England Under-19 goalkeeper Freddie Woodman helped his side to a 2-1 victory over France in their opening match at the the European Under-19 Championships on Tuesday.

Aidy Boothroyd's youngsters raced into a 2-0 lead inside the opening ten minutes at the Albstadion in Heidenheim, Germany, thanks to an own goal from Jerome Onguene and a Dominic Solanke strike.

However, after Magpies custodian Woodman had parried a Jean-Kevin Augustin effort, the French frontman reduced the deficit, flicking home just after the half hour mark.

The 19-year-old then saved once more from Augustin after the break, also keeping out Lucas Tousert and Clement Michelin as the Young Lions held out for the win.

Woodman and England will now face the Netherlands, who beat the other team in Group B, Croatia, in their opener, on Friday.
