Question Tyne

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Club Reporter

Newcastle United were crowned the sporting brains of Tyneside on Wednesday night, as a trio of the Club's footballers won a charity quiz.

Question Tyne was held in the Bamburgh Suite at the Sports Direct Arena, and featured goalkeeper Steve Harper, defender Steven Taylor and midfielder Dan Gosling going up against counterparts from Durham Cricket Club and Newcastle Falcons Rugby Club.

Representing Durham were England international duo Liam Plunkett and Ben Stokes, along with Barbados-born fast bowler Ruel Brathwaite, and lining up for the Falcons were James Hudson, Jeremy Manning and Jimmy Gopperth.

Nearly 400 people were in attendance to help the raise funds for Newcastle United Foundation, Newcastle Falcons Community Foundation and Durham County Cricket Club Foundation - who all use the local love of sport to make a real difference to young peoples' lives across the North-East.

And it was the Magpies who eventually triumphed after six gruelling rounds to claim the trophy.

From picture boards to guess the year, mystery guest to home or away, and what happened next to charades, all of the professional sportsmen were pushed to the limits before United's eight-point haul was enough to take top spot.

And it was an evening enjoyed by all who attended, as well as those who took part.

"I've done quite a few things for our Foundation and they are always well received," explained Harper to nufcTV.

"We know that money is put back into the local community, which is very important, and it is great that Durham Cricket Club and the Falcons are doing the same.

"I get to the Falcons quite a bit because my son plays a lot of rugby, and I know a lot of the lads at Durham as well, so when I was invited along to take part I jumped at the chance.

"I think I should have worn a big drum on my back tonight and had a mouth organ too though, because I was a one man band!

"We gave it our best and the important thing was to raise money for three important Foundations."
