Metro Radio's news journalist Micky Welch has boldly taken on a challenge of dizzying proportions by agreeing to abseil from the roof of St. James' Park for the Magpie's official charity.
Hoping to raise awareness and funds for Newcastle United Foundation, the journalist will test his nerves to the limit on Saturday 12th April 2014. Luckily he has the support of Saturday Breakfast hosts Stu and Kelly who will eagerly join the challenge after their radio show finishes at midday. Live commentary will capture their reactions and screams throughout the 150ft descent from the roof of St. James' Park.
Aware of the challenge he had set his team, Micky said:
"As a life-long fan this opportunity was just too good to miss…realising though, that I'm going to be 150ft in the air, dangling over the edge of the greatest stadium in the world, swaying in the breeze, held by a wire, is a tiny bit daunting! But, it's for a fantastic cause and something I'm proud to be involved with - if you haven't already signed up, get on it!"
You may be mistaken for thinking Metro Radio has lost the plot by sending three of its precious presenters to scale the heady heights of St. James' Park, but it's all for a good cause. The event will raise funds for Newcastle United Foundation which uses the passion for football and Newcastle United to make a difference to the lives of over 50,000 children, young people and families throughout the North East. The Metro Radio team will join a 90 strong team to raise over £10,000 to help continue the Foundation's work across the North East, using football to engage, educate and improve lives. There are a few remaining places left for those brave enough to take the challenge on.
Sarah Medcalf, Newcastle United Foundation Fundraising Manager, said:
"A huge thank you to Metro Radio and our brave abseil team for signing up for this challenge. It will be a fantastic experience for everyone taking part and all money raised will help support local community projects across the region."
