O'Brien Backing Magpies For Promotion

Written by Newcastle Utd

Former Newcastle hero Liam O'Brien is backing his former Club to enjoy a successful 2016/17 campaign

Former Newcastle favourite Liam O'Brien is backing the Magpies to bounce back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

The ex-Republic of Ireland international was a big part of Kevin Keegan's promotion-winning team of 1992/93 and is best-known on Tyneside for his superb free-kick in a 2-1 win over Sunderland in 1992.

Now the assistant manager of Bray Wanderers, he came along to watch the current United side being put through their paces at their County Kildare training camp last week.

And he told nufcTV that he's convinced Rafa Benitez's side have what it takes to enjoy a successful 2016/17 campaign.

"I'm very confident," he said. "I was actually at the last game of the season against Spurs in the Premier League; that was a great result.

"It'd be great to see them doing well. If they start well and win their home games, they've got the right man in charge so hopefully he can get them back up into the Premier League.

"There's some really good players here. It's a strong squad and I'm looking forward to seeing them hopefully get back up."

He added: "I loved my time there. The people were fantastic, very passionate about the game, and two of my kids were born there so they're still Newcastle fans.

"That goal against Sunderland was 24 years ago and when I go back - and I've been back a few times - it's always mentioned.

"It's great that the fans still remember it - the older ones anyway!

"They were great times for me there; we had some very good successful years - some poor ones, but some successful years and I really enjoyed my time there."
