Craig Hope reports from London Road ...

FULL-TIME SUMMARY

A YOUNG Newcastle United side exited the Carling Cup as Peterborough United struck twice inside the opening 31 minutes to secure a 2-0 success.

Chris Hughton included four full debutants with Haris Vuckic, James Tavernier, Ryan Donaldson and Ben Tozer handed their first start for the Magpies.

And the experience of Darren Ferguson's men told during a frenetic opening period in which the hosts bagged the goals to clinch their place in the Fourth Round.

Craig Mackail-Smith broke the deadlock on 20 minutes, stooping to turn home a close-range header after Ryan Donaldson's attempted clearance had cannoned off George Boyd.

Tom Williams doubled the advantage just after the half-hour mark when, despite a narrow angle, he managed to squeeze a fierce shot between Tim Krul and his near post.

The Geordies were reduced to ten men after the break as Danny Guthrie picked up two yellow cards, and they had Dutch star Krul to thank for keeping the score to just two with a string of fine saves to deny Posh.

LIVE SECOND-HALF UPDATES (click refresh for latest)

Full-time, 2-0 to the hosts.

90+3min - Tozer tracks McLean's forward surge and pokes away from the toe of the forward at the expense of a corner. Posh waste the resulting flag-kick.

There will be four minutes added time.

87min - Steven Taylor climbs to steer Ben Tozer's long centre on goal but Joe Lewis shuffles to his left to grasp with relative comfort.

85min - Craig Mackail-Smith makes way for Chris Whelpdale.

81min - Krul makes another fine save as this time he uses his shin to deflect McLean's low shot up and over the crossbar - United clear from the corner.

79min - Craig Morgan hooks a deep corner on target but is denied a goal by the acrobatic efforts of Alan Smith who leaps to volley clear on the line.

76min - They have a corner on the right but Ryan Taylor's arched centre is headed clear by McLean on the edge of the six-yard box.

75min - Can the Geordies find a goal to set up an exciting finale?

74min - Paul Coutts makes way for Shaun Batt.

73min - George Boyd becomes the latest man flashed yellow as he clips the heels of Peter Lovenkrands, in full flow, on halfway.

68min - Ryan Taylor is booked for a blatant tug on Keates.

67min - The Magpies somehow survive as, from a swift Posh break upfield, Krul forces clear McLean's 10-yard strike before Ben Tozer puts his body on the line to block Mackail-Smith's well-struck follow-up from inside the six-yard area.

64min - Kevin Nolan is travelling away from goal but manages to direct Ryan Taylor's out-swinging centre back towards the target. However, the midfielder is unable to generate sufficient purchase and the ball trickles wide.

60min - Dean Keates has a go from range but Krul watches the bobbling strike all of the way and stoops to gather.

59min - United make a treble change with Alan Smith, Geremi and Kevin Nolan replacing Haris Vuckic, Kazenga LuaLua and Ryan Donaldson.

54min - NEWCASTLE RED CARD: DANNY GUTHRIE sees a second yellow for a late lunge on Boyd midway inside United's half - referee Stroud is on the scene within seconds and shows no hesitation in sending the midfielder for an early bath.

51min - The home crowd think Coutts has added a third when his daisy-cutter from 12 yards out ripples Tim Krul's net - closer inspection, however, reveals the midfielder's effort had slid inches wide of the upright before nestling into the side-netting.

50min - Coutts lifts a corner to the near post but fails to beat Ranger and the striker heads clear.

48min - Boyd has been a real handful for United's backline and the long-haired frontman fashions a yard for the shot just outside the area but is thwarted in his attempt to squeeze then ball inside the near post by an alert Krul who beats clear.

United have stuck with the same XI as they get the second period started.

FIRST-HALF UPDATES

And so the whistle sounds, 2-0 to the hosts at the break.

45+2min - Referee Stroud waves away another penalty appeal as Lovenkrands is tripped by Williams inside the area. Posh break and within five seconds Mackail-Smith has rattled the United crossbar after being slipped in on goal by McLean - the visiting dugout aren't happy, and so they shouldn't be, that was another blatatnt spot-kick!

