latched onto Andy Carroll's headed flick before lobbing over Luke Steele in the 78th minute to make it 2-1.

But there was to be one final twist and full-back Bobby Hassell popped up to head home Adam Hammill's corner with just three minutes left on the clock.

That was after Kevin Nolan had fired the visitors into a 6th-minute lead having been sprung clear by the head of Carroll.

But Barnsley roared out the traps after half-time and drew level on 52 minutes when Emil Hallfredson smashed in at the far post from Anderson Da Silva's centre.

The point takes United eight clear of second-placed West Brom with Middlesbrough next up at Gallowgate in eight days' time.

SECOND-HALF UPDATES (click refresh for latest)

Full-time here at Oakwell, 2-2.

90+3min - Ryan Taylor beats the wall with a 25-yard free-kick but unfortunately for United the dipping effort also evades the Barnsley target.

There will be five minutes added time.

90+1min - Iain Hume replaces Daniel Bogdanovic.

90min - Andy Carroll and marker Darren Moore enter the book for an off-the-ball tussle.

87min - BARNSLEY GOAL (2-2): The Tykes have refused to give up on their quest for parity and a corner from substitute Adam Hammill is turned home by the head of full-back Bobby Hassell amid a cluster of home and away shirts inside a crowded six-yard area.

83min - Adam Hammill is coming on for the hosts with Anderson Da Silva making way.

79min - United make a double change as Zurab Khizanishvili and Nile Ranger replace Jose Enrique and Fabrice Pancrate.

78min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-2): Andy Carroll climbs to flick on a forward punt and it's Marlon Harewood who ghosts into the area to drop a first-time lob over Luke Steele and into the far corner.

75min - Enrique roars down the left channel and out-muscles Hassell before lifting into the area in the direction of Carroll. It's a decent ball but the Toon man is outnumbered and Shotton heads clear - this game could still go either way.

73min - Hallfredson takes aim from 25 yards but lashes wide after some neat build-up play from the hosts.

69min - A change for United sees Marlon Harewood replace Jonas Gutierrez.

67min - A seemingly harmless punt downfield has sprung Andy Gray clear, Steve Harper has retreated to his goalmouth area but the Tykes striker makes  a complete mess of a first-time effort leaving manager Mark Robins head-in-hands on the touchline.

64min - Barnsley gift possession to Pancrate 25 yards and the Frenchman goes desperately close to punishing their generosity as his low rocket skids narrowly wide.

62min - But the home side break away and win a corner on the right. Hallfredson flights into the area and, after Shotton had towered highest to meet, it's only the desperate swing of Jose Enrique on the goal line which prevents a Barnsley second.

59min - United have responded to that Barnsley leveller and have spent the past five minutes camped in the Tykes half.

54min - Carroll latches onto Nolan's headed flick having stolen the wrong side of Shotton. Keeper Steele has been drawn from his line and the Geordie striker, with the ball on his favoured left foot, lifts a delicate lob above the stranded netminder only for his effort to bounce the wrong side of the post - that was close.

52min - BARNSLEY GOAL (1-1): You have to say this goal has been on the cards since the start of the second half and it's Iceland internationak Emil Hallfredson who smashes into the roof of the net from close range at the far post after Anderson had clipped into the danger zone from the right.

49min - The home crowd have been encouraged by the bright opening to the second period and the hosts again go close as Colace whistles a 20-yard drive just inches wide of Harper's far post.

48min - Barnsley have come roaring out of the blocks here and win another corner. Hallfredson throws a pacey ball to the near post but it's the forehead of Smith which wins to clear.

46min - There's an early corner for The Tykes as Anderson's cross clips behind off Coloccini's heel. Harper fists clear from Hallfredson's delivery.

United will be attacking the goal behind which the Toon Army are housed - can they find the goals to kill this game off?

FIRST-HALF UPDATES

And so the first hald draws to a close with United leading thanks to Kevin Nolan's 6th-minute strike.

