Craig Hope reports from Bloomfield Road ...
NEWCASTLE United's unbeaten start to the season went up in smoke as Blackpool came from behind to win at Bloomfield Road.
Andy Carroll celebrated the birth of his baby girl on Tuesday by nodding the Magpies in front on 40 minutes after Danny Guthrie had landed an inch-perfect cross on his forehead.
But the hosts levelled affairs in first-half injury time. Charlie Adam's inital effort, a stinging strike from just outside the area, was fisted clear by Steve Harper but he hadn't banked on the arrival of Brett Ormerod, steaming into the penalty box, who bundled home the rebound from 12 yards.
It was a similar story for the hosts' second on 64 minutes. This time Harper somehow kept out Jason Euell's point-blank shot only for the Tangerines skipper to blast into the roof of the net at the second attempt.
United threw bodies forward in the closing stages and came within inches of levelling when Nile Ranger's goal-bound header was hooked from the line by Stephen Crainey.
SECOND-HALF UPDATES (click refresh for latest)
Full-time, 2-1 Blackpool.
90+2min - Stephen Crainey somehow recovers to clip Nile Ranger's header from the goal-line after the Londoner had climbed to steer a looping cross on goal from just three yards out - that was so close!
There will be four minutes for the Magpies to find a response.
89min - Coloccini is well-positioned to block Thomas' goal-bound shot from 12 yards with the hosts pressing for a third.
84min - Blackpool double changes sees Charlie Adam and Hameur Bouazza replaced by Al Bangura and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas.
83min - Joey Barton makes way for Nile Ranger - one last throw of the dice?
82min - Charlie Adam has been far and away the hosts' best player tonight and he takes aim from 25 yards only to see his effort draw narrowly wide of Harper's target.
77min - Can United find a leveller? At the moment the hosts look fairly comfortable, let's hope that changes.
74min - Another home corner, this time on the left. Carroll is back helping out to head clear Bouazza's out-swinger.
72min - And Geremi comes within a whisker of drawing the sides level as his 12-yard strike, from Kevin Nolan's layoff, curls the wrong side of the visitng frame - that was close.
65min - United respond with a double change; Geremi and Peter Lovenkrands on for Danny Guthrie and Ryan Taylor.
64min - BLACKPOOL GOAL (2-1): Steven Taylor is stretching to stamp out Southern's low centre with the ball rolling away for a corner. Bouazza delivers and, when the ball drops amid a melee of bodies, JASON EUELL blasts into the roof of the net at the second attempt having seen his first effort excellently saved by Harper on the goal-line.
56min - Space opens up for Joey Barton to attack and the midfielder duly obliges with a powerful run into the penalty area. He works a yard to get his shot away but Evatt steps up to block and deflect behind for a corner. Ryan Taylor loops deep, too deep, and the chance is gone.
53min - Bouazza forces his way into the penalty area with Danny Simpson in pursuit on his tail. The Algerian holds off the defender's attention before releasing a left-footed shot which is palmed around the upright by Harper. Referee Moss spots an infrigement from the corner and United have a free-kick.
50min - United win a corner on the right but Taylor's delivery is grasped by the gloves of Rachubka.
49min - Joey Barton escapes with a warning as he catches Adam on halfway - the home fans want to see yellow when in truth it was barely a free-kick.
Both sides remain the same for the start of the second-half.
45+1min - BLACKPOOL GOAL (1-1): This time, though, the United stopper is beaten. Charlie Adam's inital effort, a stinging strike from just outside the area, is fisted clear by Harper but he hasn't banked on BRETT ORMEROD, steaming into the penalty, who bundles home the rebound from 12 yards.
45min - David Vaughan has a dig from 25 yards but the effort is speculative at best and Harper catches with comfort.
40min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (0-1): Danny Simpson rolls a short pass to the over-lapping Danny Guthrie on the right, he advances before standing up an inch-perfect cross for ANDY CARROLL to nod home from two yards out. The Geordie striker celebrates with his team-mates in front of the 1,700 Geordies and is bizarrely booked for doing so!
36min - Referee Moss somehow fails to spot a blatant handball amid a crowd of Tangerine bodies inside the goalmouth after Fabricio Coloccini had blasted on target from point-blank range from Ryan Taylor's corner. The United players surround the official but he waves away their protests. The Magpies have another corner and this time Nicky Butt flashes a header over from just six yards out - he knows he should have done better.
35min - This is wave after wave of Blackpool attacks - this time Southern tests Harper with a low, left-foot swinger from distance, the Toon keeper diving low to his bottom corner to save.
34min - Bouazza knocks Steve Harper off his feet with a hammer of a strike from the edge of the area. The Toon stopper beats the effort away before Steven Taylor completes the clearance.
29min - Vaughan scurries forward from deep before seeing his left-footed strike cannon away for a corner off Steve Taylor. Bouazza's cross looks poor but, when Nicky Butt can only half clear, Keith Southern blasts back into a crowded goalmouth only for Danny Simpson to divert the ball up and over the crossbar. Harper's plucks Bouazza's second delivery to the safety of his sky-blue-shirted chest.
27min - Bouazza races onto Adam's slick throughball before unleashing a first-time shot from 14 yards, the effort is low and on target but is straight at Steve Harper and the Toon keeper stoops to gather.
23min - You have to say Blackpool have shaded this opening quarter - United are struggling to find their rythmn.
20min - Bouazza leaves Danny Simpson for dead on the left before pulling a sharp ball back for Ormerod. Nicky Butt arrives just in time to steal from the toe of the Blackpool forward and, when the ball runs to David Vaughan, unmarked on the edge of six-yard area, the former Crewe youngster snatches at his shot allowing a relieved Steve Harper to save with ease - that was a let-off for the Magpies.
17min - Tangerines danger man Charlie Adam has home fans out of their seats as his rising drive from range glides just inches above the United crossbar - the former Rangers midfielder has had an eye-catching start.
14min - United are on the back foot little and skipper Euell draws a low shot from 20 yards well wide of Harper's goal.
11min - Steve Harper keeps his 500-minute unbeaten record intact as he beats clear Brett Ormerod's snap shot from 12 yards. The ball runs back to the feet of the former Southampton forward and, when he stabs a low pass to Hameur Bouazza, who rolls into the unguarded net, a lineman's flag correctly chalks the effort off with the Algerian clearly offside inside the six-yard area.
10min - Both sides still feeling each other out and there has been little by way of penalty-box action.
7min - The home crowd have thus far refused to let up in their repeated chant of "Holloway's Barmy Army" ...
4min - Steve Harper deals comfortably with Crainey's deep, raking centre from the left - a clean sheet here would equal a club record of six matches in a row.
The Magpies get the game started through Danny Guthrie and Kevin Nolan.
United are wearing their black-and-blue striped third kit for the first time this season.
The teams emerge to a sea of tangerine cards being held aloft by the home crowd inside a noise-filled Bloomfield Road.
TWO changes for United see Nicky Butt come in for the suspended Alan Smith, the veteran midfielder also reclaiming the armband, and Andy Carroll replaces Nile Ranger in the lone attacking role.
Smith was sent off in the dying seconds of Sunday's 1-0 win at Cardiff and will serve his one-match ban tonight.
Ranger, meanwhile, drops down to the bench at the expense of Carroll who has recovered from a groin problem.
The Magpies were knocked off top spot following last night's round of games, although a point here would take Chris Hughton's men back to the summit of the table.