There will be three minutes added time.

41min - Steven Taylor becomes the fourth man in the book inside seven minutes, the skipper cautioned for a foul on Coutts.

38min - Diagouraga is booked for an over-zealous challenge on Ranger midway inside the Posh half.

36min - Guthrie follows his team-mate into the book for booting the ball away in frustration after the award of a Posh free-kick.

34min - Tim Krul sees yellow for stepping outside the area with the ball in his hands, albeit accidentally. McLean smashes the resulting free-kick into the United wall before Tavernier completes the clearance.

31min - PETERBOROUGH GOAL (2-0): Tozer loses possession inside his own area under pressure from three blue shirts, the ball is worked wide to TOM WILLIAMS who defies a narrow angle to smash between Krul and his near post to double the advantage.

28min - LuaLua, in attempting to clear from inside his own area, smashes the ball off the shins of Zakuani. The ball flies toward the back of the net but Krul demonstrates razor-sharp reactions to extend a leg and divert aroundf the upright - what a save! Morgan heads on target from Coutts' flag-kick but it's a routine stop for Krul.

25min - Guthrie centres after protests are waved away but Joe Lewis collects at the near post.

24min - LuaLua glides through an almost inviting Posh backline and into the penalty area, the United winger looks set to cross until being toppled to the turf by a sliding Craig Morgan. The ball runs over the by-line and, just when everyone inside London Road expects Keith Stroud to point to the spot, the referee signals for a corner to the surprise of all and disgust of those in black-and-white.

20min - PETERBOROUGH GOAL (1-0): United fail to deal with a short corner as Ryan Taylor's attempted clearance, from Boyd's cross, cannons back off the Posh frontman with CRAIG MACKAIL-SMITH stooping to head past a helpless Tim Krul from six yards out.

16min - Donaldson carries forward from halfway but shanks a 25-yard effort wide of goal.

10min - Williams robs Donaldson on the by-line and cuts back for Mackail-Smith, the blonde-haired frontman fires on goal first-time but Krul is equal to the effort and leaps to palm around the post - great stop. Coutts' corner is flashed on goal by the head of McLean with the ball cannoning off the crossbar and back into a crowd of bodies. United scramble a quick-fix blockade inside their six-yard area and the ball is forced clear as far as Zakuani who, returning a first-time strike on target, is denied by the palms of Krul. Still the danger is not clear and when the loose ball bounces through a cluster of shirts it eventually rolls clear for a goal-kick - how the Magpies survived that we'll never know!

7min - Russell Martins draws a low cross back into the path of Frecklington from the right, the midfielder opts for the first-time sweep but the snatched effort, from 14 yards, is saved with ease by Tim Krul.

2min - Frecklington roars through the middle of the park unopposed, the midfielder burns by Ben Tozer and into the area but a heavy touch robs him of the chance to shoot and Ryan Taylor covers before hacking to the stands.

Posh get us started with United attacking the end where the 2,000-strong Toon Army are housed.

It's a balmy night inside a packed London Road as United, wearing their traditional black and white, and Posh emerge from the tunnell.

TEAM NEWS

CHRIS Hughton hands full debuts to no fewer than four Magpie youngsters for tonight's Carling Cup clash at London Road.

Highly-rated Sloveninan Haris Vuckic, Bradford-born full-back James Tavernier, Devonshire centre-back Ben Tozer and Geordie midfielder Ryan Donaldson all start their first senior game.

Vuckic is the youngest of that quartet at 17 years and 33 days, while Tavernier is also still just 17.

United's backline is made up of all the 'T's; Tavernier, Tozer, Taylor and Taylor.

Danish ace Peter Lovenkrands lines up on the right-hand side of midfield, with Danny Guthrie partnering Donaldson in the centre of the park and Kazenga LuaLua on the left.

Vuckic will operate just off lone frontman Nile Ranger.

Steven Taylor captains the side for the first time from the off in a competitive fixture.

Tonight's tie will be decided by extra-time and penalties if the score remains all square after 90 and 120 minutes.
