Ashington-born 20-year-old Macaulay Gillesphey has rejoined Carlisle United on loan until January

Young defender Macaulay Gillesphey has rejoined Carlisle United on loan.

The Ashington-born 20-year-old spent last season at Brunton Park, making 27 appearances and scoring twice in all competitions as the Cumbrians narrowly missed out on the League Two play-offs.

His debut came in a Capital One Cup tie against Liverpool at Anfield and he played at left-back and centre-back for Keith Curle's side over the course of the season.

He signed a new contract at St. James' Park earlier this month and, having featured for Peter Beardsley's second-string in pre-season, has now headed back to Cumbria until January where he will look to gain more league experience.

Speaking to nufc.co.uk after penning his new deal, he explained: "When you go to League Two, it's all about winning. It doesn't matter how, you've just got to win. It doesn't help when it comes to winter and the pitches start to turn to mud instead of grass, but it was a good learning curve."

Magpies' midfielder Liam Smith joined Crewe Alexandra on a six-month loan earlier this month.
