Craig Hope reports from St.James' Park ...

FULL-TIME SUMMARY

MARLON Harewood struck twice and Peter Lovenkrands opened his account for the season as Newcastle United ensured victory during a blistering opening half hour at St.James' Park.

It took just eight minutes for Harewood to head Chris Hughton's table-toppers in front as he cooly nodded beyond Dorus De Vries from close range.

Lovenkrands was then the grateful recepient of Jonas Gutierrez's flighted centre on 21 minutes as the Dane, too, used his forehead to guide past the visiting stopper.

And it was a hat-trick of headers for the host on 28 minutes when Lovenkrands turned provider for strike partner Harewood to double his tally from six yards out.

Full-time, 3-0 United.

90+3min - And Alan Smith will be left wondering how he has failed to notch his first for the club as, following a swift breakway and clever ball inside from Pancrate, the skipper is denied from point-blank range by the legs of De Vries.

90+2min - There's still time for Tim Krul to serve up a reminder of his precious talent as he beats clear Britton's powerful volley before Enrique smuggles clear the loose ball.

There will be four minutes added time.

87min - Skipper Alan Tate is the first man in the book as Nile Ranger is sent sprawling just past halfway - this game is petering out now.

80min - Nile Ranger should break his scoring duck but is unable to get his head over Peter Lovenkrands' far-post drop and the Londoner lobs his effort on to the roof of the net from just eight yards out with goal gaping.

79min - And Pancrate wins cheers from the home crowd following his first involvement; the Frenchman charging up the right flank at break-neck speed before eventually losing out as he attempted to burst in on goal.

76min - Fabrice Pancrate is coming on for his United bow with Danny Guthrie the man heading for the dugout.

71min - Peter Lovenkrands steals away on the shoulder of marker Tate before darting into the area. It's a narrow angle and the Dane opts for an early poke in attempt to catch out De Vries but his low stab, while beating the visiting keeper, also evades the far post - decent effort, though.

68min - Two-goal Marlon Harewood makes way to warm applause with Nile Ranger his replacement.

66min - Swansea fans think they've scored when David Cotterill cuts in from the right before seeing a low strike cannon off the advertising hoardings and into the back of Tim Krul's net - the home supporters enjoyed that!

63min - With Taylor off the field and United down to ten men The Swans look to push forward. And they come desperately close to pulling one back when Cotterill steams in to stab Dyer's far-post cross past Krul only for Danny Simpson to scamper back on to the goal-line before swiping clear.

61min - There's a brief stoppage for Steven Taylor to receive treatment after the Geordie defender is knocked to the floor having taken David Cotterill's cross full in the face.

55min - Tim Krul is sharply off his line in racing to block with his shins after Nathan Dyer had been sprung clear by Britton - good save.

53min - Peter Lovenkrands is denied a second by a linesman's flag after arrowing Danny Guthrie's free-kick into the bottom corner from 10 yards - that looked tight.

52min - A double change for The Swans sees Craig Beattie replaced by Gorka Pintado and Cedric Van Der Gun make way for David Cotterill.

48min - Orlandi is chipped in on goal by the inventive Pratley. However, the Spaniard is off balance and that allows Fabricio Coloccini to recover and block what was a weak effort.

United have chosen to take no risks with Steve Harper and he is replaced by Tim Krul during the interval.

FIRST-HALF UPDATES

Half-time, 3-0 to United.

45min - Steve Harper is at full stretch to divert Nathan Dyer's 20-yard rasper around the post after United had squandered possession in the middle of the park. Britton's corner skids through a crowded six-yard area and runs away to safety.

44min - Jose Enrique's name rings out from Level 7 as the Spaniard uses his muscular frame to usher the ball out of play for a goal kick despite the desperate efforts of Craig Beattie.

40min - United have taken their foot of the pedal a little here and Nathan Dyer is the latest Swans player to have a pop from distance; the diminutive winger shaving the base of Steve Harper's post from all of 25 yards.

36min - Andrea Orlandi has looked Swansea's biggest threat and the Spaniard again tries his luck from range, this time dragging wide with a low right-footed drive.

30min - But United have Steve Harper to thank as he scrambles to claw Darren Pratley's deflected effort around the upright before winning a pat on the back from his team-mates - that was some save. The corner pinballs around the United area before being hacked to the safety of halfway by Danny Simpson.

28min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (3-0): Peter Lovenkrands turns provider in a goal not dissimilar to his own; the Dane burning by Ashley Williams before dropping an inch-perfect cross on to the head of Marlon Harewood who flashes beyond a helpless De Vries for his second.

25min - There's a break in play which allows Steve Harper to get some treatment on what looks like a back problem - Tim Krul is gloved and ready should the United No.1 be unable to continue.

21min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (2-0): Jonas Gutierrez drives down the left flank before digging out a flighted cross which drops on to the grateful forehead of Peter Lovenkrands who is left with the simplest if tasks in nodding from three yards out - that's the Dane's first of the season - United are crusing here.

19min - The visitors' first corner arrives when Orlandi's ambitous drive from range brushes the shinpad of Danny Simpson and zips behind. The delivery from Van Der Gun has too much weight and United clear.

15min - United are well in the acendency and Harewood is in the hunt for his second but slices well wide from 20 yards after good work from Lovenkrands.

12min - Guthrie twice blocks efforts from Beattie on the edge of the area and the midfielder's bravery means Steve Harper is not called into action when really the Swans man should have tested the Toon stopper.

8min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-0): Guthrie's corner is worked short to Smith who in turns arches a cross into the area which is met by the head of Coloccini with the ball looping in the air. The Swans backline has stepped up and there is a suspicion of offside as Marlon Harewood, unmarked, steals in to direct a cool header beyond De Vries from inside the six-yard area.

4min - Swansea haven't been out of their own half yet and United's first corner, delivered by Danny Guthrie, is glanced to safety by the head of skipper Tate.

1min - This has been a very shaky start from the visitors and Tate's blushes are spared as his mis-placed pass lands at the feet of Lovenkrands only for the unsuspecting Dane, on the edge of the area, to mis-control allowing Williams to clear.

TEAM NEWS

CHRIS Hughton is forced into one change from the side which won at Preston on Monday with Peter Lovenkrands replacing the poorly Andy Carroll.

Both Danny Simpson and Ryan Taylor have recovered from thigh and calf problems respectively, with the former taking his place in the back four alongside Steven Taylor, Fabricio Coloccini and Jose Enrique.

The midfield quartet of Danny Guthrie, Alan Smith, Kevin Nolan and Jonas Gutierrez also remains the same.

Lovenkrands partners Marlon Harewood in attack.

French wideman Fabrice Pancrate, yet to make his debut for The Magpies, is named among the substitutes.
