Semi-Final Disappointment For Woodman

Written by Newcastle Utd

Freddie Woodman played for England as they were knocked out of the European Under-19 Championships on Wednesday

England have exited the European Under-19 Championships following a semi-final defeat to Italy.

Newcastle goalkeeper Freddie Woodman started between the posts for Aidy Boothroyd's Young Lions, but was beaten by Federico Dimarco's 27th-minute penalty and then left with no chance as Dimarco added a second on the hour mark.

A late own goal from Alberto Picchi gave England hope, but they couldn't force an equaliser.

England had qualified from their group with a 100 per cent record, beating France, Holland and Croatia with Woodman playing in all of their games. However his Club colleague Adam Armstrong missed out on the squad having failed to fully recover from a thigh injury in time.

The Young Lions' performances in the competition were enough to see them qualify for next year's Under-20 World Cup in South Korea.
