NEWCASTLE UNITED 4
HUDDERSFIELD TOWN 3
Carling Cup Second Round
Wednesday, August 26, 2009
Craig Hope reports from St.James' Park ...
KEVIN Nolan netted the winning goal as Newcastle United edged past a plucky Huddersfield Town in an enthralling seven-goal thriller at St.James' Park.
The hosts took the lead through Danny Guthrie (35) when the midfielder took full advantage of Anthony Pilkington's loose pass before guiding a low shot into the bottom corner from 20 yards.
That goal was the first of five in just 13 minutes and within 90 seconds the visitors had restored parity when Theo Robinson raced into the area to poke through the legs of Tim Krul.
That pair were the centre of attention two minutes later when the Terriers striker crashed to the turf under the challenge of the Dutch stopper inside the area with referee Tony Bates pointing to the spot - the frontman picking himself up to fire home his second of the night.
Two minutes after half-time and Jordan Rhodes, rounding Krul, slid into the unguarded net from the narrowest of angles to extend the lead.
But the hosts were soon right back in it and within 60 seconds Geremi had halved the deficit with a low finish from 12 yards.
Shola Ameobi was a half-time introduction and the Geordie hitman got the Magpies back on level terms with a 65th-minute penalty.
And the winner came seven minutes from time, Nolan stabbing over the line from point-blank range after Ameobi had turned Ryan Taylor's free-kick back across goal.

That's it, full-time, 4-3 United!
90+3min - The Terriers have a corner with keeper Alex Smithies charging upfield. The delivery is high and is turned back into the mix by Pilkington but it's Krul who climbs to pluck the ball to safety.
90+2min - Jonas Gutierrez is on his back and looks unable to continue - it looks like a hamstring problem. United are down to ten men and clinging on to a one-goal advantage.
90+1min - Haris Vuckic comes on for his debut as replacement for Shola Ameobi in the first of four added minutes.
90min - Only the quick-thinking of Butler denies Ranger a home-debut goal as he snuffs out Jose Enrique's low slide into the six-yard area - the Toon youngster poised to poke home.
88min - Robbie Simpson replaces Jordan Rhodes in one last throw of the dice for Lee Clark.
83min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (4-3): And from Danny Guthrie's free-kick Shola Ameobi steers a header back across goal for KEVIN NOLAN to turn home from point-blank range - at last the Magpies have their noses back in front!
83min - James Berrett is next in the book for a trip on Gutierrez.
80min - Enrique smashes a low ball to the near post, Ranger and Clarke slide to get there and, with the pair both getting something on the cross, the ball somehow cannons up and over the crossbar with the target gaping!
76min - Joe Skarz sees yellow for blatant tug on Gutierrez midway inside the Town half. Taylor's free-kick, clipped into the danger zone, is turned away for a corner by the head of Clarke. Taylor sweeps a glided flag-kick to the far post where a towering Shola Ameobi is unlucky not to grab his second as his header clips the top of the crossbar with Smithies scrambling to get there.
71min - Pilkington steps inside Ryan Taylor on the edge of the area but lashes high and wide when, with a little more composure, he could, and should, have tested Tim Krul.
67min - And the Argentine winger soon makes a surging forray into Terriers territory before seeing a 12-yard strike palmed around the upright by Smithies falling low to his near post. Guthrie's flag-kick is over-cooked and runs away for a goal-kick.
65min - Jonas Gutierrez is on for Kazenga LuaLua.
64min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (3-3): All square! SHOLA AMEOBI disptaches from the penalty spot for his fifth of the season after the striker was tripped in the area by Andy Butler as he galloped onto Danny Guthrie's forward slide - the Terriers defender entering the book. Credit to Shola, he showed great endeavour to get on the end of the throughball.
60min - Drinkwater sevres up a teasing corner which Kay, despite leaning back and appearing off balance, manages to steer inches wide of the upright with a powerful header from eight yards - good effort.
59min - Ryan Taylor clips a free-kick into a crowd of bodies on the penalty spot, Kevin Nolan's is the forehead which rises above the sea of shirts to guide on goal but his looping effort is plucked to safety by Smithies.
57min - Lee Peltier clashes heads with Geremi and the Terriers full-back has played his last part. The defender is stretchered from the field and is replaced by James Berrett.
