England Under 21's Head Coach Gareth Southgate will be hosting Newcastle United Foundation's next Coach the Coach Clinic.
The event, run in partnership with Northumberland FA, will be held on Friday 31st January from 6.30 to 9.30 at Complete Football, Gosforth. As well as being an FA accredited CPD event for coaches at Levels 3 and 4, the Foundation is encouraging coaches at all levels to take this unique opportunity to see such a high profile coach in the North East.
Gareth was appointed Head Coach of England Under-21s in August 2013, just in time for the start of the Euro Championship qualifying campaign the following month. A former player with Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough, Gareth was a classy defender who won 57 caps for England in his career before following a coaching career. After finishing his career as a player with 'Boro', he was given the opportunity to manage at the north-east club and spent three years in charge at the Riverside Stadium, whilst studying towards his coaching badges. He left Middlesbrough in 2009 and took the chance to have some time away from the game by travelling around Europe and observing the work of numerous top coaches and clubs.
His first spell with The FA came in 2011 when he took on the role of Head Of Youth Development, which saw him working with the England development teams and playing a key part in developing a new philosophy for English teams. He left that role in 2012, but upon being appointed to the U21's, Southgate said "I'm delighted to get this role and extremely excited about the prospect of working with the best and brightest young players in the country … There's some exciting talent here, there's a certain style of football that I'd like to play and there are players in there that I think are capable of doing it".
Gareth's philosophy on style of play forms the basis of his clinic and will showcase how he has implemented his ideas, both theoretically and practically, since starting the role.
