Loan Watch: Thauvin On Target

Written by Newcastle Utd

A round-up of United's loanees who were in action for their respective clubs over the weekend

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor

Florian Thauvin scored the first goal of his latest Marseille loan spell on Sunday but was unable to prevent them slipping to a 2-1 defeat at Guingamp.

The winger began the Ligue 1 fixture on the substitutes' bench but was introduced in the 57th minute with L'OM trailing 1-0, following Yanis Salibur's first-minute strike.

Within 60 seconds of his arrival, Guingamp doubled their lead through Jeremy Sorbon, but Thauvin gave Marseille hope in the 78th minute, firing home an impressive 20-yard left-footed drive.

However, the 23-year-old was unable to inspire his side to complete what would have been an excellent comeback.

Back on home soil, Ivan Toney and Shrewsbury Town picked up their maiden League One victory of the 2016/17 season on Saturday.

The Shrews were 2-1 winners at home to Chesterfield, who took the lead through Jay O'Shea in the 14th minute.

Toney had a good, early chance for the hosts but sent his shot wide. However, they didn't have to wait too long for an equaliser, with full-back Junior Brown heading in from a corner. And the turnaround was completed six minutes from time when Adam El-Abd nodded home another flag-kick.

Toney played 82 minutes of the match, and was booked, before being replaced by Stoke loanee George Waring.

In League Two, Macaulay Gillesphey played the full 90 minutes for Carlisle United as they recorded a 2-2 draw at Cambridge United.

The Cumbrians twice came from behind at the Abbey Stadium, with Gillesphey playing a key role in their first equaliser of the afternoon - the centre-back delivering a free-kick for Jason Kennedy to head in.

Meanwhile, Liam Smith was not involved for Crewe Alexandra in their 1-1 draw at Newport County, as the midfielder remains sidelined by injury.