53min - Blink and you'll miss something here! This time it's the visitors on the attack and Tamas Kadar has to be on his toes to contain the danger as Ryan Taylor squanders possession on the right, thankfully the Hungarian reads the situation and sweeps up with two-goal Theo Robinson closing in on the loose ball.
A confirmed attendance of 23, 815.
48min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (2-3): What a game we have on our hands! Nile Ranger tees up GEREMI and the midfielder, with only Smithies to beat, controls before guiding low and left-footed into the bottom corner from 12 yards.
47min - HUDDERSFIELD GOAL (1-3): JORDAN RHODES races onto Peltier's long punt into the box and, in one swift movement, nicks the ball around a stranded Tim Krul before sweeping a low shot into the unguarded net from the narrowest of angles - great finish.
Shola Ameobi is on for Nicky Butt during the break with Kevin Nolan taking the armband.
The whistle sounds to bring to a close a frenetic opening period as, three goals inside just four minutes, sees The Terriers reverse a one-goal deficit to go in ahead at the break.
There will be two minutes added time.
39min - HUDDERSFIELD GOAL (1-2): What a turnaround! THEO ROBINSON nicks the ball by Krul before throwing his body over the Dutchman's floored frame in what looks like a blatant dive - but referee Bates buys the penalty claim and points to the spot before flashing a yellow card in the direction of an unlucky United keeper. The Terriers striker picks himself and lashes low into the bottom corner for his, and Huddersfield's, second - 2-1.
37min - HUDDERSFIELD GOAL (1-1): The advantage last less than two minutes as THEO ROBINSON races through on goal before poking past the on-rushing Krul.
35min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-0): Pilikington gifts possession to DANNY GUTHRIE 20 yards from goal and the United midfielder takes full advantage as he crafts space for the shot before dispatching a low, left-footed strike into the bottom corner to give the hosts the lead.
33min - Kevin Nolan has the ball in the net with a measured lob from an acute angle having latched onto Nile Ranger's headed flick, but as he spins to acknowledge the assist, the elated Liverpudlian is brought crashing back to earth as he notices the linesman's flag signalling offside.
27min - Kadar gets between the intended target of Rhodes and Drinkwater's attempted cross to block at the cost of a flag-kick. Drinkwater takes but his bizarre attempt at a cross ends up skidding to the feet of LuaLua on the edge of the area and he clears.
23min - And from the resulting corner it's that man Geremi who again steals in to connect inside the six-yard box only for this time to flash his header above the bar when really he should've scored.
22min - The hosts have a corner as Jose Enrique's teasing near-post centre skids up off the turf and behind off the thigh of Clarke. Guthrie lands a far-post ball on the head of Geremi and the Cameroon star is only denied an opener by the alert fingertips of Smithies who brushes over the bar.
21min - United have Danny Simpson, on loan from Man Utd, lining up alongside Tamas Kadar at the heart of the rearguard and so far the young pairing have looked comfortable.
16min - An incisive forward move from United ends in Jose Enrique, having dashed onto Kevin Nolan's threaded throughball, zipping a skidding low cross into the six-yard area which Danny Guthrie, sliding and at full-stretch, can only stud wide of goal - that was close!
12min - LuaLua sees a 20-yard shot spiral high into the Leazes End and, perhaps taking note of the waywardness of that strike, referee Tony Bates calls for a change of match-ball.
9min - Tim Krul's first involvement of note sees the Dutchman skip from his line in a flash to pounce upon Drinkwater's dangerous low centre across the face of goal - good take by the Toon stopper.
3min - Ranger shows an early glimpse of his promise and wriggles free of Clarke but is unlucky when his sharp pass to the feet of the supporting Guthrie is miscontrolled by the midfielder on the penalty spot and The Terriers clear.
1min - LuaLua wastes no time is stamping his mark on the game and burns by Peltier on the left flank, the winger snakes into the box and drags a ball back in the direction of Ranger, skipper Peter Clarke is well positioned and reads the ball to block at the expense of a corner. Guthrie and LuaLua work it short but a mis-understanding sees Peltier seize possession before clearing.
After what was non-stop rain until well after the lunchtime, there are bright blue skies above St.James' Park as the Magpies get the action started attacking the Leazes End.
CHRIS Hughton hands full debuts to no fewer than three Newcastle United youngsters for tonight's visit of Huddersfield Town.

Ranger will be supported in attack by Kevin Nolan.
