Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Shay Given has announced his retirement from international football.

The 40-year-old, now with Stoke City, won 134 caps over 20 years and was part of the Republic of Ireland's Euro 2016 squad.

He won 82 of those caps during his near 12-year spell at St. James' Park and remains the Magpies' most-capped player of all time.

Given - who left United for Manchester City in 2009 after 462 starts and one substitute appearance - had previously retired from international duty four years ago.

In a statement released on social media on Thursday, Given thanked his close family, friends and the Ireland supporters and confirmed that he would now be focusing on his club career.