45+1min - Enrique hoists a ball into Carroll's feet 20 yards from goal, the United man makes space for the shot off marker Moore but scuffs wide.

There will be two minutes added time.

44min - This half is petering out somewhat with neither side having created anything of note during the last ten minutes or so.

42min - Steven Harper is forced into a hurried clearance when Bogdanovic charges down Steven Taylor's backpass.

38min - The latest offering from the Toon Army is one of "Jingle bells, jingle all the way, oh what fun it is to see Newcastle win away!"

33min - A scrappy period is brought to life when Ryan Taylor seizes possession on halfway before eating up the ground in front of him with a purposeful burst. The defender has options ahead of him but opts to shoot and is unlucky to see a 30-yard fizzer arrow just the wrong side of Steele's frame - great effort.

27min - Steele is adjudged to have carried the ball outside the area and United have a free-kick on the left-hand side of the 18-yard box. Ryan Taylor decides to drill low into the mix and the ball cannons out of a red boot to Nicky Butt 20 yards from goal. The skipper runs onto the loose ball and fires back towards the target only for his top-corner bound strike to deflect up off a red head and away for a corner. Nothing comes of Taylor's delivery.

25min - Barnsley are beginning to creep back into this and Enrique is forced to concede another corner from Colace inside the area, Hallfredson whips over but Harper comes to claim with confidence.

23min - Coloccini stamps out a promising home move down the right but it's at the expense of a corner. Hallfredson hangs a cross in the air but the ball cuts through bodies and runs away for a goal-kick.

18min - An intricate United build up involving both Taylors, Smith and Butt sees the skipper zip a low pass to Andy Carroll in space on the right flank, The striker is alert to the penalty-box burst of Fabrice Pancrate and slides a first-time ball in behind the Barnsley backline. The French winger hares after the low delivery but is only just pipped to the ball by keeper Steele who dashes from his line to smother.

15min - A Tykes corner is flapped at by Harper but, when Anderson attempts to hook back on goal, the ball dribbles tamely wide.

12min - United have to deal with a potentially troublesome set-play but Alan Smith shows greater desire than Gray to get to Hallfredson's whipped, near-post delivery and the blonde-haired midfielder heads clear.

8min - A rapid United breakway culminates in Gutierrez flashing a header on goal from Ryan Taylor's delivery but Steele leaps to pluck the Argentine's effort to the safety of his chest.

6min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (0-1): Ryan Taylor's forward ball is helped on by the head of Andy Carroll with Kevin Nolan beating the offside to burst clear on goal. There's still work to be done but the Scouser holds his nerve to slot left-footed past the on-rushing Luke Steele for his tenth of the season - the goal sends the Toon Army into ecstacy!

4min - This is a small pitch here at Oakwell with the dimensions only just satisfying Football League requirements - the size evidenced by the fact Steve Harper's downfield punt travels comfortably to the opposition danger zone.

3min - Brazilian Anderson carries forward from deep, the midfielder opts for the shot 20 yards from goal but Steve Harper is equal to his low bouncer and falls to smother.

1min - And there's an early chance for the visitors as Nicky Butt clips a cross onto the head of Andy Carroll but his effort, from 10 yards out, loops the wrong side of the crossbar.

Alan Smith and Kevin Nolan get us started with United, kitted in black and white, defending the end where that incredible away following is housed.

The Geordies have turned Oakwell into a cauldron of noise as the 7,000-strong Toon Army greet their heroes as the teams emerge from the tunnell.

TEAM NEWS

CHRIS Hughton makes three changes to the side which won at Coventry with Andy Carroll, Kevin Nolan and Ryan Taylor restored to the starting line-up.

Nolan returns from suspension in place of Peter Lovenkrands, Carroll comes in for Shola Ameobi and Taylor is a straight swap for Danny Simpson at right-back.

That means United, seeking an eight straight win, are likely to revert to their 4-5-1 formation with Nolan deployed in an advanced role off lone striker Carroll.
