United moved to snap up the promising Chelsea youngster on a one-month loan deal on January 29 and he made his debut at Leicester City the following day.
The Dutch left-back spent the first half of the 2009/10 season at Coventry City and was part of The Sky Blues side which was beaten 2-0 by United in December.
Van Aanholt impressed on that night at the Ricoh Arena and, with 21 appearances, was a regular for Chris Coleman's men.
The 's-Hertogenbosch-born star, who signed for Chelsea from PSV Eindhoven in 2008, joins Holland Under-21 team-mate Tim Krul at St.James' Park.
