FULL-TIME SUMMARY

NEWCASTLE United are back up to second in the table as goals from Steven Taylor, Kevin Nolan and Andy Carroll clinched a 3-1 victory over Plymouth Argyle.

The Magpies took just six minutes to find a breakthrough when Steven Taylor, unmarked at the far post, stooped to head home Geremi's deep corner.

Ryan Taylor had a chance to double the advantage just before half-time when, through on goal, he was somehow denied by the palms of Romain Larrieu.

United were far from fluent after the break and Argyle found what was a deserved leveller on 50 minutes as Karl Duguid stabbed past Steve Harper from point-blank range after Cillian Sheridan had landed a clever, chipped cross on his foot.

Chris Hughton brought on Danny Guthrie and Nile Ranger before the hour mark and the pair played a part as Kevin Nolan edged the hosts back in front when he forced Guthrie's far-post drop into the back of the net from inside the six-yard area.

And Andy Carroll made certain of the points with a unstoppable volley from 12 yards out with six minutes left on the clock.

SECOND-HALF UPDATES (click reresh for latest)

Full-time, 3-1 United.

90+2min - Big Andy is really enjoying himself here and rattles the crossbar with a spectacular scissor-kick after juggling inside the area.

90+1min - Carroll drives forward from deep before shooting wide from 20 yards - perhaps Guthrie, supporting to his left, was the better option.

There will be three minutes added time.

88min - Enrique skids a low ball into six-yard area but Larrieu reaches out to gather with Carroll lurking.

84min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (3-1): ANDY CARROLL surely makes certain of the points as he bursts in on goal before lashing a low volley into the bottom corner from 14 yards - fantastic finish.

81min - Argyle are throwing on another striker with Chris Clark making way for Rory Fallon.

78min - The resulting free-kick is worked short to Enrique, the Spaniard serves up an inviting centre from the left which is flashed inches over the crossbar by the head of Carroll from 12 yards.

78min - Arnason enters the book as he tugs Carroll to the ground with the Geordie striker looking to wriggle free of his marker on halfway.

76minm - Alan Judge replaces Alan Gow.

75min - Duguid comes within a whisker of netting a second equaliser as his 12-yard sweep lands the wrong side of Harper's upright after Mackie had ran free down the right before cutting back for his team-mate.

73min - Ranger chases a lost cause and is rewarded with a corner as Gray is hurried into a wayward poke over the by-line. And the Toon frontman is almost on the end of Ryan Taylor's delivery but is out-jumped by Lowry.

70min - Ranger cushions Taylor's chip into the path of Carroll, the Geordie striker shifts the ball onto his favoured left foot but spoons a 20-yard effort wide.

64min - Nile Ranger climbs above Arnason to turn Enrique's free-kick on goal but is unable to get sufficient purchase and Larrieu saves.

61min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (2-1): And the subs have an immediate impact. Ranger backheels to Geremi who hangs up a ball to the back post where Carroll flicks on to Guthrie. The midfielder checks inside before landing a looping cross onto the boot of KEVIN NOLAN who forced home from point-blank range.

59min - And those changes arrive as Joey Barton and Peter Lovenkrands make way for Nile Ranger and Danny Guthrie.

57min - The home crowd are getting restless - United need to make a change.

55min - The Magpies are under the cosh here and have started the second period poorly.

53min - Sawyer drifts infield from the left before curling for Harper's top corner from 20 yards. It's a terrific effort and only the fingertips of a flying Toon stopper deny the full-back a goal. United clear from the corner.

50min - PLYMOUTH GOAL (1-1): You have to say an Argyle leveller has been coming and it arrives courtesy of KARL DUGUID as he stabs home from close range after Sheridan had clipped a delicate cross into the six-yard area.

49min - Ryan Taylor's forward wedge is glanced behind by a backpedalling Lowry. Geremi delivers but, after a game of head tennis, Argyle clear.

46min - Sheridan squeezes aa low shot through bodies from 20 yards but Harper has read the striker's intent and shuffles to his right to save.

No changes during the break as Argyle get the second period started with United attacking the Gallowgate End.

FIRST-HALF ACTION

Half-time, United lead thanks to Steven Taylor's 6th-minute header.

44min - Andy Carroll sees yellow for a stray arm which connects with Fletcher.

42min - Ryan Taylor finds himself with just Larrieu to beat as Carroll's header drops to his feet on the edge of the six-yard area. The Liverpudlian stabs goalwards but the French stopper somehow hurls his body to beat clear - it's an unbelievable save which leaves the Toon man with his head in his hands in despair.

41min - David Gray is booked for a late lunge which topples a full speed Lovenkrands on the left wing.

40min - Jose Enrique is robbed by Gow on the by-line and the Argyle winger darts into the six-yard area. He flashes a low cross beyond Steve Harper blocking his near post and, when Steven Taylor stretches to intercept, the ball bounces off his boot and onto the post before being hacked clear by Coloccini - that was close.

33min - And Simpson eventually succumbs to his ankle injury and his replaced by Ryan Taylor.

29min - The rangey Sheridan is slid in on goal by Sawyer, the angle is tight but the striker unleashes a first-time shot in the hope of catching Steve Harper unawares. But the Toon stopper has anticipated the early shot and stoops to save at his near post, gathering at the second attempt.

28min - There's an extended break in play as Danny Simpson receives treatment for what looks like an ankle problem.

23min - An encouraging start from the hosts has made way for a little sloppiness and complacency and Argyle win a corner when Fletcher's 20-yard effort cannons up off the boot of Barton and loops wide. But it's Carroll again who towers highest to power clear Clark's delivery - great work from the Geordie striker.

22min - Carroll is again back on defensive duty, this time heading clear Gow's free-kick.

19min - Danny Simpson has time to control Gow's deep centre but needlessly heads behind for a corner. Chris Clark delivers but Sheridan shoves Andy Carroll and United have a free-kick.

15min - United win successive corners, the second, delivered by Geremi is headed on goal by Alan Smith only for Fletcher to block on the penalty spot before clearing.

13min - Lovenkrands manufactures room for a strike in the left channel, his low shot is palmed out into the vacant six-yard area by Larrieu and it is a green shirt which first arrives on the scene to clear.

11min - Danny Simpson gallops down the right flank before drawing a sharp pass back to Kevin Nolan in space 12 yards from goal. The Liverpudlian attempts to sweep a right-footed effort on goal but sees his shot blocked by Arnason - that was a chance.

6min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-0): Kevin Nolan wins a corner when his cross-cum-shot is deflected behind off Arnason. Geremi drops a ball to the far post where STEVEN TAYLOR, unmarked and stooping low, directs a header into the bottom corner.

5min - Duguid again has a go, this dispatching a spectacular, first-time volley which zips a good couple of feet above Steve Harper's crossbar.

2min - Alan Smith is caught in possession on the edge of the United area and the ball rolls to Duguid. The midfielder has just Steve Harper to beat but fails to steer his effort wide of the Toon stopper and he saves with little difficulty.

1min - Geremi tests Larrieu with an early centre but the Argyle keeper handles comfortably despite pressure from Carroll.

The Magpies get the game started attacking the Leazes End.
