220 families from Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside and Northumberland attended Newcastle United Foundation's fourth annual Family Football celebration event last Friday evening at St James' Park.
Over the past 12 months, the Foundation has delivered 30 Family Football Courses in local schools and community venues. A total of 551 people completed a course and a further 601 people took part in family learning workshops.
Newcastle upon Tyne Central MP Chi Onwuhra and Councillor Rob Higgins (Benwell and Scotswood) were in attendance to hand out awards to each school and to each of the following special award winners:
Young Learner of the Year - Naomi Nicholson from From Bedlington Station
Adult Learner of the Year - Hayley Burrows, Bridgewater Primary School
Special Achievement Award - Lorraine Bryson, Wallsend Jubilee Primary
Family Learners of the Year - Atrill family, Whitehouse Primary School
Project Manager, Andy Foster said:
"Our Family Learning Celebration is a flagship event on the Foundation calendar. It is fantastic to celebrate the achievements of every family who has taken part. Our thanks this year go to Newcastle City Learning, Gateshead Council and North Tyneside Council, the Big Lottery Fund and Premier League Charitable Fund plus every school, teacher and family who have participated this year."
Family Football uses the power of football to bring families together to enjoy learning. The project was funded by the Big Lottery Fund from 2009 to early 2013. The Premier League Charitable Fund has recently awarded the Foundation £120,000 which means the project can continue for a further two years.
